@Rhonda K Well well girl! When you turn that corner, leave a trail of popcorn so I can find you when I catch up! I do remember turning a corner just from the surgery - such a wonderful feeling to come out of one phase and enter another, more positive reality. Keep up the great work!

@Rhonda K

I am going on 7 weeks out and I just started one leg calf raises. I think that too many PTs take a cookie-cutter approach to rehab. If you have concerns, tell your PT asap and if it doesn't change....perhaps it would be a good idea to get a new Physio! I am. Very lucky as I started Physio in Jan 2014 to keep my hip in the best shape possible for racing season and I have the same person to this day!

I hope that by stopping most of the unnecessary exercises, your pain levels will lower.

Take care

Cheryl

@Carriemay60, we're both climbing that trail, rather slowly, but moving on up. We're gonna get there! I'm following your lead when it comes to being determined and keeping my spirits up. It helps so much.

@CanukTriMom, you are so knowledgable when it comes to what works and what is not advisable for sore muscles due to your extensive training. I read your posts to get an idea of what you are doing and not doing. I will never be in the shape you are but your advise is a great guideline for me. I have stopped the PT that only made me more sore and am mostly concentrating on stretching. Every other day I am adding a few strengthening moves slowly and make sure they don't hurt. Hope that is a good plan for me. My PT agrees so think we are on the same page at least for now. I see him tomorrow, and again I have high hopes he will get me off the walker and onto the cane. I have really worked on the things he wanted me too, so keeping my fingers crossed.

@Hoppy Nannie, thanks for encouragement! Yes on to that next corner! One corner at a time!

@Rhonda K

I am so glad to hear that you and your PT are on the same page. As always, don't do anything to the point of pain and tell the PT what is working and what isn't, they do want to know. Your slow and steady approach is the ticket and remember there will be discomfort as those muscles are being reactivated and they are cranky! I find when I come across that situation, the repetitive nature makes it easier the next time I do the exercise.

My saying to my triathlon group is "remember, no one ever got hurt going too slow"

Take care

Cheryl

@RhondaK, I've been MIA for a few days, all is well, just trying to get a few things at work in a place where we can travel this week a bit. What a great "problem" to have, right?? All my BS friends are invited to join us in the NC mountains for a little R & R!

It won't be too much longer and you'll be "cut loose", too! Just be patient and don't overdo those PT exercises. The times I overdid, honestly, were the only times I really ached. Not doing that again. Slow and steady.

@CanukTriMom, I'm listening. I know you know of what you speak when it comes to keeping those muscles in good shape. Like the old joke I have muscles that hurt where I didn't know I had muscles, (no lie). So I do have to get them back to normal with some stretching and slowly working and moving them. Knee and quad muscle are feeling less tight and sore, so think my routine is okay for now. But yes going slow is what my body is saying. Nervous to find out if I am ready for the cane tomorrow. My fear is I will not be able to do it without a slight limp and I hear they want no limping. Hope I am ready, but if not will give it some more "time". Sigh.

@beachgal, I know you will be having a beautiful and relaxing get a way. Must be totally gorgeous there this time of year. Hope you celebrate your new lease on life to the max and and we will be waiting to hear all about it. Have a great time but do take care of that new hip. I know you will!

Yes!!! Progress!! I'm cleared to use cane around house and slowly transition to outside a little at a time. Seems like a huge leap forward for me. Just tried it. Walked a block up and down in neighborhood. It was a little more tiring but was already tired from PT. If I start out fresh I think I will be fine. Feeling good!!!!

@Rhonda K well done with the cane. They are a bit more challenging since you can't lean into them. If you feel the least bit unsteady try using the cane in the house first and then gradually transition. You are right - start outside when you are not tired. You are doing great!

@Rhonda K

I found it really beneficial to go slowly with the cane and focus on the sound of your footsteps...that they sound symmetrical. You will quite tired at the beginning but it will pass as the more natural your gait becomes.

Have a great day

Cheryl

Hi everyone........hope you all are having a good day. It is a wonderful day here in our parched Southern California......we got rain!!!! Nothing that will wipe out our horrible draught, but we will take it. We need it so bad.

I really wanted to post only positive news for awhile but wanted to ask if anyone else has this problem out there. About every few months I get vertigo, been a problem I have dealt with for maybe five years or so. Well it started up again about three days ago and it's awful when dealing with not walking too steadily to begin with. So now I'm back to the walker only, even inside since I have two steps to navigate in my house and so afraid to get dizzy and fall. I'm sure it's not related to meds since I only take Tylenol and once in awhile 800 mg Ibuprofen. My GP in the past hasn't been too helpful with this issue, just gave me anti nausea meds. I always just wait it out and it eventually goes away, but now is the worst time for it. The excitement of using a cane didn't last long lol. Anyway when the room is spinning it is soooo scary, even though the Dr. says it is most likely an inner ear problem, nothing serious. Anyway that's what is bugging me now. Anyone else out there that deals with this? If so any advice?

