Justine's all done

Justine, there should be an on call doctor for the weekend. Demand that they call in a prescription for you! That is outrageous to send you home on the weekend without enough pain meds after major surgery.

Sorry, but that really gets me PO'd :hissyfit:!

What was the hospital thinking of Justine I got enough pain meds from the Infirmary to last me for quite a while.
Start calling round or call the hospital to chase up pain killers for you.

I called the hospital this morning. I now have tramadol and paracetamol. That should help.

Whew - I was so worried when I started reading your earlier posts. Only days out of surgery you certainly need regular meds!

Hope you are feeling better and getting some much needed rest!

Justine, that's great news and now you can focus your energy on recovery and not worrying about being in pain and getting meds for it.

Liz

Justine, I'm just catching up with your thread. I'm so glad you are safely back home, but hate hearing that you had some ups and downs with pain relief. It does sound like it is squared away now, though, and I hope it stays that way!!! Get plenty of rest, now.....

Amen to that! I wish some of these supposed care takers went through something like this and see how it feels with not enough medication. Heartless they are!

Thank goodness you were heard this time. Do take care...

Hi Girlfriend!

Just now catching up with my 7/19 buddies. it's3:27 am - just a touch of insomnia on my 2nd night home. I am so enjoying being in my own bed though, whatever the hour.

Hope you are continuing to make progress. I also think it's just outrageous that they sent you home without enough meds and also didn't even seem to really listen to your needs in the hospital. Makes me angry, too. Hope you're feeling well enough now to speak up if you need to - or make sure there is someone who will advocate for you. A close friend helped me out in that regard since I wasn't making a whole lot of sense, myself. Thinking of you each day! Vicki

Hi Vicki - Thanks. Been thinking of you too. I hope things are good with you.

In general, my recovery is continuing on a positive note, although today I am in more pain than usual. Perhaps I should start a different thread for this?

The pain is both inside my hip and outside, if that makes sense and it's like a burning sensation. Anyone had this before? Also when I 'walk' (no weight bearing) the pain in my bum cheek (on my bad side) is really bad.

I don't think I am doing more than usual; I'm still being very careful with myself :wink1:

Actually, if I am correct, Jo prefers that we keep all our updates in the same thread. You can always PM her if you have a question...

Justine, you haven't decreased any pain meds have you? It is very important to stay ahead of it. Are you icing the areas? Elevating? Walking too much?

You are just a week out, so I would say what you are felling is totally normal. The more active you become, sometimes we need more medication.

Try the above mentioned and see if you have better results. If not, I say when in doubt, call your OS office, but I'm sure there will be a lot more opinions on this soon from other Smarties.

Hang in there Justine. It will get better, but it will take time...

Hi Justine, you don't need to start a new thread on any of your recovery issues. It's good for us to see your history in one thread. It's also good for you when you look back and see how far you have come!

The pain you are describing sounds like normal post-op pain. It is still very early days for you. Your body went through major trauma. Muscles were stretched and moved around. They are all complaining.

Are you icing and elevating? Regular pain meds? Has this increased since you changed your meds?

Rest, rest and more rest.

Thanks Girls

I haven't started reducing meds yet and I haven't done more walking or PT than usual. I'm resting A LOT, elevating but not icing perhaps as much as I should. I'll do more of that. Thanks

On occasion, pain does elevate and subside from time to time for no apparent reason. When it does, just make sure you stay off your feet more and ice more.

Hi Justine, sorry about your pain. I am sue it's all normal after such a traumatic surgery. Hang in there, and rest a lot. Looking back it was a good thing for me to sleep so much, felt very weak for about 3 - 4 weeks. And keep up with the pain meds, elevate and ice.

I have been icing almost constantly and I really believe it's helping. I got a great homemade ice pack recipie from the pre-surg. education seminar and made a few so I always have one ready:

Pour 1 Cup Rubbing (70% Isopropyl Alcohol) into a large, heavy-duty zip lock freezer bag
Pour 3 Cups tap water into the same freezer bag
Seal the bag and insert into another freezer bag (just in case) and place in freezer .

It comes out nice and slushy - if you like it a little firmer, but still not rock hard - use 50% Isopropyl Alcohol. Or just using less than a cup of the 70% would probably work for a firmer ice pack, as well.

I think that recipe has been posted a few times. Glad to know it's working for you.

Hi All

My recovery is still going pretty well - the pain is lessening, although I mentioned on a different post that this is probably because I'm not bearing weight on my operated side.

I've noticed, when I walk, the foot on my operated side (left) doesn't naturally point forward. It's a real effort for me to force my foot into a forward-pointing position (and it's quite sore on my hip to do that). If I leave my foor in a comfortable position, it actually sits 40 to 50 degrees to the left.

When I was in hospital a few of the nurses noticed that my foot was at a weird angle - my entire left leg seemed to have rolled outwards. They even called a doc to check it out, although she didn't have much to say about it, to be honest. Plus, it was at a stage where I was so doped and tired, I didn't pay much attention  .

I have no physio appointments or anything so all I'm doing is trying to force it straight. Is this the right thing to do, do you think?

Thanks,
J x

Hi Justine, the angle of your foot could just be some very tight muscles post-op. I remember thinking the same thing and gradually the angle decreased.

You really can't judge anything until you are weight bearing.

Sounds like you are doing great!
