That's very typical of metallosis. Have you been able to get a date with a revision surgeon yet?

@Josephine I have not. I just saw my original OS on Monday. Who would I even see for such a thing? Another OS? Will they think it can be a metal problem if I do not have MOM? I do suspect I have some type of metal problem causing inflammation. :( Maybe the immunologist can help me with this? I know there are metal testing kits that you can order from various metal testing labs. I did request one from Chicago. It is sitting in my closet. I would welcome your thoughts.

He will look at your records and xrays and give you his opinion by phone or email if you can't travel to see him. I dio strongly recommend you contact him and ask.

@RestAssured Sonja will be able to advise you further. There are extreme specialists out there, they just may not be in your neighbourhood.

@Josephine Well metallosis was not really mentioned. I had not really thought about metallosis. I was thinking more metal allergy. I will look up Dr. Maale's info. Can you have metallosis with a metal/ceramic hip?

Dr. Maale just got through setting up an operation with a woman that has metal allergies. He looked at her symptoms, and the test for metal allergies and concluded that her body was definitely rejecting the knee. He is going to use the Smith and Nephew like I have, with titanium. It would certainly be worth your while to check him out! I will send you my last name in a PM. They laugh when they hear my name! I am out loving life and having the time of my life! I can kneel on the floor, go to a plank. Position, you name it! This knee is incredible!

Thank you Sonja. My allergist/immunologist emailed me today to let me know that he ordered the tests specific to my implant. He should get them in about 10 days. I was thinking I should probably do the ion testing too...just to check for everything. I keep hoping I am going to wake up and miraculously start to get better again instead of moving backwards.

In the meantime, be proactive, positive, and try to watch funny movies and read lighthearted fun stories! You will get better, it isn't a question of if, but when!

Three years total time, 1 year and 6 months after my revision, I am kneeling, walking fast around the gym, swimming, Zumba, yogalates, and found out today that I will be participating in a golf charity event! I don't golf, but it will be fun anyway, because I do know putt putt and I will be the fourth member of the "scramble!"

Metallosis is a term which includes many things. Generally it just means that the surrounding tissues are being badly affected by something arising from the presence of metal or metal ions.

And sometimes the surgeons might use a sleeve (in red circle) to make the ball fit properly on the taper of the stem. Corrosion can occur here between the sleeve and the taper which would have a negative impact on the tissues.

@Josephine I don't think I have a sleeve...just a cup, liner, ceramic head, and stem. But it would probably be prudent to check everything.

Are you sure? It's not something the surgeon would tend to mention. To them it's just an extra little something they do the get the job done. I've never yet met anyone who knew whether or not they had a sleeve. It's often the case with patellar buttons, people generally have no idea if they've had them or no.

Hi @Hibbe. My OS still was not that much help. He thinks the pain is from my low back. I have made an appointment with your OS, but I could not get in until March so I am just waiting.

Well I saw a new OS today. He thinks I may have psoas tendinitis and a misaligned cup which is causing hip instability and inflammation. He has ordered a ct scan and a psoas injection. I think he was more concerned about the clunking he could feel when he moved the joint around. In certain directions it does not move smoothly. :( He said if the cup is misaligned it would have to be addressed.

Then, get definitive information from the CT scan soon to be able to have the OS put the right plan together
for you.
