I just did a Google search for "getting medical records in UK" and it looks like you have something called the data protection law and are entitled to your medical records with definite rules that they have to meet.

Go for it Natalie. Don't let them do this to you. Total nonsense that they are doing this. You should call them on this. Know it's difficult to manage this with all the stress with family and pain but hopefully you can do the same search that I just did.

We're all here for you

Hi Rose

Thanks so much for caring I'm not really sure I understand either I think they are just making excuses for not sending them out I have paid £32 plus postage and they've assured me the scans and x rays on a disc will be in the post this week.
The reason they are having a meeting is because after seeing the registrar at the last appointment he didn't have a complete report for the MRI so requested I see the surgeon when the report was complete so I made an appointment but he is away for a few weeks so I tried to get to see someone else to give me results but this wasn't possible I did put my foot down at the hospital and said it really wasn't on and this resulted in them calling a meeting for 22nd October.

Xx

Natalie,
Sorry for my confusion, just reallt got lost in the shuffle. The most important thing now is to just get those scans and reports in your hands and get them off to Dr. Maale, he really won't need the report on the MRI, he should and most probably will read it himself. So hears hoping they get to you ASAP, and progress can be made.

Thanks Merry
Yes I read that today they've assured me I will get the scans ASAP and the notes after the meeting. If I get the scan emailed to Dr Maale as soon as I receive it with a little help from you guys if that's ok.Im in a very bad place the pain is getting worse and the meds haven't made a difference I'm afraid I feel dreadful from so little sleep and the pain is all over my leg,Im going to try and get referred for chronic pain injections.I've tried to ease things with my daughter so hopefully things will calm down.

It's ok Rose I'm confused by it all I will ring every day to see if its been posted because it wouldn't have hurt them to ring me and tell me why they had been delayed so I don't think they will mind a push in the right direction.
The worst thing about all this chasing is that every time I ring so done I get over emotional and nearly cry :( Fingers crossed now xx

Nearly cry? My gosh lady how can you not. Natalie...you don't have to wait. They make copies. And I'f you cry..that's fine. Maybe that's what they need. When I googled and saw the law...I said to myself whew! Great...she can get them. Call or have husband call and read them the riot act and quote the law..I know we are pressing you when you are so very ill. I am sorry. I know if we lived there we would be in their face with you at our side.

I imagine that you just have no energy to fight. We understand but know that we are just trying to help. I think at times like this, our body just cannot do more than what is essential and we all know how essential this is..please know that we are in your corner.

We are worried about you emotionally and physically.

Thankyou Merry xxxxx

It means so much that you are all here for me :) I do feel so annoyed that I'm having to chase everything up and every phone call I make I feel like I'm getting fobbed off by the person on the other end of the phone I'm sick of it :(

Step 1. You HAVE to be more than annoyed. There are really times Nat, when it is very appropriate to be angry, furious...etc. gotta let yourself go if you can muster up the energy and tell them off..obviously nice doesn't work here.

Natalie,
In my opinion, and it is just my opinion, these people don;t now how to help you, they see that you want to go elsewhere to get help, and are trying to delay or whatever that happening. You just have to get really tough with them and not be worried about how they will feel about. You have every right to do what you need to do for yourself and they should not be standing in the way. You need to let them know you see what is going on and you won't stand for it anymore.

I just don't get your hospital and their records keeping system.
One thing I don't understand is that someone told you there was nothing more they could do and now the Dr. is using your records at a meeting (What for?).
In my opinion, and it is just my opinion, these people don;t now how to help you, they see that you want to go elsewhere to get help, and are trying to delay or whatever that happening. ....they should not be standing in the way
You have to understand, this is not deliberate on anybody's part, it's just the bureaucracy. Such a case as Natalie's is unusual so it's perfectly natural they should want to use her notes for teaching purposes. It's how we get our new generations of orthopaedic surgeons. Much the same must happen in the US too. Nobody's standing in her way, it's just different departments getting involved and muddling things up.

For instance, the note saying her notes mustn't leave the department because they are wanted for a clinical meeting is to do with the doctor teaching. An unfortunate clash. But the secretaries who are responsible for releasing the notes to the patient are bound by it and there's not a lot they can do as notes certainly do have a habit of going missing from time to time.

I'm sure the medical staff are at a loss, but because they haven't initiated involving a doctor from abroad, again, their hands are tied as it's rather outside the usual protocols. Obviously they never came up against a BoneSmartie before! Not really their fault and certainly not Natalie's either, of course.

But how to unplug the system is the point. The only person that can do that is Martyn Porter, the surgeon. Is it he who is out of the country, Natalie?

The usual protocol for getting one's notes and/or xrays is for the patient to fill in a request form which is then sent to the consultant surgeon for his approval. Yes, we are entitled to our notes and xrays but the law indicates that they are as much the property of the author as the patient, so therefore, the author has to give permission for them to be released. Most often that's where the hold-up occurs as either the consent form is in the bottom of his in tray or he's been away, etc., etc.

In the final analysis, it isn't a terribly common in the UK for patients to request notes and xrays. I always request my xrays and scans as a matter of course, but I have to request them from the radiology department. I would imagine notes would be requested from Medical Records. Is that what you did, Natalie?

Josephine,
Thanks for the explanation, it just seems here in the US you can more easily get your information, and this has been so frustrating for Natalie. As I explained I was getting confused as to who she had to see, request, etc to actually get her information. Sorry if I infererd anything other than that, but from reading from here it looks like someone is stalling.

I've just read the latest in this thread. Imagine twenty of us behind you, cheering you on, as you keep fighting for what is yours. And cheering you on, again, as you battle your health demons. :console2:

Natalie, I haven't gone anywhere! I realize that you are under a lot of stress. Whatever they send you, we will help with, and we will help you in the next step if you need us! We are family!

Jo thankyou so much for explaining all that that's what I was trying to say but was getting it across as well.
Yes Mr Porter is out of the country until the 22nd October.
I did request the scans etc from Medical Records. They are helping as much as they can.

Sorry Ive been absent for a few days I'm having a rough time my knee keeps remaining locked for long periods of time today being the longest and its nearly been 24 hours it causes such a lot of pain on top of the pain I already have.As well this upping the Fentanyl has given me such terrible nausea and dizziness and I'm struggling to take the Oramorph for the breakthrough pain because it makes me feel sicker so I'm stuck in a bit of a rut at the moment and not really managing well.
Hope you're all doing ok and thankyou as always for your kindness and support :thankyou:

Well then, he'll be back next Monday so hopefully he will prioritise all this. I suggest you phone his sec on Tuesday and check on progress.

Yes I hope so Jo the case meeting I planned for Monday afternoon for them to discuss several patients including me.Ive told the registrar about Dr Maale an he said he was going to discuss it with Mr Porter.