@Rhonda K Wow ~ I really feel horrible for you! I have had that very briefly in the past and did not like it one bit able bodied. I don't blame you for feeling nervous at all. I think if I were in your shoes (failing some magic solution) I would stick with the walker and walk as close to the wall as you can. I would also revert to your 1st days at home and make sure you have some supervision on those stairs just to be safe. I sure hope it passes quickly for you!

@rhondak. I had vertigo. I like to say had because I (knock on wood) haven't had an episode in a year. I take anti-vert for it. I was in a very bad boating accident 7 years ago and had a critical head injury. I am good now but the vertigo was with me. The only thing that worked for me was the anti vert. I did go to a chiropractor to. I feel I get it when my upper back/shoulders are tense. When I moved to the cane, I get a pain in my left shoulder. I now ice it along with the right hip after I walk. I may join @craftdee and get a massage for my shoulders and upper back. Scared to have anyone touch my hip/right leg. I wish I had an answer for it. All the people I know just take the anti-vert and rest. Vertigo is an awful feeling. I hope you get your balance back and the spinning feeling goes away. No fun.

I was so excited for you and the cane. Don't give up. And take the anti-vert.

I didn't wash my hair for 18 days. When the doc said I could shower, the hair got a double sudsing and conditioning. That first shower felt so good after taking spit baths for so long. You are doing great.

@Carriemay60 yes for sure, I am sticking with walker and taking those steps very carefully. About the only thing I can do right now is not turn my head too quickly and stand up slowly and for sure don't bend over. Since I can't anyway that is no problem....but it is horrible and scary. Just really hoping it eases up. You know what they say about one step forward etc etc. I really wanted to be able to get going with the cane. But have to look at it as just a short delay. Should be getting better soon. Thanks for caring.

@xtina16405 well anyone who has had it, like you and I knows how awful it is. Sorry to hear about your accident. Wow now THAT is scary stuff! Glad you recovered. Is anti-vert a med that needs a prescription? I'm sure it is but wondering why my Doctor never gave it to me.....if this keeps up, will have to go see her. I should anyway cause this is an ongoing problem with me. I know the feeling about not touching the incision area. I just now can touch mine myself, and then just lightly lol. I don't like it when my hubby touches it. Hope your shoulder pain gets better. Don't we have enough pain without other body parts acting up? I would think so. Thanks for the top. I will have to find out if I can get that. I really didn't know there was anything for it. That would be wonderful if it helped me.

@bobbi speaking of washing hair, that's what started all this. I bent my head down to wash my hair in the kitchen sink and the room started spinning like crazy. Won't be doing that for awhile. Will stick to washing in shower. But yes that first shampoo is the best feeling. Glad you got there.

@rhondak the anti-vert is a prescription. It does help though. I really feel for you. It is bad enough with the hip pain but being off balance is no fun. Get plenty of rest. That may help too. Thinking of you.

@Rhonda K I agree, I was talking on a thread the other day about feeling like I live with a Jack-in-the-box and every time I relax that dang things pops up with something new to cope with! lol :wowspring:

So sorry you are dealing with your inner ear 'vertigo @ Rhonda K just when you were progressing. You are right to stick with the walker for the time being.

I had an ear infection a couple of years ago which left me with 'room spinning', nausea for months....they thought it was menieres but in the end it was due to inner ear infection,.. They suggested I gave up caffeine...which did help to a certain extent...they also suggested that it was exacerbated by stress as I was struggling with severe hip pain. I do believe now that stress brings it on.

I fo hope you feel better soon....ever tried meditation & relaxation....it really helped me....thinking of you...Chrissie x

@Hoppy Nanny, well it could be stress, I'm sure that brings it on. If I know one thing, it is stress can cause so many different reactions in our bodies. Things that wouldn't seem related at all, but it is. My Doctor thinks it's some kind of calcium Chrystal's that float around in my inner ear that touches whatever is in there that controls our sense of balance. She says this because it usually happens when I turn my head fast in any direction or turn over in bed. I guess my restrictions are good for one thing right now. I can't turn over lol. I've been moving slowly today and trying not to move my head too much and lying down slowly, that kind of thing. It hasn't been as bad today. Hopefully will be gone in a few days. Then I can get back to concentrating on the important task of getting stronger with cane. Thanks for your thoughts and I will work on relaxing techniques too. I need to control the stress for sure.
