Justine's all done

I've had a bit of a set-back today. Getting into the shower this morning, I slipped, lost hold of one of my crutches and took all my weight on my 'bad' leg. Thank goodness Graham was with me because I think I'd have fallen otherwise, however, because he was with me he feels it was his fault! It was no-one's fault - a complete accident!

I'm so sore now and quite shaken by it. I'm reminded how vulnerable we are and feel very emotional. At the time, I just started crying like a baby - partly because of the pain and partly because I got such a fright! My girls heard me and rushed into the bathroom and they got upset. Oh, what a mess!

On a happier note, I had my dressing removed at the doctors yesterday. The nurse said it was healed and looked good, although I covered it again after my slip just because I'm nervous about everything now!

Oh I'm sorry to hear that Justine. Of course he feels like it's his fault, but you know it's not so he's got to understand that as well. Those falls or near misses are very scary and then you just are so cautious afterwards and afraid of every movement.

Get some rest now and hopefully your nerves and your family nerves will settle down.

I'm so sorry, Justine, about the slip! At least you didn't fall on it! Just take a deep breath and resolve to continue to be as careful as you can. We all have our scary moments...and then we have good ones....which hopefully will soon outnumber the bad ones. At least that's what I'm telling myself!

Aw Justine - not to worry. We have all had a trip or slip early out. Trying to navagate with crutches is tough. No one is to blame.

Don't be surprised if you are very sore. You had a bit of a jolt to already tender soft tissues and muscles. Rest and ice big time. I am sure you didn't do any damage.

Take care Justine!

oh no - so glad your partner was there to catch you - it makes me think twice about getting in w/ no one around which I've been doing!!!

I hope you are not too sore - make sure you get some extra rest!

take care,
xoxo,
Linda

I would have been surprised if you hadn't cried - what a shock to your system. Only answer is tears and lots of them!
Very healing are tears! :wink1:

Oh, Justine! I just gasped when I read about your slip and am so relieved that it was just a slip and and not a fall and that you do seem to be recovering. How scared you must have been, Sweetie. I hope you are not too sore today and are feeling better emotionally. xo, V

Hi Justine, just checking to see how you are doing.... hope the fall didn't cause too much pain. Take care!

Hi there

I'm still a bit sore from my slip. I also have a sore shoulder - I wonder if I jolted that too - and it is making the crutches more difficult, especially up and down stairs.

More and more I am feeling weak and stiff in the mornings. I don't know if this is caused by the jolt or if it's just natural, but why would it start at Day 11/12?

Like everyone, I have good days and not-so-good days; the last couple of days have been not-so-good.

One positive note - before surgery I was worried that my weight was creeping up due to lack of movement. Well, I have a really poor appetite right now; I'm only eating when I know I have to, and I've lost that extra weight (I still have the original "extra" weight - I'm nowhere near skinny - but it's a boost, I suppose).

Are you missing your night time meds? How about the swelling? Are you seeing more swelling in the morning.

I remember stiffness and lots of soreness after my first post-op fall. I wouldn't worry about it - just be sure and ice and elevate. Sounds like you had a bit of a jolt.

Jacey - You hit the nail on the head!

Over the last couple of nights I've slept through my 'due time' for meds. I've taken this as a very positive sign that I can start reducing through the day soon, but it didn't occur to me that it was linked to the stiffness in the morning.

Well done - I'm impressed!!!

Oh, forgot to say - No, no more swelling in the morning. In fact swelling overall is going down, slowly but seady.

Thanks

You are just learning from my mistakes Justine! Hope it helps!

Hey Justine

Sorry to hear about your slip and glad that your man was around to catch you.
Early days yet Justine so the good days and the bad days will still be around for a while but be patient as the good days will outnumber the bad.

Hi everyone

I have not updated for about a week. Another setback has got me down and I could use some advice.

I mentioned in my post last week that I'd hurt my shoulder. Well, the pain got worse and worse until I couldn't even move my arm. My GP diagnosed Painful Arc Syndrome, brought on by the use of crutches - I have a shoulder weakness from a long time ago.

As you can imagine, using crutches is very difficult. My GP advised that I shouldn't even try to use them for a few days, which means that I sat on my bottom for 3 days, moving only to go to the bathroom or to bed! My shoulder remains painful, although not quite as bad, but I am still having difficulty with the crutches. This means my hips is not getting the movement it should.

This has really got me down. All I'm doing at the moment is watching TV. I love to read but I can't even concentrate long enough to do that. I am SO worried that my recovery is being compromised.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to help this go away, or other exercises I can do to help my overall recovery? I am awaiting Physio advice too, but anything that might help in the meantime would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
J x

Geez Justine, I'm so sorry about your shoulder. Why don't you use the walker instead? My crutches caused tendinitis in both wrists.

Thanks Renate

I don't think a walker would make any difference. The pain comes from taking my weight - through my hands and arms to my shoulders.

I think the big problem is that I'm non-weight bearing on my new hip so my shoulders are taking all my body weight with every second step.

Thanks for trying

I don't know, Justine.....I'll tag Jo and see if she has any ideas for you. @Josephine:

From what you describe as the problem, it does sound like a walker or the arm crutches would still give you that same problem of weight transfer up your arms to the shoulder.
