THR lotusbuds' recovery thread

@Mojo333 that is awesome! you and I will share this hipversary together. 2 years that is fantastic!
I know its still early days. I had no idea it would take this long. Clueless is best I guess.
Today was sunny and I got in the car to see how it feels to get in the driver's side and called my husband to get in with me. He was very nervous. I drove us about a mile away on a quiet road to an area I could slam on the brakes suddenly and did that fine. I feel like a bird that is about to take flight and have mixed feelings but basically hope to go tomorrow to do one thing only and that is get in the pool and see how that feels even if I am only in there 5 minutes. I love water so hoping some more flexibility will come and strength eventually if I keep going.
I have to say my numbness and swelling although a bit better was really evident in the car. I think the movement is new and I can do it but was a bit sore afterwards. I will see how I feel in the morning as so far so good.
Its definitely slow but steady isn't it? I am not comparing myself anymore to others than can do so much more.
@Carriemay60 I usually don't do the vacuuming but feel to do it as my husband has done so much around here. Should have stopped once I felt tired. It was a work out. Glad the back pain is gone though.
Congratulations on your new grand baby is I haven't said it already! wonderful for you.
@Hoppy Nanny thank you! good luck on May 3rd. Hope you can go in the pool after that.
@SE Florida its a hard one isn't it. To have the energy but to know when to stop so as not to over do it.
Sigh...

I hope today might be a good pool day for you! It can be so relaxing :swim: !!!!

Really good idea to practice run driving. I hadn’t thought about a sudden brake. Hope you got to the pool!

thanks everyone! I was told to drive I must be able to stop suddenly as if an elk ran in the road. I said back oh I have always wanted to see an elk! but I got the idea. You have to be able to slam on those brakes hard.
Well I did it! I drove to the pool (6-20 minutes). Stayed in the pool 15 minutes. played around to see what worked or not then swam about 6 laps slowly crawl. Before surgery I did 25 minutes crawl so this was just a warm up. It felt so familiar and I just was in bliss being in there. Some movements hurt (deep end bicycling) so I stopped but one movements felt good. I was then concerned about the dressing room with my cane as its slippery but all went well. I was going to come right home but needed gas and then went to Trader Joe's and did a quick shop.
All in all a great success. The swelling in my thigh did feel strange and I didn't have ice for the trip home but I'm home icing now.
Will go back again on Monday morning as they are closed over the weekend.
It felt strange to be so independent again.

Yeah, good for you!!! Happy dance! :dancy: And you drove too!!! Wonderful!

I'm SO happy for you!! Such great progress. Too bad you had to add gas to the outing but it is what it is.

I took my walker in the change rooms and found the family change rooms better maintained. The wet floors terrified me!

Sounds like you had a great day of it, @lotusbuds Seems strange to say but I want to go shopping. Have never been a shopper but boy! Would I like to wander around Trader Joe's. Glad you enjoyed your new freedom!

What a great day!! TJ is a weekly stop for me and I miss it already!

After my TKR, the checkout guy at TJ gave me a bouquet of flowers as a welcome back [emoji5]

Wow thanks for the replies everyone! First @JennyLynne that is so sweet. I love Trader Joe's and have been going once a week the last couple weeks with my husband waiting in the car. I stopped just for oranges and of course got so much more. I had to rest this afternoon and had a nap, ice, elevate session. Feeling fine right now so lets hope for the best. The pool was heavenly. Not crowded (I chose when to go as I know when its busy) and I did just melt for awhile. Its a bit too deep in the shallow end to do my exercises and the little pool was full of 4 women walking and talking so I avoided that. I tried some things that hurt so stopped them but the laps were amazing. slow and not too hard but a good stretch. I will go back next week 2-3 times. Driving felt so cool. But I won't do much driving yet. Not ready for big adventures in traffic. I hope you all get to drive and shop again soon depending where you are on your journey. I got an email from a friend in Detroit area who told me after 4 weeks she was driving and other than one day she had on pain only swelling and numbness. She started telling me about her PT workouts on an exercise ball. She is 71. I had to roll my eyes as although she is telling the truth I felt she was bragging. It was a year ago. It was a good reminder to just accept where we are and go from there and not compare our progress with others...Words of wisdom ha ha.
Wishing everyone lots of hours of sleep tonight.

You sound splendid for two months out :happydance:and do be careful for overdoing it in the pool.
It never hurts until we stop.
I too love the pool and it was scary feeling in and out the first time.
It is wonderful rehab and I'm so glad you feel more confident!

oh there is always someone who does everything after 2 weeks... a friends mother told me she was on a scooter in Greece after 3 weeks post op... I said why???? Glad all going well... slow & steady wins this particular race x

@Mojo333 I did stop the movements that hurt as I could tell right away and the lap swimming I did slow and adapted it to an easy movement..breast stroke arms and light crawl kicks....very light. I am not going back today but last summer went 5 days a week. I am a long way from that and will try not to over do it in the pool. Its true 'it never hurts until we stop'. That happens for me with walking or going into a store. I am a bit sore today but not much.
@SurreyGirl I wear flip flops around the pool and in the shower that are really sturdy and I walk slowly and water shoes only when I do lake swimming. It is scary around pools as it can be slippery so I am super careful.
Taking it easy today.
Have a good weekend everyone.
8 weeks today I was heading into surgery...seems like a long time ago but really isn't is it...

You are doing fantastic! Driving, swimming, shopping, you're just all over the place. Glad you got to the pool, I know you've been really wanting to get back into it. I think I might do that after my surgery and get clearance as it is good rehab and causes less stress to the joints. I tend to swim like a rock so I usually just do light exercises or float around with a pool noodle. Hoping you have a great, restful weekend!

Hey
Wow...I can't believe you're coming up on two months post op already.
It sounds like you're jumping back into life. Driving, trips to the pool to exercise, shopping at TJ's.
It's coming....slowly but surely you're re-capturing life. And the best part....without that horrid OA pain!
Yahoo for you :yay: I hope you have a fab weekend!
Hugs :friends:
