TKR Knees 1 AND 2 up and running

In my first 2-3 weeks someone always went down before me and stayed at the bottom until I got up the stairs. Don't do the steps unless hubby is home and as everyone is saying, just go up/down once a day.

Knee 1 is doing great! It's super knee because you took care of it! Just rest both of them as much as you can.

Whew. Thank you all for the help with stairs. Hubby is going with me. I may just hibernate up here tomorrow -- that quad just doesn't feel very stable yet.

I had forgotten how complicated everything is the first week. What a production just to get everything to bedroom. But I'm in bed now, and am liking it. Not much pain, just occasional bursts. I'm sure as the local wears off completely, the pain will come. I'm taking oxy every 4 hours just as prevention for now.

I hope everybody is comfy and gets a peaceful night. I'm reading an excellent book - I think TML :) recommended - Nightingale. And reading on oxy means I get to read it again -- what a deal!

Prayers for all my Smartie friends.

A possible idea for you to consider - when we moved into our house five years ago, with my awful knees, one of the first things I did was add another handrail, so have one on each side. I have an upstairs cane and a downstairs one, and several big over the shoulder bags on each floor, so I am always hands free going up and down. My housemate whose knees work fine likes my set up and finds security in having the two handrails. Even young healthy people can take bad tumbles!
You sound as though you are doing so well! I'm so happy for you, Keep it up (and ignore that idiot pt!).

I rely on my two handrails too. We put them in for my husband and now I am glad they are there. They take the weight off the knees on those bad days when you need a little help.

What a great idea you girls have! Is your Hubbie able to put in another handrail? I have 2 handrails on my stairs as well and the first thing Home PT said to me when she first came was, 'Hooray! Those 2 handrails will make stairs safer and easier to manage.' Be safe, above all else, knee-twin sister. You don't want to fall. And please do consider staying on one floor until those quads begin firing. Wishing you a peaceful and restful night.

I have two handrails as well. I also have a few of the 31 utility totes that I use for lugging groceries up the stairs, lugging things down the stairs and used them for carrying school supplies.
I hope you enjoy The Nightingale. It was our book club read in the spring and I thought an amazing book.

Great! Why did we not think of 2 rails? You guys are brilliant. Hubby will be making a Home Depot run today.

I'm staying upstairs today. In bed except for short walks/bathroom . The local anesthesia definetly wore off about 10 last night. Finally got the pain under control at 4. Better now. I hope that level never comes back. I think I remember it just hit that 9-10 level once with first knee. Whew.

Karri - Nightingale is wonderful. I've retread the first chapters 3-4 times (brain fog) but that is good -- I always hate to get to
The end of a really good book!

Shelia, you seem to be doing well except for that encounter with the pain monster last night, I'm glad it's under control and I hope it stats there...

I plan to reread The Nightingale when I'm on oxy. It'll be new to me then!
Rest well knee-twin sister.

Maybe in a few weeks you can really enjoy The Nightingale. That brain fog is major! :what:

We read the nightingale in book club too, then we realized most of this past year we had been reading ww2 books, and as good as they all were, we voted to take a little break from that particular time. Our last one was A Man Called Ove, which we all really liked- usually at least one of us is a dissenter, but not that one.

I'm enjoying the re-reading. More book for the money.

Day 4 -knee 2. Slept well with almost no breakthrough pain. I'm taking the oxy every 4 hours on schedule . I don't want another pain explosion.

The staircase is too narrow for second rail. That's OK. I'm nesting out upstairs and enjoying it. Good excuse not to hear college football. I'll do my quad-starters and gentle exercises and will go down tomorrow -- the new knee no longer feels like jello.

Knee 1 is being an amazing trooper. She has taken over and is not complaining. I'm trying to remember to share ice and pampering with her, but I'm so grateful not to have pain.

Whoops! Almost late for a nap. Comfort prayers being said for all right now.

I am glad you got the pain under control and was able to sleep well. I have just one stair rail also, and I have found that using my cane in the other hand works well and makes me feel much more stable especially going down.

You've got this! No need to rush with anything. Ice, ice baby . . . :ice:

Shelia, I've been thinking about you. It's a relief to have the second knee done, right? It's true that getting to bed, especially the first week, is a chore. Wears you out. Even with hubby helping, the physical getting into bed was exhausting for me and such a relief when I finally got my legs into bed and my head on the pillow - and then realize I've forgotten something and poor hubby has to go fetch it. Here's hoping you have a smooth recovery for #2.

Yes, we've got this, TML and FG. The Quick-Knee-Turnaround sisters.

I'm wheezing like a banshee. And refusing to go down the "it's a clot" trail. After knee 1 I think I had cough/wheezing on day 3, and a fever. I don't have a fever now, just cough and musical wheezes. I'm using the incentive spirometer and found an old allbuterol inhaler. Calling doc this time of day on weekend would just mean a trip to ER. If it gets worse or I get a fever, I'll call, but hopefully this is just a little post anesthesia inflammation.

Otherwise, very good day. Resting in bed except for heel slides, pumps and walker laps. It feels great to walk. No pain, but I'm keeping up with the oxy. I'm using the blue elevator instead of pillow stack - not quite as comfortable, but gets my toes higher. Will use pillows for sleep.

Hubby made roast and the fixings for dinner. I hate to tell him all I want is saltines and a real Coke. :)

I've had a nasty cough and wheezing for 2 weeks now. It's going around.

Keep up with the spirometer frequently and monitor your temp but I'll bet it's temporary. Remember to drink lots of water to flush out all that gunk from surgery. You really are doing well. I especially like hearing no pain. I'm so glad you're staying on one floor for awhile. I remember how hard it is to eat but try just a bite of Hubbie'a healthy dinner, especially the protein. Sips of coke are sooo good. Rest well. :chillpill:
