Hip surgery in my future

I wasn't trying to hateful. Really I wasn't. I just didn't feel like my feelings were being taken seriously. Being positive is easier said than done. At least in some situations. I do want information. That was the whole point of joining this group.

We understand your feelings. We've all been there to varying degrees. We're trying to keep it positive
to help you through. Trust us from experience....we make this out to be way worse (in our minds) than it is in reality.

You may feel better once you walk through some of your fears with your OS. He may dispel some of the pre-conceived notions you have and that's what we're trying to do. We're not trying to argue your every point but as you've already learned some of your concerns may be invalid. We understand this is a scary and frustrating time. The lead up to surgery is the worst. Many have admitted that afterward. But....you can do this. We all did and are still here to talk about it.

Being positive isn't always easy but the you more you try, the easier it will become.
Consider supporting someone else on the forum while you're still struggling. It may lift your spirits to offer some cheer and encouragement to another. Try it, I think you'll like it.

We'll be here for you. We care. Go make today a good one!

Oh, I am NOT trying to tell you how to feel.
If truth be told, the dysplasia and OS was harder for me to wrap my head around than MS.
Be scared and annoyed. Feel what you do. Getting a new hip at this age sucks. I get it.

Perhaps knowing that even those of us who've dealt with joint replacement patients for years experienced varying levels of fear and anxiety when faced with our own surgery. When it's YOUR body, it makes a big difference! I found BoneSmart back in 2008 after my first TKR. By the time I had my second one in 2013, I was well-schooled in what to expect. Yet I still had apprehension going into it. It's really normal for everyone and by all means your feelings mean something. But in almost all cases the fears and concerns can be helped with some information and reassurance. That's what the folks here are trying to do for you -- tell their stories of having worries and coming out just fine on the other side. Believe me, we all know about being a bit worried before major surgery. The abnormal thing would be if you were not concerned. I know it may sound a bit hollow right now, but you'll understand better what we mean once you're on the other side of your surgery. Hang in there and know that your fellow BoneSmarties really do care about you and want to help you feel more at peace with your decision.

That's interesting. I just assumed a medical professional wouldn't worry. That makes me feel somewhat better. In my case I started out with no information at all.

I'm sure talking to the OS will be helpful. I will get some definite answers.

It's very disconcerting to think about having replacement.

You want to look at some whining...look at my recovery thread!
We are on your side...

I have a silly sense of humor. It's just been hidden of late.

I'm wondering, after the surgery, how much help will I need? I know I'll be able to take care of myself and won't be allowed to drive for awhile. I figure housework will be out of the question. Is there anything I'm missing or need to know?

Good Morning, Allena
You're usually released to drive after a few weeks, as long as you're off the heavy narcotics.
You'll need help with Compression socks if your OS requests them. If you can't find anyone to
stay with you, I'd advise trying to schedule someone to check in on you each day. That way if you need help with anything you could wait for that daily check in. It also wouldn't hurt to have it pre-arranged with someone reliable that you may need to call if you're truly in need of some help. Ideally, it would be best if you could find someone to stay with you for those first few days home.

Check out this article on Activity Progression for THR as a rough guideline of what you will most likely be capable of.

A great weekend to you!
@allena

Thanks for the information. I can probably get someone to check in on me but unless they sleep on the floor no-on can stay here. I wouldn't ask someone to do that.

I've heard compression socks are uncomfortable. That makes sense - they are tight.

Good morning to you too, Layla

Compression socks are no picnic....I can't lie. But they're not tortuous either.

They serve a purpose, so it's a small price to pay.

You may get lucky and have an OS who's more lenient with their use. Protocol runs the gamut from surgeon to surgeon with so many aspects of recovery. It will be interesting to hear what your OS favors in regard to restrictions, compression socks etc. Hopefully you luck out with "best case scenario" on all.

that's ok.no worries.I'll let you know.I'm hoping I won't need them,but it remains to be seen.

Be sure your OS knows you will be on your own during your recovery. You won't be able to put on compression socks on your own. Most surgeons allow you to ditch them if you are on your own and taking blood thinning medication.

I didn't know that. That would be awesome. I will tell him. It's high on my list of things to tell him.

I was alone after my two TKRs and as a result, the surgeon kept me in an extra night or two. They also made sure I had aids in the home and carers to come in and check on me though I had to pay for that privilege! But then, I am in the UK so things are a bit different here.

Home alone: Patients Living Alone Can Safely Recover at Home after TJA

Ive been told that medicare will cover home health aides. It's good to know that i can recover safely alone.I will have some help thankfully.

If you have a friend or neighbour who can check on you during the day for the first few days you should be fine. Having someone near when you are showering is a comfort. Then keep your cell phone near in case you need to be in contact.

I have a neighbor who could and some friends who could. My aunt said she could check in on me .
