THR lotusbuds' recovery thread

Lots of recovery niggles along the way...but you are doing just great.
Lots of healing still happening so keep in keeping on.

Hope you have a peaceful night!

@LaylaThanks for asking. I seem to have been out every day for some reason or other. I think I over did it as when that groin area hurts where the incision is I know it. Its funny as in one day I will go from using the 4 wheeled walker, to 2 canes ( in the morning) to one cane to absolutely nothing for a couple minutes. Its true. The crazy thing is on Friday last week I was carrying (on the seat of the walker as its so handy) a big bag of laundry and put a few things in it. Forgot to take my cell phone out until 10 minutes after the wash began. I drained the water but it had drowned and died. It was old but I wasn't ready to upgrade. Long story short I had to go to Verizon to get a new one. The chairs were either too high or too low so I stood for over an hour then I had to go back 2 more days due to mistakes they made on the bill. So that was that was the overdoing it from standing too long. Feel a lot better and icing has helped. I also took a tramadol a couple days ago an it worked wonders. I was taking it 3 weeks before surgery but tried it once since surgery and didn't like the feeling of being groggy. This time I only felt a bit tired upon waking. I may take another if I get a lot of pain again. So far Tylenol has been working.
I'm in a good space these days as its sunny and warm here for a change.
Have a good evening everyone!

Happy Thursday! @lotusbuds
Its nice to read you're doing well and learning your limitations.
It sounds like you're staying busy, getting out when you're able, but balancing activity with rest which is wise. Enjoy the sunny warm weather. I'm still waiting for that here :bored:
Healing hugs coming your way :friends:

I do feel frustrated. My thigh is still swollen and numb but less so..I added a tramadol in the evening to ease the pain. I wonder if sitting too long is the culprit. I had a lovely lunch with a friend and brought a pillow but could manage so much better than weeks ago on the chair. Stood up and stretched every 45 minutes. We were there 2 1/2 hours. Then I should have gone home but stopped at a grocery store. Came home so so fatigued went to ice and elevate and slept an hour. Feel good now. Not working on Saturday as I had thought (happy about that.) Long story but manager didn't accept me coming in 4 hours even with note from OS. I am 'only' per diem, on call so he can choose this I guess. Was nice but said I had to only come back when I could do a full shift. If you have a position there its a different story. I was so ticked off at first but then relieved. I'm not ready. The next shift is May 11, then a couple end of May and then I retire so leaving it one day at a time. I go back on Tuesday for a retirement party of the friend I had lunch with (I have been there 17 years, she has 18 years) and will see everyone then...interesting. I may not go back at all but hope to retire gracefully and do at least 2 shifts.
Sweet dreams everyone!

I'm sorry you are dealing with this issue at work, @lotusbuds I am always somewhat amazed at the treatment long term employees sometimes receive when they need accommodation for this type of issue. It seems to me they would be happy to have all hands on deck when possible.

I hope your thigh resolves. I'm still having some pins and needles in my thigh, making it difficult to get comfortable st times. Have stopped even Tylenol as I just feel off taking anything. Hope you had a restful night and a lovely day. supposed to be sunny and warm, mid 80's today.

@SarahBee Sunny and mid 80’s sounds wonderful. It is rainy and mid 40’s here in the NE today. @lotusbuds It sounds like you are making good progress in your recovery. Maybe you were on the brink of the ODIC the other day but I don’t think you will have any long lasting effects from your day out. I’m sure it seemed wonderful to get out for lunch and a nice long chat with a friend. Just keep remembering to ice and elevate to keep the pain and swelling down. It will keep getting better and better as the days go on.

Just catching up on your thread. Your life sounds so active. I’m sorry to hear you still have swelling and pain. My OS has told me to be aware some improvements take months to realize. Swelling was one I specially addressed. He said could even be six months or more. My left leg is a good inch bigger than right, even after sleeping. Annoying with clothes and shoes. Hope your retirement goes well. Sending healing vibes. ❤️

I agree @Fit4Family about the clothes. I've been wearing soft leggings the whole time and still have a light swelling and the incision is always sore to the touch. I had a boss similar to yours @lotusbuds, it was full time or nothing plus he wouldn't allow me to come back with the cane! There is nothing wrong with a graceful retirement without going back to work first. People who really matter in your life will understand!

