Congratulations Justine! So glad you are doing well. Don't be afraid to speak up though. If yu are a "7 out of 10" I agree with Jaycey, ask for more meds.
They more than likely will increase them if you ask, but that's the secret...you DO have to ask. Don't be afriad to, you are the paient and have a right to be comfortable.
Make sure they are giving you an ice pack too. Good luck Justine and remember, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease"...
Thanks for all your comments. I had a bad day yesterday - a doc from the pain teaam said my oral morphine should be doubled but when he left the nurse said he was still only going to give me the same amount and see how i do. I felt so annoyed but couldnt speak up. I did complain later though so next time it was increased. I've just had 4.5hrs sleep (the most so far) so it must have worked. Heres to a better day today! Had problems standing up y'day (nausea, faint) too tired to go into detail now. Will fill you in later after i see physio again.
Hi Justine, great you got some sleep, and you stood up. Low blood pressure and low iron levels are very common after surgery. Hang in there. It's only getting better.
Isn't that first sleep great? I remember waking up the day after my op and being shocked that I had slept 5 hours. Had not done that in months!
Have you asked for anti-nausea meds. The morphine might be making you a bit nauseous. And don't worry about the dizzy feeling - as Renate says low BP is very common post-op.
Hi.
I am feeling good this evening! Managed to stand up, walk a few steps and sat in chair for a while without feeling sick.
I'm still sore but not its unmanageable - regular morphine is doing the trick.
I spoke with my surgeon today and he said my strong bones were 'a challenge' for him and that the channel for the 'spike' (my word not his) was so narrow he had to use a much shorter one. He seems to think that is fine. Hope so!! He also said my joint was knackered (his word, this time).
And i'm getting home on saturday!!!
Justine
Just seen the surgeon again and i'm getting home this evening!! I've passed all my tests - crutches, stairs, toilet etc. Just some paperwork to complete and i'll be home for a late dinner.
Am elated!
I am home now and very happy to be with my family. They are really looking after me!
I am SO SORE though and very tired. I pushed the staff to let me out of hospital today - I really hope I did the right thing.
Everyone's support on this forum has really meant a lot to me. I have been really touched that people I have never met before have cared enough to send some lovely comments. Thank you all.
Justine, the trip home is a bigger deal than most people expect. Of course you are sore and very tired. Just make sure and ice and elevate and rest, rest, rest. Pain meds regularly. Now the healing begins!
Yep listen to Jacey Justin get they pack of peas or whatever you are gong to use and ice three or four times a day which will help take the swelling down.
Plenty of this to begin with:sleepz: and when you do feel like walking make it is short one's to begin with and once you venture outside short walks up and down the driveway.
If you do everything at a steady pace and don't rush you will see the results, I still have a bit of a stiff back at six months but I am able to do things again.
Hang in there Justine :console:
I'm getting a bit worried about my pain meds. All I have is Co-dydramol 20/500. The hospital couldn't give me anything stronger and my surgeon has taken me off meloxicam cos he says it stops the bones meshing togethrt (or somethinglike that). It's Friday evening and cant see doc till Monday and I'm getting really sore, but I had my last dose of today at 9pm. I have to wait till morning for more. I am lying in bed (watching Jaws!) with an icepack and legs elevated. I hope this is neough
Welcome home again Justine. What a bummer about the pain meds. Hope it will last you through the night. Why not go to ER tomorrow and explain. I did not have enough pain control in the first 5 days, and was to exhausted to raise hell. Never again. You really need it. And have lots and lots of rest and naps. Hope you'll be better soon.
PS: Love Jaws!
7 out of 10 get something for that. I had one episode for about 3 hours chasing pain on day 2 after surgery but they got the meds sorted out and I was fine from there on out. Good luck and welcome to the other side.
