if the cup is misaligned does that mean further surgery? Keeping everything crossed for you...take care Chrissie xx

Unfortunately yes...but he does not want me to think about that yet. He has ordered CT scans with 3D imaging. Right away after hearing my symptoms he thought the cup was probably too far out and hitting the psoas. Then he felt the clunking (which is a newer/increased symptom when he moved my leg around. I am feeling pretty devastated right now even though I have known something was wrong. It really hits you when it is confirmed. My hip socket just feels raw inside. How is that possible when it is a fake joint? I don't know how else to explain it. Whenever I walk, bend down, sit, stand up, lift my leg, get in my car, pretty much whenever i move my leg it hurts.

@Josephine and @Orthodoc is it safe to have a psoas injection at 6 months out? His nurse said they would try to schedule the injection with the radiologist the same day as the scan. I still have another appointment scheduled with another specialist referred to me by my hand doctor in April. It has taken me months to get in to see these doctors. I scheduled them both back in late January.

Are you sure? It's not something the surgeon would tend to mention. To them it's just an extra little something they do the get the job done. I've never yet met anyone who knew whether or not they had a sleeve

Josephine~Somehow I just saw this. I am not sure how I missed it. I got the list of components from my hospital records and a sleeve was not listed. If my OS used a sleeve it would have to be listed wouldn't it?

Hi @calikat I haven't been on here much lately so I have just caught up with your thread and I want you to know that I am thinking about you.It seems we are in the same boat with the psoas tendinitis. Mine was diagnosed by ultrasound in January. My OS has told me that the X-rays show that I don't have an impingement but from what I have read a CT scan is the gold standard in diagnosis so I am so pleased that you are having one very soon with a cortisone injection.I am still waiting for an appointment for the injection and was told last week that the waiting time had gone up to 4 months which seems ridiculous as I only waited 3 months for the hip replacement ! I hope all goes well for you and look forward to hearing how you are doing very soon.

Any injection has a small amount of risk. However, they are generally safe. By six months, the hip should be well healed and a psoas injection should have only a very small chance of infection.

Orthodoc

Thank you @Orthodoc .

@Kim22 I have been a bit MIA too. I come and read, but I rarely post anymore. I am sorry that you have to wait so long for your injection. That must be frustrating. I find that ultracet helps a bit with the pain. It at least takes the edge off. I take celebrex daily also.

@calikat. Can so understand that you feel devastated....you went in for THR to get a better life...not for it to drag on like this has for you....my heart goes out to you...it seems to have taken so long for them to know what you already knew...that something was not right! You say it feels raw...even though it's a prosthesis....it's not the joint that's feels raw but the surrounding tissue I'm sure....agitated and inflamed. I do hope the 3D scans give them a positive diagnosis so they can get on with making it better for you. You are brave and strong.....I'm full of admiration for your strength and courage in all of this....stay strong...you will get this sorted and move on with your life. Thinking of you...waiting for some good news for you....love and hugs...Chrissie .....xxx. In the meantime sending you a little hope...x

Because there is still a LOT of soft tissues around the joint! It's those that are feeling raw, not the bone!
If my OS used a sleeve it would have to be listed wouldn't it?
Most certainly. So you mustn't have one then.

Thank you @Orthodoc .

I don't post much any more either as it will be one year on Tuesday since I had my THR and most of my hip buddies have moved on months ago and as @Hoppy Nanny says we have this surgery to get a better life and not for it to drag on so long so I know how you feel but hopefully we can support one another until we get sorted out and finally get our lives back which I am confident will happen.I have decided that I am not prepared to wait four months for the injection and will look into having it done privately.I am not sure about the logistics of this but I tend to find out.Take care.

Hi calikat, my fellow Sapphire! Been a while since I've checked in. Sorry to hear you're still dealing with the problems. It sounds like you are closer to some answers maybe.

Life goes on here on Colorado. Been through half a football season and two basketball seasons with my son since the THR on 9/17/12. Flag football starts up next week already! My 7 year old daughter will be playing this year ;-)

Please keep the faith as we are all pulling for you even if we don't get on here much, we're all thinking about you!

Keep us posted and hopefully it will be good news soon!

Well I do have some good news to report...finally. My original OS to his credit has said that he thought that a lot of my pain might be referred from my back. Yesterday afternoon I had a rhizotomy (the burning of nerves) on the right side of my back at levels L3/4, L4/5, and L5/S1. My pain has been greatly reduced! I took one NSAID last night and one ultracet mid morning today and that is it so far. I still have pain, but it is tolerable. It is making me now wonder if I should have even had the hip replacement since so much of my front leg pain seems like it must have been coming from my back. Unfortunately I still have the joint pain in my hip and the sensation of hitting/scraping against something whenever I lift my leg or externally rotate and of course the clunking so I will continue to pursue further testing. I wish that I would have had the rhizotomy before ever letting anyone touch my hip, but everyone (both hip and spine doctors) thought the pain was from my hip because L4 and L5 don't usually refer down the front of the leg. When the pain doctor was poking around in my back yesterday to find the pain generating spots before burning I could feel it kind of ache and burn down the front of my leg (I had the procedure under local so I was fully awake), and at another level I could feel it wrap through and around to the front of my hip. He did say that those were not normal pain patterns, but that everyone is wired a little differently. He did say that my L5 facet joint looked pretty ugly. I told him it felt pretty ugly too! LOL! So while I am happy...ecstatic actually...to have decreased my pain by 50% plus, I am somewhat dismayed that I may have followed the wrong path with regards to my hip especially now I am having complications with the replacement. It seems that the primary pain generator all along was my back and not my hip. Just an FYI for those of you who also have low back issues. Make SURE your back is not the primary culprit. I am starting to have the same type of symptoms on my left side, and you can be sure I will have a rhizotomy on the left before anyone ever touches my left hip.

On a positive...I can now more easily tolerate the pain in my hip socket area and my anxiety has decreased immensely so I feel emotionally much stronger. It is truly amazing what one day of minimal pain can do. Last night was probably the best nights sleep I have had in over two years, so I am sure that was a huge help too. I do feel a little fearful that the pain is going to come crashing back...that is why I did not post yesterday. I did not want to speak too soon although I was dying to share my happiness. But today I went to work, and the pain relief seems to be holding steady. The doctor told me if the rhizotomy works it could last up to a year, and then I could repeat the procedure. I am going to keep my fingers, toes and eyes crossed! LOL! Now that so much of the pain is gone I can see that I was really in so much agony. I hope, hope, hope, it does not come back for a while. I keep testing my back to be sure it is really gone. Big sighs of relief!!!!!

I also finally had the metal allergy testing the end of February 26th. I did not appear to be allergic to the metals, they did a skin test, but I was allergic to the adhesive....go figure! I have not done the ion testing yet. I suppose I should just to be sure. But with the new OS thinking it is an alignment problem, I may wait until after I have the CT scans and 3D imaging. I still need to get to the bottom of what is going on in my hip.

@calikat that is great news, I can tell you are flying high with excitement! I am so happy to read that you are getting some answers! And you got some much needed sleep!!
The rash was cause by the adhesive?
Super Happy Dance for you!!!! :happydance::dancy::egypdance:

That is really good news @calikat.I am so glad that the procedure has brought you so much pain relief and boy must it have felt good to have a really good nights sleep after so long.I am so happy for you.

The rash was cause by the adhesive?
I got a rash from the adhesive used with the metal discs they placed on my back. The cause of the rash/hives (cold urticaria) is still a mystery. Although it has abated as it has been quite warm in Southern Cal this past month. The allergist said it could be caused from the inflammation in my body caused by the hip implant or a myriad of other things. The concern is that symptoms started approximately 2 months after the hip implant and cold urticaria is an immune response to something in your body.

.I am so glad that the procedure has brought you so much pain relief
I am happy too. My leg is kind of achy tonight and my hip hurts inside. I know it is not really the joint but the surrounding tissue, but it really feels like the joint. The pain is not really palpable. I may have to break down and take an NSAID or something. But my pain level is still so much better than before I had the rhizotomy. I am glad I did it under a local so I could tell him when he hit the right spot. It was not the most comfortable thing I have ever experienced, but well worth it. Actually it was nothing compared to having a hip replacement.

Wow,

@calikat,

I am so glad that you have gotten relief! Being in constant pain takes a toll on the body! It sounds like you are starting to get some answers! I am happy for you!:happydance:

Good news indeed @ calikat ...a welcome relief from pain Is why we are all here!! Unfortunately differentiating pain in hip/ back areas is so difficult as it's all joined up!! So glad you've found something that works..,although I'm sure the surgeons wouldn't have done THR if X-rays didn't show a need for it! Let's hope all your problems start to settle Dow and you get get on with your life. Love Chrissie xxx

surgeons wouldn't have done THR if X-rays didn't show a need for it
The x-rays definitely showed a need for it. But that was not until after I had a hip arthroscopy in May. Arthroscopic surgery on a dysplastic hip can make it worse 50 % of the time according to the literature. I unfortunately was one of the unlucky 50%. But it is all water under the bridge now...so not much use in fretting.

On another note, I now realize why my back felt so much better. The doctor injected a steroid along with burning the nerves. I suspected because I started having the facial flushing today which seems to happen whenever I have steroid injections in my back or hip. I called the office to confirm and sure enough. His nurse told me he adds the medicine sometimes if the patient is in a lot of pain. So I guess I will have to wait until the steroid pain relief wears off to know if the rhizotomy truly worked. I hope, hope, hope it proves successful. I don't want to go back to that place. For now I will enjoy my reprieve from pain. I have not taken any type of pain medication so far today and I am at a steady 3 with my hip socket area being the worst. My hip does feel worse towards the end of the day.

REALLY struggled with the hip pain during the night. It woke me from a dead sleep and it was impossible to go back to sleep. I had to give in and finally take something for the pain. On the positive my back pain is still minimal since the shot/rhizotomy and my first OS cannot dismiss the fact that this pain is coming from my hip.

Just sending wishes that you will soon be ALL better. This has been so long and so hard.
