TKR I have a new knee!

Hi Debbie,
At my 1 week appointment I was so swollen with hard edema, my OS thought that i had clots. He did the ultra sound and no clots. He sent me home with instructions for ice, elevation and NOTHING else. It worked. Then I got a pretty bad UTI. All is well, now. I do still have to wear my ted, but it feels great! Take care. So glad we are friends!
 
Nyland, I had my knee replacement ladies mixed up (can you do that here) I was thinking it was you with the retaining fluids big time, like over 30 pounds, but if I remember right it was Sonja. Just wondering if she found anything out at the doctor. We all worry after we get our replacements that we might gain a few pounds because we aren't as active as we were, but those kinds of numbers are way too much to attribute to the occasional extra cookie or two. Need to hunt her down and find out. I am always afraid of the blasted UTI's too, two weeks before surgery I told my husband not to touch me because I was afraid of a UTI. Nothing like killing the mood when you tell ask your husband if he bleached himself....:loll:
 
Nyland you're certainly are coming along great! Congrats on getting all things done for work and now you can settle in and go slow!:thumb: Adding the stress of jobs to the mix of TKR and you really have an extra load on you head. I'm glad to see you are on top of it all and making it all work for you! Soon you'll be driving again and get back some more of your
independents!:yes!:

Pesky UTI/Kidney infection! My last dose of antibiotics was Sunday night. After 1 day on antibiotics the symptoms stopped. 2 days off of the antibiotics and the symptoms are RAGING! Came on fast after my PCP closed. Hopefully the doc on call will call in another dose of antibiotics. Why couldn't this have presented at 3 PM? :shrug:

Oh no Nyland, not another one. Were you on the antibiotic for 10 days? I know it is hard to stay on them when the symptoms go away right away. Like I posted a couple posts above, I use to get them all the time and finally blamed it on my husband...:wink:. Do you drink cranberry juice? I take the pills and that seemed to help a lot. I had to stop them 10 days before surgery and haven't gone back on yet. Do they attribute this UTI from your catheter? Hope you got your meds and feel better soon.
 
Oh Nyland, I so feel for you! :console2: Those darn UTI's are so hard to get rid of sometimes! Are you eating yogurt at all? Sometimes they say that helps when you're taking antibiotics when treating UTI's. I hope you get more meds before the long weekend! I hope you rid yourself of that pesky UTI soon! :friends:

I was on Cephalexin 3 times a day for 5 days. The bleeding stopped after the first day and the symptoms almost immediately. I have been off of it for 2 days, and out of the blue al of the syptoms came back right after office hours. I called my PCP's service and got so lucky. The medical doc that works for my surgeon, the SAME doc that did my pre-op exam, called me back. He put me on Sulfamethoxazole twice a day for 7 days. He wants me to have a urinalysis next week before I see my surgeon on 9/6.

I do believe that it it from the catheter. Here's why. From day one I felt nauseous. In the hospital, they gave me anti-nausea medicine in my iv every 4 hours. When I got home, I got sick every time I ate something. I told anyone that would listen that I had a queasy stomach. I presented with blood in my urine last Monday. 2 full days on the antibiotics and the symptoms were gone, the blood was gone, and it was the first time that I ate, enjoyed it, and didn't get sick. I guess I just thought that not feeling well was due to the surgery. I just didn't know, and accepted it as post surgery yuckies. If it hadn't gotten so bad that I had blod, I'd probablt still be thinking it was from the surgery.

I was eating yogurt to try to help with the nausea. After I read your great advice, I grabbed a yoplait light raspberry cheesecake yogurt. Oh my! It is delicious! My husband just got a fridge full of yogurt today. He gets it for our dog and always gets a few yummy ones for us. I know, my spoiled little poodle gets yogurt to settle his tummy every night before bed and every morning. :rotfl: He and I have had some good mommy and doggie bonding these past few weeks. He walks really slow when I take him for walks like he's taking care of me.

That's kool Nyland, you and your poodle are insinct when it comes to settling your tummys and having a caring hubby to stock up for the family, nice guy!:ok: Furry friends are sooo intuned to their owners need, it's amazing!:puppysmooze: Thank goodness you were able to get med before the long weekend!
 
Oh poor you Nyland. Hope you feel better soon. At least you are in good company, it keeps happening to the Duke of Edinburgh too.:)

It is pretty amazing how fast the symptoms subside once the antibiotic is taken. I have had 3 doses and feel just fine. This round is for 7 days. 3 days after the last day, I will have a urinalysis culture. Fingers crossed that will be the end of it. Thanks for your kind words, support, and friendship!
 
Oh boy Nyland, you have been put through the mill. Can't leave you along for five minutes, can I :heehee: But so very relieved to hear it was nothing serious and is being sorted. Bless you :flwrysmile:

Hi Kathy! Things are so fine now. I'm on this antibiotic for 7 days and have a urinalysis scheduled for 3 days after the last day of antibiotics. I have high hopes that this second round will do the trick. I feel like a new person this week....despite the recurring UTI. 5 weeks and things are so much better! I do still ice and elevate, but I feel like me. I can even sleep at night. It takes a bit to figure out what works for you personally, but once you do, it's great. I slept in the recliner for 3 weeks, though. The first 3 weeks are really tough. Week 4 gets better and it looks like week 5 and on are better. When you have a tough time, please remember that it gets better. I know how hard that is. I had a tough time even fathoming that it was going to get better and engaged in waaaaaaaaaaay too many pity parties. Those days are over. Take care, sweetheart, and keep in touch. I care!
 
YES, no more pity parties. Well maybe one or two but just focus on those positives. We are going to make it through this and will all be better people because of it.
 
I seem to be doing really well with the walking now, at least by my standards. I just went for a walk in the woods! Only a little way, but no walker, no stick and no crutches. I have even got my "stride" back, something I haven't experienced for the last eleven years.

Darn UTI!!!!!
8/20 - Raging symptoms. Positive urinalysis. 2 days on the keflex all symptoms stopped and no blood in urine. 7 days on felt great!
8/27 - done...symptoms reappear.
8/28 - Start Sulfamethoxazole - symptoms haven't subsided.
8/29 - Still no relief.
8/30 - nada!
8/31 - no relief
9/1 - Symptoms worse than ever. Back on keflex.
Another urinalysis next week.
My knee, however, is fine.
 
Holy man Nyland you're battling wars on all fronts you poor girl! I hope to god something kicks in soon to give you relief!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, there is nothing worse than a dang UTI!:console2: I so feel for you!

how is your recovery coming along? I had knee replacement Aug. 8, 2012. I am ok but get discouraged with range of motion. I do my exercise, but afraid that I will never be the same. Not sure if I am expecting too much too soon.
 
Thanks, Jacky. I truly appreciate your kindness! I just took the 1st dose of 500 mgs. I'm taking it 4 times a day for 5 days. 2000 mg a day should kill it, I think. I never had a UTI before.
