Wow! Does that look good!

Up due to intense hip pain. Wondering if my lumbar issues are flaring up. 4-5 ridiculopothy, causes pain in hip and feet if not in check.

Yes, that sounds plausible. Even some of us without diagnosed back problems have had hip or back pain for a while after tkr.

Had a rough night. Slept in bed but tossed and turned. Pain med dreams are wicked bad. Someone kept coming to take the pillow I had between my knees. Woke up and could not bear weight on my knee. Did home excersices trying to loosen it up, didnt help. Had PT this morning and he massaged my IT band for most of the session trying to relieve it with minimum success. Put me on light resistance which resulted in dipping blood sugar, type 2 diabetic. Had taken metformin er with morning meds. After a glucose pill and granola bar felt strong enough for ice and stem. Have been elevating and icing all afternoon. Read the piece about massaging and stretching the it band. Hoping after rest, I will be able to bear weight.

I might be wrong, but I think it's way too early for you to be doing resistant exercises. You need a lot of healing before you do that. If I'm wrong, the advisors will let you know. I don't know if anyone has told you, but you don't have to do any exercises to get your knee back to working order. Many of us never did any at all.

Thanks for the link and info. Testing and icing and back in the recliner. Is it possible with all the toss and turn I strained/stressed something?

It's still only about 3 weeks since you had this major surgery. This is still in the stage where all your tissues are still angry from the trauma. They need time and gentle treatment, so they can recover. They're wounded, not lazy, and all they need is a little, gentle exercise.

I think it's most likely that you have over-stressed them with too much exercise, and this explains all your discomfort.

Probably right, spent today icing, elevating and resting.

I have rested a lot today and iced and elevated and feel better. Was wondering about heat. Does it play a part in therapy as well?

You can use heat on your muscles, but never on your knee. Why not? Because heat brings more blood to the area, which will contribute to increased swelling.

Glad you are feeling better! The pictures look great! Is the sciatica better? Have you been able to connect it too anything in particular? Mine seems to get worse if I sit on my couch recliner too long...think it is the angle. Maybe PT can help you with it some.

Sciatica is better, or overcome by IT band pain, have rested, iced and elevated for two days. Wish I had a more comfortable recliner. Struggling with not being able to get a full nights sleep.

I bought an electric recliner anticipating a bilateral, but doctor refused. Anyway, that thing was hard. I put a couple of pillows in the seat and it helped a lot. It did lay all the way back like a bed, which I used quite a bit. But, boy was I glad when I could switch back to my comfortable one! Pillows might help yours be more comfortable for you. It seems like in the early days a recliner is the only way to be able to sleep.

I am having issues with my sugar levels crashing. I have lost 15 lbs since my surgery date.

I also lost 15 pounds after my surgery, but just because the pain meds made me not want to eat. I'm now 6 months post-op and my appetite definitely came back! The diabetes will complicate things for you and all I can say is to be careful and try to get stabilized.

I hate to say it, but the lack of sleep is one of the hardest parts of this surgery. I was probably at 5 months before I began to consistently get a good night of sleep. I would wander the house at night, dozing in the recliner, the guest bed, on the couch, or just watching TV or coloring. I had very bad leg spasms and the only thing that seemed to help was sitting in the hard kitchen chair for an hour or so - and that's where I would color since I had nothing else to do. I didn't really mind it so much until I went back to work after 4 weeks, and then I would sit there at night dreading how sleepy I would be at work the next day. Luckily I work at home and was able to take it easy and eventually that problem went away. By the way, I tried Ambien, Advil PM, and melatonin in my attempts to get sleep and they all made it worse. They made me really tired but the underlying cause of the problem still kept me awake and then I was even more miserable. I just tried to accept the fact that I would be up at night and had faith that eventually it would be OK. And it was.

One thing that affected my sleep was overdoing it with exercising. So if you need another reason to not overdo the exercising, there you go.....

It is hard to accept how long it takes to recover from this surgery. You keep thinking you feel better than you did so you should be able to do all kinds of things, and in reality you have a long way to go. Somebody posted pictures once that were taken during a TKR and after seeing those I really understood why it takes so long. Those pics are not for the faint of heart but it gave me a good idea of the trauma my knee and leg underwent. Patience!!!! I swear it does get better, but I also swear it will take longer than you think it should. Keep coming to BoneSmart when you are down or thinking it's not going well and do some reading or post your concerns. The people here are great and most of them have been through, or are currently going through, the same things as you. It is amazing how much it helps to find out you're not alone and other people have gotten through the problems.

Good luck!

Thank you. Woke up throwing up and on a strong heave something happened that sent pain from my hip to my toes. Have an appt with my pc to address the diabetes and the pt wants me to go back to the surgeon to be checked for an infection.

Have you been given any medication for nausea? There is one you can take orally called zofran and also there is a patch called scopolamine that works for three days. Both can be very helpful. Ask when you see your doctor.
