TKR Injured Knee 3 Years Out

Readymade, I'm in New Zealand and here it seems that the surgeons and the PT's are all on the same page as Bonesmart when it comes to recovery.
I never had pain from therapy which consisted of massage and very gentle bending and straightening.

my surgery was on the 10th May, I was driving at 2 weeks and the only exercise I have done is walking and a few heel slides.
I have been working, I'm a beekeeper, for the past 6 weeks.
My knee is still sore if I push it too much and by the end of the day I find it hard to get my knee to bend enough to get up into the truck but generally I'm very happy with how it's progressed and I have none of the constant pain I had before my surgery.

Frazz, hello! In the respect of therapy you are light years ahead of the dumb no pain no gain method still used here in the US! I envy you.

Many surgeons are less hung up with the numbers than PTs are. I remember getting the old "you might need an mua" from a PT but when I saw the doc he didn't even look at the PT report. He just had me bend and straighten my leg and said I was doing fine.

I got my staples out today! What a relief. Also went to a PT place with wary inclinations. The therapist got an earful from me regarding the sub part home PT visits I received from those bozos. I laid down the caveat that this had better be gentle and I mean really gentle to my benefit or no go. She seemed fine with that, and lead me through a few standard excercises. But in the end she was rather atwit regarding my rom ( man are these people possessed or what) I pretended to somewhat care, listened to the work the scar tissue info (for the 30th or so time) and wondered what was next. A small bit of time on a recumbent step thing set at super light pull or whatever wasn't too bad but I barely did anything. Good. Finally I was covered knee to thigh with 2 awesome ice packs that were absolutely heavenly , That was a real plus. I'm scheduled to go again on Thursday. Fine, but I'll still have my guard up! Your opinions on this would be most welcome!

I completely agree with @jmdearras. Just using your knee in daily life is enough. I'm one of those that never has had pt for my 11 knee surgeries. And I am doing really well!

For the most part I also feel that PT is a waste of time. On the other hand, I enjoyed going to PT because it was something different and it was nice to get out of the house. My PT was gentle and most of the exercises I did had little to do with my knee. Some of the stretches felt really good.

My PT person is a middle aged gentleman who only touched me once- put his hand under my knee and asked me to press it down, I guess to test my extension. Otherwise, he just gives me the exercises. I only do the exercises when he is here, except for some heel slides, and he says I am progressing nicely. He is useful in that he is documenting my progress and he's nice and pleasant. :)

Hi readymade,

I have ibs too, so the OS gave me or should I say that I asked for Emtec wich is Tylenol with codeine and I took Laxaday every day and the combination was ok for me.

I am past one year and my rom is still improving doing just normal activities. If you read my thread you will see that I stopped Pt after reading all the information given on Bone Smart. Do not let anybody torturing your knee!!!

4 weeks out today. Still have loads of swelling. In fact it's worse today than ever! Is this normal to go from slight improvement back to awful swelling? I'm not really making much progress and the swelling at the back of the knee is worrisome.

Oh yeah. They don't call it a rollercoaster ride for nothing! Sometimes you can't even find a reason for it. Try not to worry, it's normal. Frustrating, but normal. Be sure and elevate and ice as much as possible. That will help to bring that swelling down. And don't do anything to anger your knee. Rest your newborn baby.

Thank you. What a learning process this is!. I don't even know what I did differently to rile it up. On the other hand, incision is healing nicely.

Yes it's a rollercoaster ride but your knee is only one month old. Ice, elevate and make your knee a priority. He is the boss of you for the mement.

I don't think you have to do anything to rile it up. It just does it sometimes.

I do have another question, what is this thing/term PT's use about molding and stretching scar tissue? What does that mean? I was told that there's all manner of "crazy cross linked" and "wild" scar tissue forming that will take over and the knee will be stuck in a rictus like that permanently unless the scar tissue is elongated and molded to some standard as to conduct more ROM, even if there's still a lot of swelling.
