THR Hitch & Get Along<

Post Op yesterday went well. Hipster was actually BEAMING as he came in. The Xrays look great (they used a smaller implant this time around so no breaks or cracks). We are now scheduling the removal of the cerclage claw and wire, shooting for December 14th. Orders for now from the Hipster are to walk, walk and walk some more (ZERO mention of PT)!!!!!!!!!

I walked around this morning and did some things in the house, I walked some laps in the garage with the walker (not leaning on it but using it for assistance) and am now back on ice. Thanksgiving prep is starting today and I will do some more tomorrow (a little here, a little there). All will be nice and easy.

Read a thread @BionicButt that had me in a full blown crying situation - her story with THR's is mine (other than a few minor details). I can't even tell you what a sense of relief I am having as I sit here on ice. I'm maybe NOT SO CRAZY after all . . . this left hip really doesn't want to pull it's weight -- for a reason!!!!

Three and 1/2 weeks and I MAY be well on my way back to being me again!:fingersx::praying:

:flwrysmile::happydance::flwrysmile:

Glad to hear they are getting this show on the road.
BoneSmart members stories are definitely the secret of our sauce!

Hope today is a good day @NanaKP :SUNsmile:

Happy Thanksgiving friend.
Hope springs eternal...and I am hoping you get sorted very soon!:friends:

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving day yesterday. Ours was very nice - both of our daughters were here, 5 grandkids (age 6 & under) were here . . . lots of "rambunctious-ness" going (& we loved it). I was up early with my husband getting the rolls ready (they require 6+ hours to rise), my husband was really thinking though and after covering the pans with seran wrap and tea towels, he put my electric blanket on them to give them an extra boost so lo and behold, the "big buns" were ready for the oven earlier than expected! Go Jon!!!! I made the mashed potatoes, while he tended to both turkeys, and helped get everything set up. I was able to sit at the table with everyone as we gave thanks and enjoyed our wonderful meal. There were several trips up and down the stairs for me but I did NOT help with the clean-up, instead I retired to the recliner with a large ice pack and took a little nap.

Today, I am quite wiped out. I had a rather restless night (some aches and pains). Today I have a rather deep pain that radiates down the front of my right leg into my ankle. Feels like a strong "toothache" - for lack of a better description. I also noticed that my right hip is very sore to the touch, almost as if any nerve block has suddenly just worn completely off. It feels like a very deep, painful bruise all the way down the outside of my right leg to my knee. Just a sign of doing too much yesterday? I'm icing it but to be honest, having the ice pack even touch my hip hurts to where I can barely tolerate it.

I was able to nap this afternoon and kept my trips up/down the stairs to a minimum. I took Ibuprofen this morning and just now took a Tramadol (50 mg). I will probably head to bed soon and will take some magnesium when I get upstairs. Any suggestions for anything else I should do? I tend to chalk everything up as "par for the course" but that kind of thinking bit me the last time around so I'm trying to be more aware this time.

Thanks in advance - Sore Nana

Hi @NanaKP
Its great you were able to spend some family time with loved ones. Sorry you're hurting today.
At this early date, only 18 days post op, I'm assuming you overdid it. Possibly it was the combo of standing for longer stretches in the kitchen, in addition to the several trips up and down the stairs that you mentioned. I think ice and rest is your best bet. Give it the weekend and see if it eases.
Wishing you comfort and a peaceful weekend!
@NanaKP

Thank you @Layla - pretty sure it was a bit of the ODIC. I just was reading @jaydub63 and went back to her beginning - had to read several of the posts outloud to my husband because he was wondering what I was laughing about . . . quite comical there with the trading back and forth of posts. My husband says "yep, you can tell that was mostly women posting with the change of topics so quickly". (That's a compliement to our quick minds!)

Will see how I feel tomorrow - I'm sure it will be better. I may or may not have done a few little dance "moves" this afternoon because I was happy that a new Hallmark movie was coming on (my husband had left to run an errand). It's the little things that make me happy right now but I do have to remember I'm in early stages with old 'righty'.

