Best method of protest is to let your feet do the talking and find yourself another PT!

@RhondaK...have never, ever done a clamshell! Leave 'em alone Hun .....hope the pain wears off soon. My crutches gave me sore hands...I wore black leather gloves to help with the soreness...but was on them for 12 weeks! Then one crutch until 6 months as per my physio....worked well for me! Xx

Just a quick update. Had Pt appointment today. Really hoping to graduate from walker to cane but didn't get the answer I was hoping for. He said I'm am almost there, but not quite. He said my gait is still not where he wants it to be. Apparently my steps are not even or smooth enough. Will really work on those issues and set my sights on next week. (Calling on more patience). He says everything is normal so doing my best to take everything in stride.

The good news: I discussed my pain issues in knee and quad muscle with some of exercises . He said don't do those. I told him I was glad he said that because I already had. He wants me to concentrate on stretching moves for now and a few of the strengthening ones that don't hurt. Those only every other day. I can do that....he came out with a piece of PVC pipe and I thought "whoa what is that for?" Haha. Then I remembered reading on here about foam rollers to loosen up tight muscles so didn't freak too much. Sure enough that's what he used it for. It did hurt he was pushing so hard on my thigh, but he would check and tell me it was working. Lo and behold when I stood up off the table I could feel a difference in the tightness, so it was a hurt so good kind of thing. So now hubby came home and cut a piece of it so he can do it for me.

Oops...let me finish lol
Just will plug along, take it one day at a time, and wait for each milestone as patiently as I can. But I will be happy when I get off this walker! Lol

Whew really tired. Went for short walk this morning and tried stationary bike for first time. A whole ten minutes! Lol. Then had my shower. Hubby and I went out for some lunch, then grocery store. Made it pretty well except had a very quick little dizzy spell in grocery store so went to car then and there. My arms are really tired from walker, you would think by now I would have muscles built up...but no!

Just wanted to tell anyone with tight quads, that the rolling trick really works! Just a piece of pvc pipe or even a rolling pin will work. You have to have someone do it for you I think because you have to press really hard, but after only two days mine feel so much more normal. Of course they will probably tighten back up over night maybe, but I think it is worth a try.

Ok, feet up, ice on hip. That's about it for one day.

Sounds like a busy day @Rhonda K...hope you've scheduled rest in for tomorrow.
Glad your pipe/roller helps...I bought one from my PT & it is very good ...wish I'd have known about the pipe.
You will get off the walker soon enough...your body will tell you when x

Oh, goodness, you are SO close and doing SO well!! You should be tired! This recovery business is hard work, even if our hips don't need much help, we still try!!

I walked in our park about 1.5 miles today but felt myself starting to limp so I quit. I'm not practiced on uneven surfaces and I think that may have triggered some old habits. It was nice to be outside and I still had zero hip pain so I've got nothing to complain about.

You're creeping up behind me!! Let's go for a walk after Thanksgiving!!!

Beachgal I am yearning for that walk (sans walker). Got my eye on that fun activity for sure. The simple things these days are all I need. I sure know I will never take walking normally for granted ever again.

It sure is good to just get out and do a few "normal things" again and worth the tired feeling. Time has passed without me it sometimes seems, feels surreal sometimes. Getting out of the house counter acts that feeling for me. Just the small thing of my thigh not feeling quite so tight today thrilled me. It's progress! Thinking I will be walking off that Thanksgiving dinner after all!

Oh my goodness on the pipe! Wow, that sounds like it would hurt.
I probably need that on my IT band.... I need to schedule some followon sessions with PT. But, I really don't want to do anything that hurts. Does it really feel better later?

@MajorHeidi. I bought one as mine leg from hip to knee was stiff...it really helps...here's a picture!

