Hi Josephine,

Yes I have read this info. You were kind enough to send it to me last week when I was struggling with insomnia and it helped very much. So last night when the insomnia recurred, I spent some time in the Game room and Social room as the article suggested.

I hope to get some shut eye tonight. I didn't fall asleep until 5 am and got up at 9 am. So hopefully I will crash soon. No more Tramadols for a while.

Sorry - hope you didn't mind me repeating myself! It's awfully difficult to remember where I spammed that info on the forum after a while! :th_heehee:

Not at all Josephine. I always appreciate hearing from you. That article about insomnia was very informative and it made a lot of sense. That's why now when I have a tough night and can't sleep, I don't worry about it as much as I used to. The insight has helped me cope and that's what it's all about. Thank You!!

Hi Everybody,

I have a question. I started walking in the park a few days ago. I don't go very far and I don't walk very fast. I'm intentionally taking it easy. But I've noticed that for the past day I have felt some uncomfortable sensations coming from my shin area. Before I started walking, I was not experiencing any shin pains. Also, I am walking in a pair of shoes that I had prior to my surgery. Could be that I just need a good new pair of sneakers. Is this shin splints??

I would appreciate any input you can offer. Thank you.

G'morning Everybody,

I am re-posting my question from last night because I still would appreciate some input regarding the pain I am having along the front of my operated leg. Here it is....and thanks again:)

Hi, Dori, I know where you're coming from. I found around 2 1/2 months out that my knees did not hurt or swell much from being up and doing, but my shins ached a lot. I would elevate and ice my shins in the evening which helped.

Josephine and Jamie both have said that this is just swelling that is in the shin area---who would ever think that shins could have swelling :what:

After two or three weeks, it just went away on its own. :snork: I could be wrong, but I think this is just another one of those pains that goes along with recovery.

Keep us posted. We care.:cat-kittyandsmiley: Judy

Well I'll be darned! This is exactly what I am experiencing. I'm at about 2 1/2 months and my knees are no longer bothering me but lo and behold, now I'm having this ache in my shins...just like you described. Amazing!!

Judy, thanks so much for getting back to me with your input. This is very helpful.

Dori, I have had exactly the same pain in my shin area, on the outside of the leg. I get it when I have done a bit more walking than normal and when I get home I ice (just like Judy) and it's fine. I did ask my OS about it and he said it's due to all tendon and muscles now in a proper alignment - they will just get used to their new position eventually. Again, slowly does it with all these delicate muscles :wink1:. It is annoying though that my knee gives me no pain but my shins do!! Hope that helps.

Yes, it Does help!! Thank you for sharing. Instinctively I iced my shins last night and I thought it was wierd but my knee was not aching and did not need to be iced so I just slipped the sleeve of the icing unit down to my shin area and went to sleep with it on. Who ever heard of icing a shin???:loll:

Jo, I just posted Congratulations to you on your 11 week check up. The results sound like you are doing so well in your recovery. Keep up the good work and enjoy your recovery. You're doing great.

I have some AWESOME news to share with all of you:

I was sitting in a chair across from my recumbent bike and I had my foot in the pedal, just rocking back and forth while I was talking on the phone. Before I realized it, I had made a complete revolution!

So I quickly got off the phone and onto the bike and lo and behold, I am able to make the full revolutions with no problem now. I am ever so pleased that I can ride this bike now. I think it is a direct result of the stretch therapy I have been doing and incorporating heat to loosen up the tendons and ligaments around my knee. That has made a world of difference in my comfort level and also in the way I am able to function.

Thanks so much for your support:)

Yea!!:yay:

Dori,

Congrats on the full revolution on the bike. Funny how these simple things make us TKR's so happy.

I would think that some of your shin pain might be because you need new shoes to walk in. I found a world of difference when I got new sneakers, a lot of the little odd pains and aches seem to go away. JMHO

Congratulations Dori - what a great feeling that is :thumb: . It is all falling into place for you - I knew it would :thumb: .

Rose has a good point about shoes - if you have used orthotics in the past it might be worth updating them too.

Rose, thanks for the advise about the sneakers. I intend to buy some new shoes tomorrow because I believe that will make a huge difference.

Thanks Jo, I really didnt believe I would ever make that first revolution because at first it was totally impossible. But I just kept doing the stretches and working on other things. I didn't even touch the bike for a couple of weeks. I was very surprised today when it happened, and very happy.

You're right PooShay, it happened without me even trying. Is this pic of your newly aligned legs?? They look beautiful!!

Well done Dori
I'm sure being able to do the bike will help with freeing up your knee even more. I get those shin aches too and we are the same surgery date so it's obviously another stage of this big knee journey to get through. But just look how far we have come already!

Hi Diane,

How are you doing with your recovery? Thanks for sharing about also having shin pains. I bought a new pair of sneakers today and am optimistic that that will help. But I agree, since you also are having shin pains, it's probably just a normal part of this overall healing process.

Dori...so sorry it has taken me a while to catch up to your question about the pain in your shin! But.....you were properly advised by your BoneSmartie friends!!

This is quite common and nothing to be alarmed about. Your knee has swelling even if you don't see it. The knee compartment is rather small so the fluid must go somewhere. When you are up and about as you are as you begin to feel better in recovery, that fluid is effected by gravity and moved down your leg. Shins also don't have a lot of space and so it hurts!

When this happens, take something for pain (a combination of Tylenol and ibuprofen is good - the BoneSmart cocktail), put your toes up above your nose for long periods of evevation and ice, ice, ice!

Thanks for the answer and the great advise Jamie. Yesterday I rode my recumbent for 5 minutes and did the Health Rider for 5 minutes and today I'm taking a break...taking it easy. So it's a good day to ice, ice, ice my shinbones:))

Thanks!

Dori
