TKR Hopefaith's Ups and Downs of Recovery

So.....the energy drain is ongoing for quite awhile. (then why do some people get back on their pony in such a short time?) Rhetorical.

I woke up with a new pain under my knee cap, which is sharp at times. I feel so frustrated today. I ice and ice and ice and elevate diligently. What am I missing?

I see my OS (well maybe, I think he has gone into hiding since April 10th) or the NP,PA who I am not a fan of. My bend is not good. SO stiff in the past 9 days, and I think PT, even though she doesn't push, is doing me no good. Stopping seems like a bad idea too.
The assistant is starting to say things like "we've got to get some good blood flow to the area", etc. I am whining....I know. At least I can on here.

Thank you for your kindness in listening.

Hope, your elevating in bed while you sleep? Are you by chance sleeping on your side without a pillow between. Sounds like some pain I've had when I've screwed up in those areas. My knees trained me well through their diligent use of pain. I'm just the animal and they're cruel but just trainers. I hope these tiny bits of "wisdom" help you.

Hopefaith,
Your little run down the stairs is going to set you back somewhat. My guess is that is what is causing the knee cap pain, it got a real work out with those fast steps. Not only are you recovering from the TKR, you are now recovering from the quick trip down the stairs. When it all settles down, your bend will improve.
Like Jeff says your knee will let you know when you have pushed it too far.

@JustJeff I have not elevated the past two nights. I just wanted to SLEEP. But, I see once again the knee truly does rule, huh? I hadn't thought of that, so thank you. I am really taking it slow today. Ice feels SO good. It is wonderful that ice is always something that can be used and used. (:
@Pumpkln I agree. I think I have kind of been in denial about my unplanned charge down the stairs has been a hopefully short set back, but indeed a set back. Thank you for your kind reminder.
All, I really appreciate the responses when a day is tough. I hope I bring that to each of you when a day is a real challenge.

Yep, more healing now, then once you're caught up, slowly working your way into the world!

Hi @hopefaith, Nope still tired :tiredwheel:ffdddddd, but not as fatigued. It's okay, I will see my primary doctor on Friday. Maybe he can pluck out what may be the problem other than general old RA fatigue. And I am having difficulty with controlling the RA pain. Went to have my script filled as I can have it through my regular pharmacy 2X before I mail it off. Pharmacy did not have it, ordered it went back Friday and pharmacist realized she ordered the wrong dosage.... Too high... so they said they would reorder the correct dose and it should be here Tuesday. :sos: So I went back to the Butrans patch which I happened to be on before the Nucenta ER. Anyway things will work out soon. Thanks for the well wishes. Pain meds and ice help with the stiffness, along with movement/exercise if I am not in too much pain. I hope the rest of your weekend is good and that you too can rest and relax. Before I went back to work, I would eat, go to PT, and then nap , take my pain meds, :sleep:sleep. So I got plenty of rest :sleep:before going back to work :alarm:. I don't know about decreasing the pain med. You are only about a month into recovery. I am one for taking the pain meds for certain.

I can't do the step down med.s for many reasons. Some talk of Tramadol. It has a norepinephrine component that I cannot do. These meds are frustrating, aren't they. And you having to wait because they got the wrong dosage . Oh my that is awful @chestnc. I have many med. issues. I have to get work soon after this divorce to have insurance. It is so scary.

Hopefaith,
Frustrating when you have to work around so many medications.
Good luck finding insurance, at least with the exchanges you know you can find something. I know there are provisions where you can stay on your ex's insurance for awhile. See a health insurance agent, ask around for recommendations, a good one is a lifesaver.

@busylizzie thank you for that link. I just read that....very interesting. It makes me think about why PT has been so not helpful. I did not get connected with my GP before this. I need to. I'm just a nervous Nellie about everything right now. And am exhausted! I hope you get some good rest.

Hi @hopefaith, it's 1:15am here but I just wanted to say hi as I haven't been around for a couple of days. I'm just trying to catch up on everyone's thread! Ok so I'd better try and get some sleep. Take care speak later Bernie x

I had my 6 week post op. appt. I will not give numbers because I find the obsession with this ROM to be ridiculous, BUT I do want to brag about the fact that I really have gone by the B.S. regimen/Mantras meaning, I have decreased my exercises to a minimum, I have iced like a banshee, I have elevated as much. I have taken my meds by the clock. I have had several arguments with PA's, PT's and a few others. I have treated my knee like the biggest baby around (and I had two many years ago). Doing all of that, when I saw my OS (and I actually saw MY OS) he gave me an excellent report and said I was progressing very well. (He also mentioned that ice is my best friend....imagine THAT) I wanted to dance (but not yet) out of there. I was so happy to see that going by my gut, which is what I found here, is the way to heal my knee. (He also said that I could have injured ligaments in my stumble down the stairs, but the x-rays looked perfect.....for this I thank above, very much.)

Wonderful report! What a difference a few weeks makes! I'm do glad you (and myself, of course) found Bonesmart!

@JustJeff thank you so much. I have a long way to go, but his assessment was SO encouraging!
@Pumpkln I know! (Someone was looking out for me). Btw WHERE do you find those so very cute emoticons?

Hopefaith,
I can only use the emoticons from the web version. I am on my laptop right now, there is a little smiley face just above this area, click on it and you will find a large selection of emoticons.:rotfl::cool::idea::tantrum2::flabber::shocked::sleep::swoon::froggies::goodpost::treadmill::type:, one from each category, there are many more!
Hope that helps,

Sounds like you both are pleased with your progress....my OS never measured anything, just said...go out and live your life! I am also glad x-rays looked good, no MRI scheduled? If you don't improve I think MRI 's show ligaments. I think I have a torn one in my " good" knee but haven't had a MRI so who knows?

Atleast the weather has improved! One of these days I might shock my dog and rake her for a walk.