Hipster and I shared some "happy thanksgiving" day texts yesterday. It's nice that I can do that but I look forward to the day of not seeing him so often. LOL

p.s. @jaydub63 - can't remember who suggested the year subscription to the men's sock and underwear websites but my husband is STILL laughing. I'll have to return to that part of the thread tomorrow so I can see who posted it. :rotfl:

Hi @NanaKP,
Sounds like you had a lovely day with family! My Mum was American, and we celebrated US Thanksgiving when she was alive. Now that I live Canada I celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving! I don't think it matters when one gives thanks and gathers with family and friends, as long as we gather and thank :-)

I'm sorry you are sore, and it is always such a worry, but I'm sure dialling back today, elevating and icing has really helped, and it was only a quick Thanksgiving greeting with the doorman at the ODIC that occurred.
Wishing you comfort for the rest of the holiday weekend :flwrysmile:

@NanaKP I'm pretty sure the suggester of the underwear subscription was @danabanana, who isn't on BS much these days, but is a very funny lady. Glad my thread provided some laughs - and inspiration to return to running. I honestly thought I wouldn't be able to do it again (and had made peace with that) so I was pleasantly surprised that my OS was supportive. It sounds like you still have some healing to do from your 2nd hip, but you'll get there! I hope your ODIC recovery continues to go well today.

By the time we have the replacements done, so much is out of whack with overcompensating. I’m impressed at the amount of stairs you’re navigating. I try to avoid stairs at any cost, so I know when I have this second hip done in 10days, my muscle tone and strength will be zero, and it will take time and effort to get back. I’ll have to remind myself not to try it all in one day! I hope your visit with the doctor went well!

Oh @NanaKP Why must our hips suffer "hangovers" after overindulging. I'm hoping the recliner and ice gave you some relief.

Good morning! Happy 3 weeks to that shiny new hip of yours! I hope right has quieted down and is feeling good. :loveshwr:

Hello @SwampHiker - Happy 3 week birthay to your new "sidekick". I hope this week brings us both progress going forward at a steady pace without hiccups. I am actually going to return to work today, my husband will be coming to get me as he is insistent I shouldn't be driving yet (with my first hip, I was driving at this point but then again it was my Left hip/leg). I'll try to be a little more patient with this "being still" and recovering but I do need to get caught up at our business so that I can be ok to take off for the final surgery 12/14.

I am quite sore this morning in both hips. I am thinking that yesterday's trips to the train store and then later the grocery store worked those muscles that have been sleeping. I managed to leave my crutch in the car when we went to the grocery store and used the cart for balance and support when I needed it. The in/out of the car is a challenge as my right side is incredibly sensitive to the touch. I am pretty sure all nerve block, medications have worn off 100% as I have zero numbness on that side and so much as a brush of my hand can bring me up on my toes. (I still have some areas of numbness on my left side).

All that being said, have a great Monday everyone - stay safe out there. I'm thinking about all of my family in northern IL trying to dig themselves out from yesterday's blizzard. So very glad we no longer live in that climate!

NanaKP (Kim)

Good luck today with going to work! I'm sure your mind will appreciate it, hopefully your hips will be cooperative and understanding :egypdance:

You have been up and at em! I hoping that jolt your getting from just a touch goes away soon.

I hope today is awesome!

Tuesday greetings!!! I'm now 3 weeks, 1 day post-op and have a question. How long did you wait before you other anterior right leg hippies drove???? My husband says NO, I say YES. I haven't taken any pain meds (other than Ibuprofen) for the last 48 hours. He's afraid that if I have to make a quick stop, I won't be able to. I am back at work (2nd day) and have now been here for 4 hours. Yesterday I stayed 6 hours and it was wayyyyy too long. I was so sore by the time I got home. My car is here (my husband kidnapped it the day before surgery and left it here at our garage) so I am wanting to drive it home.

We do live in metro Denver so yes, the volume of traffic is also something to consider (9 miles) - 3 lanes each way all the way until our neighborhood but this time of day, it's pretty congested so one can't get to the speed limit.

Thoughts?

