Well, today's my 50th birthday. That's something.
I thought I'd update.
I'm 2 days shy of 7 months post-op.
At this point, I do what I want, when I want. I don't quite have the strength to stand from a squat (almost...very very close) or to take really large steps up (like when hiking, there's a large rock or something and I need to put one foot WAY up like on a giant stairway). I still have bigger-than-my-hand sized numb spots around and below the incision.
BUT..
I have hiked multiple over-5-mile hikes (Iron Mountain in San Diego was fun) with ZERO consideration for the hips. No pain. Nothing. I also climb under the car and back out to work on it (like a hundred freaking times doing one pain-in-the-butt (literally, but normal, not hip) starter change), walk when and where I want (like 15 miles on one amazing day at Disneyland), even the occasional 25-step jog to or from the car or whatever (I do NOT run. This is by choice. I think I could, but I don't see a point in the potential damage to the new parts). I'd like to say I'm about 98% 'back'. Yay!
My surgery and recovery were (and still are) right on schedule and I'm ridiculously happy with the decision. I cannot imagine where I'd be if I'd kept deteriorating and not done anything about the hip pain. I would definitely be just sitting if not wheelchair bound. As it is, I'm planning a trip to do the Teton Crest Trail next summer. Training will begin shortly.
I gained an amazing amount of weight in the last 7 months. Like 40+ pounds. Holy ****. I've weighed quite a bit more, but not in years. My quest for losing that weight has begun, nut not in earnest and I will be kicking that process into gear starting NOW.
I understand that the weight is the cause of a lot of my troubles and losing it will help in all aspects of my health and my abilities. I just need some motivation to DO IT.
If there are hippies out there wondering whether they need new hips and when to do it...DO IT.
HEART ABLATION: You may have read of my recent Cardiac Ablation. It was not 100% successful, and at this point, the heartbeat is slightly irregular, but no Fibrillation as of yet so that's good. I'll see my cardiologist in 2 weeks as a follow-up. Not sure what the next step is to get that rhythm back to perfect (or even if that's possible) but I'm not slowed down by the way it is at the moment, so that's good.
OK, so that's my report. I hope all my BTHR (and THR) peeps are doing well and feel as successful as I do.
Get out there and move!