@SarahBee re work...I went from being relieved to hurt to ticked off. This is the same manager that 3 years ago had just started after I tripped on computer wires getting up from a desk that were loose and hanging and tore my meniscus. I was off 3 weeks then came back on partial days for a month. I had an L & I claim and it was up to HR. He was super nice and supportive then. I am not per diem which means on call and he seems to only want me back when I can do a full day. Well I am happy I didn't work today to be honest. My next one is next Saturday and I will go in and if I can't work the whole day I will go home. I am not deciding ahead of time as how do I know if I can do a whole day. I then have 2 days one being a holiday so time and a half. If I feel after next Saturday I'm done then I will not go back. I feel retired as I have only been working 3-4 days a month the last year before surgery. I've been off now since February 3rd. Its a very stressful job but a lot of sitting and some walking. I am going in on Tuesday as its my close friend's retirement party. She's been there 18 years and I have 17. I am so ready for retirement and so we will see if I make all these 3 shifts or not.
I am sorry you are having pins and needles in your thigh. I can relate. My swelling affects me off an on all day and then numbness only when I touch it. I feel its getting better but its there so much I don't really know. I think time, ice, rest and time will take care of it..or so 'they' say. Great you are off all meds.
I am able to walk with out the cane a lot and am trying it out in the house a bit at a time.
How are you doing today?
@GrannyC thanks...I am icing and taking it so slow today.
@Fit4Family good to hear the swelling should go down. How are you doing?
@Fit4Family thank you! it's true. I am planning a party at HH with my friend who is retiring Tuesday for mid June for old colleagues and a few people from now at work. That will be my retirement sendoff.
Have a great weekend folks. Its going to be almost 80 here next week with sunny days in the 70 too. Unusual for here this time of year. Loving it. Sitting in the garden a lot.

I did it! I worked yesterday and stayed 8 hours. It was thankfully super quiet so although I was busy I had a really easy day. I was sitting a lot so got stiff but iced twice and got up a lot. By the time I went to leave my thigh was swelling (I can't see it but feel it) so knew I better get home. I was not fatigued like I am when I over do it as I didn't do much walking at all. Kind of a miracle. I now have only 2 more shifts and they spaced out by 2 weeks so I will be even that much better then. Work is having a Happy Hour gathering for me in a month so that is something to look forward to. I'm so happy to be retiring!
The one funny thing that happened is I grabbed the plastic bags and ice at work and it was great. After 10 minutes I noticed a huge puddle on the floor and the seat cushion was sopping wet...ha ha! you are supposed to double bag the ice. It looked like I had peed on the floor and cushion. One of the nurses got me a towel and I had quite the laugh.
I went for a swim on Friday which was good and my hip is feeling good.
My issue is for a week my other knee has been hurting when I walk. I feel it in bed and started icing daily. It has not improved. I have never had pain in my left hip or knee before so I think its reacting to when I started not using the cane as that is when it started. It has been overcompensating the last year for me before my surgery and hopefully will calm down. In the morning its worse and I can't believe this is happening. I mentioned it to PT and he too is hoping it will calm down. I'll monitor it. Its a lot better once I take my Tylenol. I did take a tramadol once a day for 3 days this week in the afternoon which helps a lot.
Thinking positively.

Awesome job getting through a day at work, despite peeing your pants!! :heehee:
Klassy has had some issues kick off with her knee as well, what a drag! I hear from my daughter in Vancouver, WA that your weather is spectacular today, hopefully you can get out to enjoy it!

Hi there! Well done for the 8 hour shift and do get up and just walk about a bit often! My stiffness is much better particularly when I went back to swimming. I am really overweight and have problems with my right knee (early osteoarthritis signs) but it is settling down well and I am convinced if I lose weight I can hold off an operation there. Fingers crossed!

My hip can still surprise me and muscles ache if I do too much but paracetamol and ice sort it out.... compared to this time last year it does seem like a miracle.....I don’t take any of it for granted and feel I have been given a second chance...

Re your knee, my physio gave me some gentle exercises done whilst sitting at my desk and they helped enormously. Also stretching out the calf muscle from a seated position prior to getting up and walking helps..

It seems like the muscles do adjust to the new-and-correct normal after a while but do moan after years of misalignment.... best of luck and happy ‍♀️ ‍♂️ ‍♀️

@Carriemay60 Do you mean Vancouver BC? Does your daughter live there? thats my home town not Vancouver WA. I'll read all of Klassy's posts soon.
@SurreyGirl thanks! curious about the exercises to do while sitting. I'll ask my physio tomorrow.
Thanks again!

@lotusbuds No, our daughter is in Vancouver, WA. She met a guy shortly after Uni and married him. That was in Spokane but they have been in Vancouver a few years now.

Yay...good for you! :yay:
You made it through a shift with only two left until retirement. :yes!:
How exiting. :happydance:
Sorry to hear about your knee, hopefully if is from favoring and settles soon.
I hope you have a wonderful week!
@lotusbuds

:hi: and wonderful to hear you made it through a full day!
Make sure you baby yourself after the long day! That energy drain is Real!

Continued best wishes @lotusbuds !:roseshwr:

@Mojo333 thanks! I was surprised I made it for the full day! I didn't have any fatigue or energy drain when I got home which was the first time in ages. Maybe as I got a lot of sleep the day before. My hip is feeling very good this week but I still have knee pain in my good leg which has never ever bothered me and it is affecting my gait and mood. It feel a bit better the last 2 days but is not good. Just monitoring it and hoping it will resolve soon.
