THR Long, Long Wait - Rhonda K's Recovery

Hubby has suffered with a bit of vertigo from time to time. Usually his is allergy-related and an antihistamine helps. It also helps if he keeps something in his tummy. Doesn't make him so nauseous if he's not hungry. My dog sitter has it worse. She won't take her meds so I have to threaten not to leave Banjo with her if she refuses. That usually does the trick. Hope you find what works well for you. So proud of your recovery.

Seems like a lot of people deal, with this. I don't know how those that have it constantly cope. Mine has calmed down yesterday and today thank goodness. Only felt a touch of it today so my usual remedy of waiting it out seems to be working one more time. Fingers crossed. Got the cane going again a bit today. Just walking around family room and in back yard. Not much but going slow is the plan anyway. See my OS on Wednesday. Anxious to hear his assessment and I guess just hoping to get some reassurance that all is ok. Been trying to take some steps unassisted but still feel some pain that makes me limp. Will see what he says. Thanks for helpful tips and concern.

I know when it's gone @Rhonda K it's such a relief.....I find it very hard to deal with..spinning & nausea. Glad yours is moving on!
Hope all goes well on Wednesday....please stay on the cane/crutch until the pain & limp goes completely...it's worth the wait! Xxx

Feeling good and optimistic today. Saw my OS. He says exray looks fine and pain level and all my concerns and gripes were just normal. Wants me to maintain my restrictions to 12 weeks. Wasn't surprised by that since he believes in going slow when it comes to absolutely everything. I can deal with it. He says some people need three months or even six to get around without aids. Hoping I will be on the short end of that time frame, but taking things as they come for now. I don't need to get myself stressed out, I've done enough of that in the past!

Asked him why my legs have a light red rash. Seems I am allergic to the latex in the TED's. Knew I really, really hated those things! Lol.

My vertigo is easing up thank heavens!!!!! Only used the cane around the house today and out for a short walk this morning and to my Dr. appointment. That is the biggest news! A very good feeling of forward progress. Things seem to have been going so slow for me, that is a huge leap. Hardly any pain with the cane, just a touch of soreness and a little stiff, but not bad compared to just a couple days ago. I'm excited!

Good for you @Rhonda K So glad you feel you are making progress...we all knew you were!!!

Glad your OS is of the ' take it slow & steady ' variety! You will hardly remember you had those restrictions in a few months....time to ditch those TEDs by the sounds of it!

Lovely to hear your optimism! Chrissie xx

@Rhonda K Now that is one good reason to say you are allergic to latex if I e ver heard one! Too bad you didn't figure that out when you were struggling with them so much.

Your OS appointment sounds like it went great! I also agree that the slow & steady approach is going to bring better, long term results. Having an even, balanced gait is going to help that hip last all the longer and hopefully prevent problems elsewhere in your body. I kind of cringe when I see the speed some people move through their recovery. Keep up the great work!

@RhondaK, I'm still smiling and so proud of you! You're doing so well! Ahhhhh.....

Want to wish all our veterans here in the US a Happy Veterans Day! My hubby is a Viet Nam vet. So proud of him that all those years ago at the age of 19 he joined the service to defend us and our country. Hope all the vets out there feel the appreciation they deserve!

As for me, still moving along, a little slow, but making those small strides. Riding my stationary bike for 30 minutes, walking a mile with cane. When my muscles are stretched and not so tight I can walk a little without it. Can't stress how much rolling my thigh with the pipe and stretching helps with the tightness and pain. Sure wish it would stay but it doesn't last, just have to do it three or four times a day.

Still bothered from time to time with that pesky dizziness. Just real quick little episodes, but bothering me. So made an appointment with my family Dr. Of course couldn't get in for two weeks, by then it will most likely be gone. Hope so. Been too long.

Like so many others, those restrictions are getting so old. So many things I just want to do anyway. Have to fight myself. Still sleeping on my back, it's the worse! 9 weeks today, in a way went so fast, but at the same time it's been ages ago. Doesn't make sense..... Had to relinquish cooking Thanksgiving dinner this year to my daughter and son-in-law. That was hard! That's my job! Haha. Just this once I told them. But so glad they knew what's best and insisted. They are right.

Good morning everyone! Feeling a little excited today. Just got back from our walk and I did a mile today. Haven't been able to do that in over a year. With a cane of course but hardly leaning on it much at all. I can pick it up and walk a little distance, but still have a slight limp. But leaps and bounds better than it was even just 10 days ago. So there is that light at the end of the tunnel for me, I can see it now....I am a believer, I will be pain free soon. It is just a little uncomfortable and tight now, but getting better every day now! For so long I couldn't discern any improvement, so this is great!!!!

I have a question. How concerned do we have to be about minor infections, like say on our feet or legs? I know the major ones are UTI's and dental problems, but what about small ones? I have an infected toe nail that is red, a little swollen and sore. Of course my husband has treated it with peroxide and neo sporin, but just wondered if it's anything more to worry about. I know infection is a concern for us and we have to be a lot more careful than most. Just wondered if anyone knew.

Well hope you all have a good day and feel better than yesterday!

P.S. Energy levels are much better now. Makes a huge difference. When you feel some oomph, you can do much more, and in turn you feel more normal and more like yourself. And feeling more like yourself gives you more confidence to do more. It's all connected, the healing process and our emotions and feelings both need each other....

