Hi Natalie, I am so glad you got to speak to someone and formulate a plan. Yes there are risks to everything. But at least you know have a way forward and the wait is not that long.

Thank you Jaycey I am totally exhausted and feel so overwhelmed by it all I cannot believe this disease is taking over my life again and I can't believe I am going back to theatre!
My mum has chosen this moment to tell me I am doing the wrong thing too and that I shouldn't let them touch me at all :rolleyespink:
 
Natalie,

At last, some answers! A hinged knee will have rods that go up into the femur and down into the tibia, but that is the knee I have been talking about! You will be amazed at the bend and the freedom you will feel. I know with your SC you will not be totally pain free, but you will have life again because that knee is so stable!:yahoo:
The rods aren't extremely long so don't worry about it!:wink1:
 
I thought It might be Sonja I was very confused!Is it a bigger operation do you know?
Any different recovery?

I forgot to say the doctor put me on Amitriptyline too for the nerve pain.
 
Dr. Maale said I would be in the hospital for about 4 days. the Infection specialist said 6-10. At any rate, it is about the same amount of time as my first one. I am so excited about having it done! My problem is, the dates were never changed as I thought they were going to be so now I am not sure it is going to be the 13th of April. But whenever it happens, everything will be great!:thumb:

Normal is not exactly how I would describe it but ok...:th_heehee:
He will have to do a lot of debriding of the area, and the top of the tibia is infected. Plus find all of the bone fragments that re floating around! But other than that it will be a "piece of cake!":wink1:

He told us to expect for me to be in surgery for at least 3 hours because it is a one stage revision. I am so glad that I will not have a spacer that I will have to endure for 4-6 weeks!:yahoo:
 
Natalie, you have been through so much, I can only imagine how this has completely knocked you for six! You poor sweet thing.

However, the thing she was talking about was a haematoma which is a clever way of saying 'a collection of blood'! They certainly can be painful and may even be a focus of infection.

She wasn't referring to a fusion but a special knee replacement that has been found to be especially useful in difficult situations like this. Though it is a hinge, it also rotates so you will have as much movement with it as with an ordinary knee.

The plan she has described sounds the right way to go. You need something done and that's a fact. Try not to be scared, they have obviously given this a lot of thought and wouldn't undertake anything with a cavalier approach.

So glad to hear help is on the way. I know you really don't want to go for another surgery but if it give you relief of any sorts that seems to be the way to go. It sounds like they were pretty thorough with their diagnosis and you are on the right path now, you never can tell until you try, just how much pain relief you will get, and face it they don't know either and have to cover themselves so I would think they would be a little to the overdo side in what they say.

Keep your chin up it is only for a little while longer. Also know we are always here for you anytime you need us.
 
Sorry you are having those "family" issues. I have been there and can only offer you a bit of sympathy.

Family members mean well but sometimes they forget that words said at the wrong time can hurt. Your Mum is just worried about you but probably not expressing this in a helpful way.

You know what's right Natalie! You need this op and a life with your own children. Just be firm and ask that your plans are supported.

Hope you can get some rest this weekend. A bit of sun (hopefully) and some time to mentally prepare for the next step.

Hi Natalie, what a day you had! I too will be having a hinged knee I think? Anyway I know what you mean with family but they mean well I suppose! I have my appointment on 2nd of May at wrightington, might bump into you! That would be good lol. Take care, love Dawn Xx

Sounds very similar to what I will need there will lots of the SC floating around in my knee too so if I have a revision he will need to try and get that out first.

But of there is infection that will need to be dealt with before anything.

Thank you so very much Jo xxx It certainly has knocked for six and I feel in shock today if I'm honest I really cannot believe I will be going through surgery again and maybe even a revision.This damn disease just doesn't know when to back off!!

I was very confused to how the haematoma happened?!And didn't realize that it could be a site for infection she didn't mention this but did seem very concerned that I may have an infection.

I think Mr Porter may have had a chat with her beforehand and the plan was mainly his idea as like I say she never even looked at my knee and just asked me what was going on and looked at the doctors report from Blackpool and the x rays and blood results.

Lets just pray that my surgery doesn't get cancelled!!!

Yes that was such a relief to have someone take my side and listen I was in there for 40 minutes.And the I was sent straight to pre op and for bloods and swabs.
They have referred me to Pain Management for when I go in for surgery.They gave me Amitriptyline for the nerve pain.
