TKR Injured Knee 3 Years Out

Yeah. My mind said "yeah, right". I did not have home pt. Guess they thought I didn't need it. So my first pt session was 5 days after surgery at the office. He pushed and got the reading he wanted, and I decided to reread articles here. Then when I had bandaged removed, and she went to push, I told her I didn't want my knee pushed on. She backed off. I had office pt on a regular basis, but with the exception of massaging twice, they have not touched me. Measurements are done with me holding my knee where it is comfortable. I figure if I am the one "pushing", then I know when to stop. It's worked so far! I went down the school steps normally yesterday! No pain in knee. I may start using steps again for exercise. Going up gets me out of breath. Hope you are doing okay!

@readymade no apologies needed. Many of us, myself included are dealing with tummy issues from this adventure. I have never had any issues, before this, and it has been on of my main aggrivations. I had to ease off the percoset because of my stomach issues.

I have been alternating, maybe 1 percoset a day if I really need it, other wize managing on tylenol and tramadol.

May our healing continue.

I got threatened with a MUA within 24 hours of my revision surgery. I couldn't help but laugh at the PT in the hospital. It must have been the drugs.:heehee:

Try taking Ultram with a 1000 MG of Tylenol 3 to 4 times a day. That should help, with the pain. I also have IBS and it was definitely a fine balance of stool softeners anti nausea meds and antacids that got me through.

Indeed! Thank you Diane and newlybionic. The nausea or the pain? Sometimes it's a real balancing act ..

Has anyone here been prescribed Neurontin ? If so, does it make you feel sick? Does it work well for pain? Aka Gabapentin.

Made my husband hide things.... like a gift card in the coffee canister, then he reported it stolen! And dish towels in the freezer! Sons and I were on the floor laughing!

I never had the nausea, just the no appetite and the alternating bowel issues. I know quite a few were given gabapentin post surgery. My OS does not. I had to ask him for Robaxin, this week, to try and ease the muscle tightness, it seems to be helping some.

Have you been given anything for nausea from your OS? I needed that to take almost any pain medicine and even had to continue it for a few days afterwards. I used Zofran orally. There is also a patch that can be used. It is placed behind your knee and only needs to be changed every three days it is called scopalamine. I was given that during my surgery and while in the hospital I also use it because I have severe motion sickness.

@readymade I was given gabapentin after 4 weeks due to nerve pain. It made a big difference, reducing pain almost immediately.

I had the motion sickness patch in the hospital too. It worked well. ..most of the time. I did get sick anyway once! Thanks for the feedback on Gabapentin. I may just try it.

My OS gave me gabapentin to take for 1 month. I really can't say whether it helps because I've taken it from the beginning. I have noticed a few times when I had strange reactions in my legs, like a sudden startle. Gabapentin is supposed to work for restless legs.

readymade, you will find that most topics are not considered TMI here. You will find that others have similar problems and you may find help in dealing with them. Fortunately I did not have any issues with my pain meds other than slow bowels at times.

I was given Gabapentin at my 6 week check up for night time use. I think it helped with night time pain. The pharmacist said that it could cause drowsiness. I don't know if it did since I only took it at night before going to bed.

Yes, I think this is one place we can be completely honest about both our fears and our physical functions.

Boy it really makes my blood boil ( I'm a hot headed redhead.) that at early P/T visits patients are scared into the possibility of having to have a MUA. How defeated this makes a person who's doing there best on those early days just to comply and make their P/T appts, and at times being pushed to their physical limits that may take days to recover from, to be told your just not doing well enough. ( I remember, not that long ago, so it's still a very fresh memory of crying all the way home after being given the news, my ROM wasn't increasing fast enough.) At times like that it's not safe to even be out driving as my mind was so consumed with what had been said, the trip home became a blur. My feelings are it would be best to wait a good period of time before this subject is ever brought up and after much observation on their part, bringing up so early in the recovery period just seems wrong. If anything after reading so many postings of people having this mentioned to them so early in their recovery period, it just makes me want to dig my heels in even more and say.........I don't think so ( to a MUA)

@readymade
I have taken gabapentin/Neurontin in the past for anxiety, PTSD, and neuropathy in my left arm. It didn't really do much for any of my conditions. I was taking 2700 mg a day, which was the maximum, I believe. I had to stop taking it bc of side effects at that dosage (apraxia-like behavior, difficulty finding my words, and mild involuntary lip and mouth movements that occur at high doses). I do know many people who have had great success with it.

I had a person like that in the hospital with my first tkr. Turns out who I thought was a PT was only a PT *assistant* with delusions of grandeur. Luckily I had been on Bonesmart preop so knew this was nonsense scare talk on day 1 PT.

Yeah, there was a different PT person at my home every day, and they all had slightly different philosophies on how to rehab. I don't know how much they were qualified or not, as a couple of them were pretty goofy and fumbled around! The first guy was very much a no pain no gain type. This was on day 4 post op. He looked at my walker and blurted "Where's your cane? You need a cane!" Even though I was specifically sent home from the hospital with the walker and told to use it for a while. No communication between PT doofuses and hospital whatsoever !

I think I still hold the record for being threatened by a PT for a MUA. It was less than 24 hours after my revision surgery while still in the hospital! My reaction was :loll:

I'm so grateful my OS said he wanted my ROM to be 90 by 12 weeks. I was there by about 10 weeks, so I felt I was ahead! I never overdid exercise and my PT never pushed my knee to the point of pain. I wish more surgeons were like mine it would avoid so much stress.