@Rhonda K You really seem to be doing fantastic! When beachgal 1st did a clamshell, I googled it because I had never heard of them. Just looking at the description & pictures was enough to make me say "no dang chance"! Fortunately, my physio has never asked me to do them ~ Glad to hear your's is reasonable as well. My wrists, arms & shoulders constantly ache from the walker so I am with you dreaming of walking without aides. Sometimes when I wake at night for the washroom, I have a fleeting second of thinking I can just get up and walk, lol

@Hoppy Nanny Thanks for the pic! That is not at all what I was thinking of......
Funny, that looks like a dog toy with handles.. haha
Did you get that from Amazon? and what is it 'called'?

@MajorHeidi, well it does hurt when rolling on your thigh. I'm guessing the theory behind it is to stretch those muscles out, and that requires some pressure, so it has to be pushed into your muscles rather hard to work. Although it could be that I just feel the pain more than others because my muscles are still feeling torn, twisted, pulled, wrenched and every other painful description . Lol. If you are farther out maybe it doesn't hurt nearly as much. But I think it does help loosen up that stiff feeling . You can even use a rolling pin. I will keep trying it. That stiffness is annoying. @Hoppy Nanny that looks interesting. I'm sure it is the same concept and those balls would roll down and over to get a stretch on the muscle. Maybe would work better. I might have to look for that. Thanks!

@Carriemay60 , yes those clam shells are on the shelf for now, probably forever actually! Thanks, I am doing ok because I made some baby step progress in the last two days so I feel good about that. Just some simple stretching has improved things, so I'm thrilled. I know that feeling about thinking you can just get out of bed and go. The exact same thing has happened with me for just a split second! Then you remember and go back to reality, but everyday we get closer to it. I am taking some small steps on op leg without holding on a few times a day. It still hurts but maybe getting a little better. It hurts deep in hip where tissues are still healing. I have been a slow healer for a few years, don't know why, not diabetic or anything, so I guess I have to chalk it up to just how it is with me.. I don't think I'm that far behind, so will wait it out. Because of this site and reading how it is with so many others, I know it will happen.

I'm still not doing clamshells. Might never do them. Haha

These days seem to pass slowly when you're anxious for progress but you will find yourself moving better so quickly once it starts. Then, no more excuses! It's just the best. Every day gets better!! So proud of you!!

Hi I can see a lot of people have a fairly good recovery from the hip replacement surgery but at the moment I feel that I must be one in millions who has not.
I am 6 mts post opp and im so deprest as I have pain in the hip joint and a 1" difference in leg length so now walking rather hobbling along with pain in both my hips and back.
I've seen the surgeon once and he told me that he couldn't get the ball right into the new socket .
After talking to the nurse she said it's sticking out a bit and that's why you are in pain and it stings every now and again but all ive been given is a foam heal placement that just makes my foot hurt and it keeps moving down my boot.
Im at my wits end my hip is very stiff and ive tried going for walks but im in too much pain now my surgeon has left and retired so im in a mess anyone else had this problem?

@cowgirl, I am so sorry you are having such a tough time! I only wish I had words of wisdom for you but I think you really meed more help than I can offer. My thinking is you must see a new OS if you possibly can. I know you are in a bad place, but don't give up. Keep pursuing all avenues. There is help for you out there. There are specialist who deal with these issues and they can best advise you. The only Minimal advice I can give you is stretch that hip to help with stiffness. I lay on the edge of my bed and hang my leg off for a good stretch for 60 secs, then have my hubby push my foot back for a stronger stretch, then again for as far as I can go. And also rolling my quad muscles down to the knee with a roller or rolling pin, really helps with the tightness and the stiff feelings. I sure wish you luck and will be looking for you to post and let us know. Please don't give up.

Hi all, just had to send a little update. Today is the day! I'm feeling a lot better. I woke up this morning and I just knew. The pain I was feeling in the hip is much less today and less soreness in knee and thigh. So happy for progress! Rode stationary bike a little, stretched out muscles, went for a walk. Felt so good. Took a shower and still had energy to spare. Guess time is finally working its magic. Guess everyone says there is that day when they "turn the corner". Think today is my day. Hope all those out there that aren't doing so well have their day soon too. Hope everyone has a great weekend.