I experienced posterior approach, not anterior, but it was my right leg.
Consider calling the office of your OS, I think they'd get back to you re: driving pretty quickly.
I'm sure you recall that the main concerns are that you're off the heavy narcotics and that you're comfortable hitting the brake. Many practice somewhere first (I did also) your neighborhood if it has light traffic, or have hubby take you to a nearby empty parking lot. I'll bet you'd be fine to drive :driver:
@NanaKP

Thank you @Layla - I messaged Hipster's office and he said if I can walk without any assisted devices, I can drive. Well, it's not pretty but I can do it (still have a limp in my gait). When my husband comes to get me today for work (it was dark by the time I heard back from OS last night and I don't nighttime drive so I rode home with hubby), I will drive back to our business. He's pretty determined that I'm not ready but I know it's also a strain on him (heck the last almost 7 months now I have been heavily dependent on him). He never complains but I would really like to be more self-sufficient for a couple of weeks before I go back in on 12/14. I have no idea what the recovery from that surgery will be like - the fracture of the GT remains largely not joined (can't remember the words they used in the CT report) but it's 25% healed. My OS seems to think it's fine but seriously, I am so wary after all of these months of feeling like I'm behind the 8 ball. Ugh. Really trying to shake off the clouds of doom and gloom but they seemed to approach during the night and have settled over me. Hrrrrrrummmppfff.
:blackcloud:

Grrrrr, I hate having down days. Need to shake it off - time to turn on some music (or Hallmark) and try to shake it off!!!

Hi NanaKP,
I drove at a little over three weeks and found it fine. We're all different though.
If you're not trying it already, try heel-toe walking for the limp. Dedicate some time to practicing it, even if it's just around the house. You need to find a rhythm with it because it feels unnatural after the sloppy gaits we establish while our hips deteriorate. I have to remind myself, still, at 17 mo post op. Hardhead that I am! It makes you feel more in control and I feel as though I'm walking taller, less sloppy looking.

Everything always feels worse, at night, alone in the dark with your thoughts and no distractions. You're going to have to trust your surgeon and leave it in God's hands. It sounds as though you have a very devoted and loving husband. You're blessed. I think you'll do just fine, after all....why not? Your surgeon has the confidence and God is bigger than any little old crack in your leg bone. Pray to that end. I'll join you, I promise :prayer:
I hope the cloud lifts and your day becomes brighter.
Sending a warm hug your way :console2:
@NanaKP

Oh dear @NanaKP You have been such a trooper through this epic arduous journey. I'm sorry the storm clouds moved in last night and are lingering. Sending happy thoughts and inner peace your way. I hope you can shake those feelings soon.

Hugs,
Patty

@SwampHiker - Hahahahahahahaha, thank you - I'm cracking up!!!! I managed to get the hubs to drive my car home to get me and then I "hopped" (well that may be a bit of an exaggeration) into the driver's seat and drove us to work. He thought I did well enough that I am granted driving privileges now. Managed to get myself back home safely and the storm clouds have lifted. What a difference one more step of freedom can make.

Now I'm going to attempt to get my sewing room into some type of order to see if I can knock a few projects out before Christmas rolls around. I have missed it sooooo much although I'm sure my husband will miss watching Hallmark movies with me all evening long if I am camped out in my "dungeon" as he calls it, NOT. He will probably be sweet enough to say he misses me sitting next to him watching those sappy movies but secretly he will be thrilled to have the family room TV back to watch his own favorites.

I have 16 WHOLE days to see what I can accomplish before I go back to "la-la" land for however long that recovery takes! Ready or not sewing room . . . here I come!!!

:dancy::egypdance::happydance::curtsey:

@NanaKP I'm glad it made you laugh and you're feeling less like a grumpalumpagus. I'm also really glad you gained some more freedom and independence. :) I think it's good to fly the coop for a little while before you have to come back and sit on the eggs until they hatch.

Your hubby sounds so sweet and supportive. You are blessed to have him (although I'm sure at times you want to whack him with a cane so you can do what you want). Sorry, that was so very innapropriate. We can pretend I didn't say that.

I hope you get some of those projects knocked out before you once again resume the position of binge watching Hallmark movies.

Here's to productivity in the sewing room :cheers:
