What a great report Joe , sounds like you are doing well. Driving after 5 days, we are not alound to drive for 6 weeks here in NZ

Hi, Joe. Just caught up with your progress. You're sounding great! Isn't it interesting how we savor the simple things (chicken soup!) more these days? In a recent post you brought up regret. It's funny, but I was at an event last night (everyone was impressed I was walking so well at five weeks post-surgery) and someone asked "Are you sorry you didn't do it sooner?" This was the first time anyone had asked me this and I had to think about my response. What I told them was that I decided to have the surgery when I realized I no longer had any choice. The alternative would have been ending up in a wheelchair like my mom and/or taking increasingly heavy-duty meds which would have put me in La-La Land for the rest of my life. No thanks!

I am please you are doing so well.

BB

@Mikeb thanks, actually it was about four weeks before I started doing a little driving, the other times it was someone else driving, I am a horrible back seat driver though. Six weeks? Is that the law in NZ? Could get real tough for someone if they don't have help with things. I read your new thread in the pre-op section. Going in to make em a matching set? Good luck!!

@miaow27 , @fulafoto thanks, I was quite sore the next day. I just have to remember that my hip took quite a few years to get in the shape it was, and despite my wanting to do leaps and bounds, it just isn't going to happen all at once.

Otherwise I still am not walking long distances, but am doing a lot of shorter walking and moving around.
Right knee is still bothering me though. Pain area is right below the kneecap on top of the tibia? in front and to the outside, but sometimes moves to the inside or even a little bit down the center :chinstroke: I saw my GP for his followup, he reiterated the same thing my OS said. That it's probably going to take some time, that I'm walking different yada yada... LOL.
I'm still experiencing some soreness and pain on the top and outer side of my thigh. but I am elevating and icing as necessary. I'm tapering off the norco and am doing Josephines recommended tylenol regimen 4x1000mg's. I am still taking aspirin twice a day (per OS) for another week. Then I'll stop and add some Ibuprofren (again per Jo's cocktail instructions.)
I'm planning on going back to work May 27th (right after our Memorial Day here) and actually looking forward to it. That's when I run out of my vacation and sick time. GP filled out some papers saying I needed reduced hours for the first two weeks. Hopefully it isn't too difficult now that I no longer do the heavy physical work I used to.
Sorry for the long winded post. But had a lot to say.

Sounds like your getting it all together Joe - well done and what you said is so right
I just have to remember that my hip took quite a few years to get in the shape it was, and despite my wanting to do leaps and bounds, it just isn't going to happen all at once.
That really hit home with me and is something I will have to remember when my turn comes

It will be good to return to work if your up to it - makes you feel more productive and more motivated I reckon.

Well done mate and hope you continue to improve at the rate you have been :yes!:

Well done Joel, yes I was the same with my first hip couldn't wait to get back to work. I am quiet lucky with my job, I have a lot of sick leave so 6 weeks is no problem. Over here they wouldn't let you back to work at all till you get the OK from your surgeon.

@fulafoto Patience was one of the hardest things I had to learn. I wanted to be all better -- NOW! It doesn't work like that, unfortunately; but if you rest and are patient and don't overdo, you'll be fine. I overdid it at one point after my second hip and ended up with piriformis syndrome and some sciatica (no fun at all) and this kept me down longer than if I had just been patient and let the healing continue. I decided the world would end if I didn't get up and do some laundry, and that cost me another month or recuperation. DUMB! But I'm doing fine now. Lesson learned!

Peace and love to you.

Joe, short walks are better than one long walk...as I have found out...
And even two walks are not as good as many smaller ones.
Learn by doing!

So why is it that a number of short walks is indeed better I wonder? I know it is, but why?

Is it the recovery time in between? Especially if elevating and icing?

This was true for me as well -- short walks and more of them, than one long walk. I dunno, maybe shorter walks aggravate the joint (and stamina) less?

It's been awhile since I updated my thread but things are going along fairly smooth. Did two reduced weeks at work, my first full week started Monday. Still icing and elevating when necessary. I can tie my boots!!! and do my socks, even if I look silly at it. Still using the cane a bit especially for any long walk, or at work on jobsites, (I do construction inspections) but in the office and around the house and any smaller errand I am aid free! My knee issues seem to have mostly cleared up. Just like the O.S. and the G.P. said they would (how about that). I can do stairs also! I still have some pain on occasion on outer thigh and take Tylenol and Ibuprofren as necessary. Otherwise looking forward to be able to do more. A world of difference in just a couple of months.

. @JoeL The outer thigh is where i feel most of my (I wouldn't call it pain) maybe little discomfort when i walk without my crutch or cane...My home pt. tells me my muscle is not quite strong enough, but it will be. So be patient. I will get braver about my cane. My biggest fear is falling and dislocating..ugh :(. Going to do lunch on Friday with a friend and go out with my cane. Plus I have Red Sox game that I have tix for on Sat...better to use cane I am thinkin.....Keep on Keeping on....and just remember. Slow and steady :) Sue

Joe, you are doing just great!
How awesome you are getting on with the business of your life.
Glad your knees settled down as they said they would.
Congrats on the stairs! I still dislike going down stairs. Grrrr.
Keep us posted as you continue; onward and upward!
:loveshwr:

Just had my 12 week checkup. So far so good. O.S. gave me the images, the before and the new improved.