@RhondaK, I know what you mean about avoiding infections. I've really be cautious about getting around folks with even a sniffle! I don't have a bit of advice about your red and swollen toe...maybe a phone call to your doctor would answer your question and relieve your mind. I'm sure someone on this forum will have good advice for you.

And I'm so happy with your distance of walking and your diminishing pain levels! You're right, it takes some time but every day gets better! Way to go, girl! You're rocking that new hip!

@RhondaK, I know you will enjoy the holidays as much as I will this year and we'll both be so thankful for our new hips and the opportunity it affords us for a good and happy life. I'm so thankful for you. Blessings to you and your loved ones.

@beachgal, so glad to hear from you. I needed a pick me up and you always come through for me and everyone here. Your optimism cheers me up and your amazing recovery keeps me from letting those doubts creep in. Been going without the cane a lot lately, feeling pretty good, until today when pain is some worse than it has been lately. So thinking I better switch back, maybe especially when going for my mile walk. Feels somewhat like going backwards, but better safe than sorry.

Yes we are all so thankful for the gift of a new start in life. I for one am so grateful for that and my wonderful friends and family. As well as friends here that have lent me such amazing support and encouragement the past couple of months.

Your Thanksgiving sounds like it will be wonderful. Family traditions are what make our holidays special and why we love them. Ours will be at our daughter and son-in-law's house this year, rather than ours, but we will all be there as a family, so the tradition is intact. Found out today both of my daughters will not have to work (sometimes they do). Made me so happy! We are blessed!

@Rhonda K i just noticed that we are very close neighbors. I live in Chino Hills. Hi neighbor.

Nice job on the walking. I am walking with the cane on hills and no cane on flat surfaces. I find it amazing how strong I feel and then today I was sore. My hamstrings. I think it is just the body adjusting to full weight. I did two walks yesterday. Both were 0.7 miles. Today I could only do one. All part of the recovery process I figure.

Thanksgiving is such a blessed time. I am so happy you will have your girls with you. It is so nice to have family together. Everyone is coming to my house. I made a list for help this year. Of course my mom will be out the day before to make sure all is in order. With the energy drain, I know I can't do it all as I normally do. We have so much to be grateful for this year.

Keep pushing along. You are doing great.

@xtina16405 well we surely are neighbors!! I spend more time in Chino Hills than Montclair. We live on the very south end, shop and go to restraints in your area more than ours!

Sounds like we are very similar as far as where we are In recovery. We proceed ahead, then have a little hiccup come along. At least we know it's normal and common. Keeps me calm knowing it's not just me.

Yes thanks, it's great my girls will both be having Thanksgiving with us! I feel so bad when one or both have to work on holidays. This is a lucky year indeed! It will be a little strange to turn it over to others. That has never happened, but like you, I knew I wouldn't have the energy. Doesn't mean I can't be in the kitchen and do a little supervising......lol. But not much, unless I'm asked. That's my plan.

Well maybe I'll see you at Costco, Applebee's, or Tahoe Joes sometime!!!! Lol. I'll be the lady with the "hurry cane", with just a slight limp, but walking straight, feet straight, and a smile on my face!

Hi there @Rhonda K Sounds like you are getting there!!! Trouble is it IS definitely about 3 steps forward and 1 back during this recovery. One day you think you've cracked it and the next.... Not so!
You are so right.... This recovery is so much more than just physical ..... It's so much more of an emotional roller coaster than anything I've ever done before......
But, you are doing well with your walking .... It was about 9 months before I gave up using a crutch/cane & even now if I'm going shopping ( which is the worst kind of walking) I'll take one with me..... I've kind of accepted that it is a facilitator rather than an obstacle.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving with your daughters.... Sounds like a lovely family time.
I've got 14 ( inc one dog ) at mine for Xmas and even now... A year out... Hoping I will have the stamina for the 3 days!!! Chrissie xx

@Hoppy Nanny thanks! I think I totally identify with you and your recovery journey. I have a pretty strong feeling that you and I are a little slower at healing up and moving up for what ever reason than most. Not that there is anything wrong, it's just our bodies and systems operate on a slower pace maybe. Being honest a few times I was beginning to wonder, then you would pop in and tell me your experience of taking a little longer just like me. Made me quit worrying so much about that one step back. It helped a lot!

Hope you get lots of rest to build up that stamina before your big Xmas get together. Hope by then I can at least partially handle our normal celebration. Pretty sure I will still have to ask for more help than usual, but just the same it will be so great having much less pain than last year. Hope by next year non of us has to think about any pain, just the happiness of the holidays, our friends far and wide, and our families to cherish! Thank you so much!

Hi everyone. Just a little update. Haven't had much to report lately but today I am a happy lady.....as I've been saying, my recovery has been much slower than so many on here, so my milestones are somewhat behind most, but finally a few are here and I am VERY happy about my progress! Been out Xmas shopping for last two days without cane. And today I was the driver and hubby the passenger! At 12 weeks that's slow for most but for me it's great!!! I wondered how I would feel this morning after so much walking and standing yesterday but to my surprise felt good. I hadn't driven before now, not so much because of hip pain, but knee pain. I am really having trouble with a sore and stiff knee on op leg since my surgery. But finally getting better.

Just wanted to let anyone out there that feels discouraged and is worried they aren't where others are, I know I was, not to worry. Hang in there. One day you will be surprised by feeling that pain diminish and feel strong and can do some things you couldn't before. It really will happen!
