TKR Had a difficult time, feeling better<

I love the feeling of sleeping with the ice machine on my knee. It's so soothing. As long as I have a fleece blanket covering me, I'm comfy and I wake up with a pain free knee. 5 months out and still love ice.
You know, I was the same way with both my knees. I iced for a very long time, especially when sleeping. i agree it was comforting and helped me rest. It's not the same for everyone, but when it works....it's the best!

Thanks @Majella my ROM is good now, bit it's taken 5 months to get there! I like the idea of the weights. I may try them.
How are you doing? You are one month behind me.

* My Rt TKR is doing better and I think I'm getting more ROM, but I haven't been measured since 4 weeks ago, still have a lot of stiffness and numbness.
Now my Lt. knee hurts most of the time, surgery for that is scheduled next month....then I'll be done I hope for a long time !! Thanks for asking.

@Majella How and when did you decide to have the second knee done? I've got my old knee bothering me more now than my other one.

Tonight's the big night, concert time!

I bought a new pair of sandals since it's very hot where we are singing and my feet were too hot in my Sketcheers Go Walks, which have been my very comfy shoes, purchased for my knee recovery. My old many pairs of sandals do not seem right any more and I've been afraid to wear sandals since surgery due to fear of falling, or slipping, or getting scraped and then an infection. But I'm ready now, and these are comfy, adjustable for swelling feet, and just right.
Of course my knee decided to be achy today...who knows why...it's hot and dry out today. I've spent the afternoon icing and elevating to give it as much TLC as I can. Knee, don't let me down! I'm hoping to stand as much as I can through the performance as it's easier to sing and get enough lung room.

But, hey, these are easy problems, right? A far cry from the early days.

My daughter and granddaughters are coming to the concert, too.

You'll be so concentrating on the singing that you won't even notice that new knee. Have a wonderful time and sleep well tonight.

Sing your heart and and come home and baby that knee and sleep like a baby!

Can't wait to hear about your concert. Wish we could have all been there to support you!
:yay: :happydance: :yes!:

Hi @mamazipp, I just read all of your recovery thread-I'm so glad you are doing much better- you have been through a lot! I wonder if it's because you had problems with your bones beyond osteoarthritis which made it even more difficult?

Back in the thread someone suggested getting measured for shoes. In Bellingham, there is a store in Fairhaven called Fairhaven runners. You can only buy running shoes there, but they do spend a lot of time making sure the shoe is good for you and they check out how you normally walk without shoes, too.

I am very impressed with your knee flexion-I hope I get there some day, your flexion is better than I thought a knee replacement knee was capable of!

I hope to have coffee with you some day here in Bellingham! Best wishes!

@mamazipp, forgot to mention we have the twin to your cat! He's 2 years old, face is exactly the same as yours!

Also, I see that you like netflix. I was looking for a "back ground" show I could watch while doing other things, and found a show called "Alone" (remembered it's on comcast, not netflix). Season 2 takes place on northern Vancouver Island. I would love to go camping, it's not going to happen this summer, so this was kind of like going "camping". It's a survivor show and it was fascinating. I think I could live off the land now (for a week maybe)-we have the same terrain and plants as Vancouver Island. It was fun to watch!

@Majella How and when did you decide to have the second knee done? I've got my old knee bothering me more tenow than my other one.

@newlybionic
Hi Marian,
Both my knees were bad (bone on bone) but for some reason the Rt. knee hurt way worse than the Lt.
so I decided to have the Rt. knee done first (March 23, 2016).
About 2 months ago, I could barely walk on my Lt. leg (severe knee pain) I wasn't ready for surgery so they did a cortisone injection and set up the Lt TKR for 3 months out, which I will be having Sept 19th .
My Lt. knee is now in pain again, I'm thinking the cortisone shot is starting to wear off ..... so I know it's time.
I'm "so apprehensive" about this upcoming surgery  (but that's another story).

Thanks to all of the well wishers re my concert. It went so well!!...:curtsey:

......I had such a good time and was able to stand through most of it. I only sat down for one section, to give myself a little rest. My knee behaved quite well. If anything, it preferred standing as there was so little leg room. A preview of what plane travel will feel like. My granddaughters seemed to be impressed, even though classical music isn't their "thing". I did ice it all night once I got home.
:ice:

Today having pain in my usual place, on my kneecap and above it, on the quad tendon. I've been icing much of the day. Also having some intense jolts of pain lasting a few secs but breath catching. Gotta say I'm so tired of this. My knee hurts EVERY time I initiate movement, and standing up/sitting down. Will it ever go away? It's been almost 6 months.

I finally made the appt to go to Seattle next week to see the OS.i hope he can shed some light on this.
I'll be taking the fast ferry from Victoria to Seattle, so not going thru Bellingham this time, @LaylaHips. My daughter has generously agreed to pick me up, I'll stay at her place and she'll drive me to the OS the next AM and back to the ferry.

@LaylaHips how sweet that you have Bella's "twin". Beautiful cats, right? I will have to investigate the runners store in Fairhaven when I get back to Bellingham. Sounds like a good one. There is a runners store in Victoria, but shoes, and everything else, are more expensive here. But then factoring the exchange rate for me.......it's an ongoing calculation. Of course we must definitely meet for coffee, as well. I didn't actually have any other problems before surgery other than the arthritis in the one knee. I did pre-op exercises faithfully and did not expect to have any post-op problems. Ha!

Hi, mamazipp, my focus for physical therapy for this knee was pain free sit to stand from a low seat and doing stairs normally.

My PT gave me two exercises to do at home. When I do them, I can tell they help.

The first is to stand in front of the sink with feet shoulder width apart and to grasp the edge of the sink with both hands. Then lower yourself, bending at the knees and waist as if you are going to sit in a chair. Go as low as you can comfortably go without causing pain, focusing on evenly distributing weight to both legs. When you have reached the lowest comfortable point, stand up, using you arms to pull yourself up as needed. PT recommendation is three sets of ten.

The other exercise he gave me to do is to lay on my back on the bed or other flat surface (I don't know about you, but I'm not getting on the floor yet). Pull your knees up with your feet flat on the bed. Then lift your rear end off the bed by tightening your core muscles as much as you comfortably can. Again, no pain. If you can only lift you rear a small amount, that's fine. It will get better and easier. The magic number is three sets of ten. Build to it if you can't do it all at once. I think these are called bridges. I'm not sure if I've described it correctly. Here's a link to an article for them.

Hi @PolarBear60
Thanks for this.
I have been given those also by my PT, but then I find that the first one, especially, causes irritation to that quad area. So then I stop doing them. Kind of a catch 22. Do they help you?

Great to hear that the concert went so well and that your granddaughters shared it with you. It will be a great memory to look back on.
It doesn't seem fair that the pain seems to go on and on for some of us recovering from this surgery. It wears you down mentally too. I think my knee is improving until I do some activity, then I'm in pain again and have to go back on the painkillers. I hope your OS can come up with something constructive when you see him next week. Let us know how it goes.
