TKR Hopefaith's Ups and Downs of Recovery

@Betsy-Knees-6-2014 I used that CPM for a total of 2 times. I now find them a bit ridiculous. I need to look where you are in your recovery, don't see a date, but short walks( very short at first is what I did) to keep moving. The knee is in charge, so a temporary increase in ROM isn't going to change outcome. This is just MY opinion and my experience. Please take it with a grain of salt. When is or was your surgery? Hope you are doing well. :)

I'm still trying to get Dr's to give me a reasonable date. I want BTKR But I think the Drs here are whimps. They just want to do 1 and then 3 mons later the other. urgh. First BTKR date was Sept 30th, so I thought no way I'm not going that close to Christmas as I have a gift business online. So I thought I'll shop around and between getting a consult, talking to Office managers, Schedulers, etc... it has been hard. They all want to do one. So maybe I'll jump in and do one so I make some progress this summer.

I hope for the best in who you find. I looked in my area for a top rated OS. Then I interviewed them (there were several obviously). I had to feel personally comfortable with him and how he treated me. He absolutely will not do bilateral. ( but I am too much of a wimp and didn't want BTKR's anyway.). He had some real good reasons though.

Hopefaith,
Yes, dealing with chronic lifetime conditions is hard, but once you accept this is the way it is, it gets easier.
The worst one has been the OA in the knee, the pain has been so hard on me, and all of us I think, robs your life.
The other conditions can be managed and I can get on with life, as long as I take care of them.
I pray that someday OA can be treated as easily, so many lives would be improved.
I love Bonesmart, it empowers patients to take responsibility for their recovery, and have the best outcome.
I wish more conditions had support sites as informative and supportive as Bonesmart.

Hi @hopefaith - thought I would just pop in and see how you are doing today. Really hope that you have found a 'sweet spot' when you sleep ...... the trouble I have found, is that what works well one week, doesn't the next. Fume! I had a great run last week of sleeping on my tummy with my operated leg bent and the other straight - now that isn't so great and I am back to side-sleeping again. Before it was best on the non-op side, now it is better on the operated side - but I am glad to say that the sleeping positions are getting generally easier all round. It will come, @hopefaith, like all these things, it will come ....

I really hope that today is a better and brighter one for you. Here's a virtual bunch of flowers from me to you, to try and help make it so. XXX

@Pumpkln yes. I hear you. I am trying to come to terms with my fibromyalgia. It had been so "quiet" for so many years. Just a pop up here and there. Then the heart dx a year ago, which I still cry when I type here or talk about because I can't take the pharmaceuticals that I need for it. Acceptance takes awhile. I feel SO much better when I can MOVE. That is why I did this surgery, to be able to get my endorphins going and try to heal my heart some. Enough about me. This site is empowering. I am amazed in this day and age a site that moves this fast exists where people actually connect with the real things. (Maybe because a lot of us are sitting with our leg (s) elevated on our Piriformis). That joke may be one too many over, but I couldn't resist. :heehee:

My OS who is one of the top I my state doesn't do them either....won't lie, kinda jealous of the people who have had them though....

@dogwheels Breathtaking !!!
Will respond more later. I am actually going to TRY to go to church with my son and his fiancé this morning. With ice bag in hand. (This surgery kind of smashes any pride I previously pretended to have).

Hopefaith,
You are still early in recovery, when your knee is healed you will be able to get back to your exercises.
I take my ice pack with me too, it is black so I can be stealthy.:sneaker:

Haha I know what you mean about any sense of former pride going out the window with this surgery. Who would have ever thought that I would go to the store (or anywhere for that matter) wearing slippers and ill fitting sweat pants but that's what I did when I had to go out during those first several weeks. My 1st 'real' outing was a little past 6 weeks. I met my friends for a happy hour (no drinking for me). Sidled up to the bar on my crutches and plopped an empty ziplock baggie on the bar and requested that the bartender fill it with ice for me. :heehee: There I sat, at the bar with my friends, my crutches and my ziplock full of ice on my knee..... I hope you had a nice time at church this morning and remember that short trips are the key and then come straight home and rest. It's amazing how the simplest things will sap all your energy.

My OS says he has done BTKR's but has had to be pulled kicking and screaming into the OR to do them. He did tell me about an upcoming BTKR on a 73 yr old that he was going to do, but........while he was doing one knee his partner was simultaneously going to do the other.

@dogwheels have more time now. How very thoughtful you are! It completely brightened my day! Thank you X X X. Seriously the colors just took my breath away this morning when I opened my iPad!

So, I went to my church which has so many people it is insane. I took my crutch for, as @Tamsmom calls it, crowd control. People move away like they (or I) am going to ignite. So it works well. Truth be told and confession, I have done it, they move like that because they may arrive .5 seconds later, should they get stuck in the right lane (left for the UK)behind me.....:bored:

@DogLoverx3 funny you said that because we went out for brunch after and I have my ice bag and am pouring ice out of the drinking glass into my bag. VERY tacky, I get it. Chuckle about the slippers. Me too! Didn't even care. Amazing when you've experienced this type of trauma (and it IS), some things just DON'T matter anymore. And I am home again, leg up resting. You're right, short trips! @dogwheels I think organizing can be very therapeutic. I long for the day because I have found it so in my distant past.

Hey @hopefaith, well done on getting to church. I haven't been since before my first TKR in January! My friends there have been really kind though, both times they set a meal rota up for us and we had dinner delivered every day for 2 weeks both times. It was the most exciting part of the day wondering what we were going to get ;) Yesterday I went to a very British type of fundraiser that I thought you might like to hear about. A friend opened her house for tea & cakes (thankfully they had coffee!) she also had cakes to sell, plants, marmalade, books, cards and a few other goodies. She is taking the money raised out to Mozambique in August when she goes to volunteer in an orphanage for a couple of weeks run by Heidi Baker & Iris Ministries. Co-incidentally my youngest daughter volunteered there for 6 months a couple of years ago. Anyway, it was good to go to support my friend and meet up with others! Xx

@cafecortado I find that interesting on a couple of levels. I love the idea of opening one's home for tea and cakes. (coffee for you, tea for me) AND I know a couple who lived in Mozambique for about 10 years. They returned to the states for their children and education. So thank you for sharing that. I loved the discussion about cane vs. crutch and I have new inspiration to paint my crutch and put some of those blingly sticky things on it. Because I need it in public. I don't feel secure enough with balance to walk without it except in my house. So maybe I will extract some energy this week and do that. I have the paint. Actually Annie Sloan Chalk Paint that goes on anything. The blingy things would involve a trip to a craft store and I fear I would be sitting in a corner with ice to my knee stranded for a while. :heehee: I enjoy our "visits" Take good care Bernie.
