THR Ginny's Recovery Thread (LTHR)

Hello,

Nothing new to report, which is probably good news!

I wish everybody well.

@Ginny12 I have only just seen your vomitgate post- which made me laugh but also truly feel your pain. Early in my recovery in 2017 from hip number 1, when I was hardly able to move, my cat also felt the need to regurgitate her whole breakfast over the bed where I was lying prone.. (this is not what she usually did).. but I hit a low point which fortunately had some humour in it, when I called the person who was looking after me to come in. He came in and started gagging at the smell and was nearly sick on top of the cat, me and the bed.

Everyone who was elsewhere thought this was hilarious.
Hope your weekend has been less messy.

@LdnFizz

Thanks for your post i am pleased to hear that it is just not my cat who gets up to this type of stuff.

I hope you recovery is going well.

Warmest wishes,

Ginny

Dear All,

General Question:

I do realize that each OS has different views on dental visit protocols, however, i am one of those people who despite really good oral hygiene is prone to plaque formation. I can see that a bit of my gum is inflamed and i would really like to nip that in the bud for obvious reasons.

I am awaiting a response from my OS, but, generally how long after the op can one go to the hygienist? My feeling is that it would be better to go sooner rather than later as if i get an infection i could be in big trouble as some of my fellow BoneSmarties are all too aware. My hygienist has just started to use the Airflow system which is much gentler on the gums but they could still bleed.

Many thanks for any responses.

Hi, @Ginny12, I hope this Monday finds you up and positive, with healthy cat and comfortable hip so you can get whatever you need to get done today. It's sunny in my neck of the woods, with a forecast of sunny days all week--hurray--although chilly. Still, with tons of errands to run daily, I am happy not to be facing our usual PNW rain and one can always bundle up if going out. Anyway, happy day and hope all's going well.

Hi, @Ginny12. My dentist appointment is now scheduled for three months after my surgery (September 26) as I was told no dental work until three months had passed. But, if you've got an actual concern (my January appointment is just for an annual check-up and cleaning) seems like you should check with your surgeon to see if it would be okay to get in now. Problems with teeth and gums can be pretty miserable if not nipped in the bud, so I'd be pro-active in terms of getting this checked out if you know you are prone to problems, assuming your surgeon is in agreement. Hope you have a good day.

@Layla @Barbaraj I hope that you are both well.

Thanks very much for your replies. My OS said if i need to have treatment before 3 months then antibiotics are required, so at least i now know his policy.

I am going to see my dentist tomorrow for a review and then i will take it from there. My diet has not been as good as it normally is and i have been eating things over the past 6 weeks that i usually don't. Bread, carbs and more sugary things in general. So the swelling of the gum might be related to that. Also i know the blood thinners can cause bleeding so clearly they affect gums in some way too.

I am viewing this as a reminder to eat well and started my vitamins again. I always clean my teeth religiously so i know it is not for that reason. My dentist is a lovely man and i know he will give me good advice what to do.

Thanks again

@Ginny12 glad you got clarification from your OS on seeing the dentist. Stress can also cause tender gums and certainly having major surgery falls under the "stress" category. Please let us know how your appointment goes.

Hi Ginny,
Best of luck at the dentist today. I hope you're having a nice Wednesday so far.
It's a cold one here. No surprise this time of year.
Warm wishes for a great rest of the week!
@Ginny12

Hope you are feeling reassured today, @Ginny12, that you can move ahead with a dental appointment sooner rather than later. We all worry about "is this--fill in the blank--okay?" after surgery. Having gone through so much, we absolutely don't want to mess things up with a misstep. But, I hope your dental appointment goes well, and you get a plan for moving forward that you're comfortable with. You are certainly more disciplined than I am--giving up all sugars and carbs can be hard, although I know that they can be inflammatory and for those of us with arthritis (grrr…) it is best to really limit our intake. I find this easier said than done, particularly this time of year! But, it is a goal we should all have--to eat in a more healthy fashion, get more exercise, manage our weight, etc. We also need to find time to laugh and enjoy ourselves, and give ourselves a break--so many "should do's" in life that it is sometimes hard to remember it's not all discipline and focus. Occasionally eating a doughnut or sugar cookie is something to be appreciated and savored--in moderation! Cheers, and happy Wednesday.

Dentist update:

My dentist said that my teeth and gums were fine so that's a relief. My anxiety still surfaces a lot so i was overreacting to the bit of gum i thought was swollen. However what i discovered was that my dentist said that my OS was being 'old school' re giving antibiotics for the first 3 months post op. Apparently the NICE guidelines (UK) state that antibiotics should not be given. But, of course, all the moderators on this site are advocating that anyway. My dentist also said that it was extremely unlikely that a dental infection would cause joint problems for the new implant. But i suppose that info does not comfort the rare person for whom it does.

As i am getting more mobile and getting out in the world i can tell that my posting is tapering off! Family stuff at this time of year eats up time too. Mind you i am not moaning about being lucky enough to have a family. This does not mean that i am not extremely grateful for all the support i have had and continue to have from you all.

I wish everybody well.

Ginny x

Nice to hear! I was not so lucky (read my recent thread) reassuring to hear that tooth infections leading to hip ones are rare. The antibiotics I have been on have sorted this out for the time being.

I am genuinely delighted that your recovery is going so well.

Have a lovely Christmas x

Good Saturday morning to you, @Ginny12. We all think it's fabulous that your postings are tapering off if it's because you are feeling so well, and the demands of the busy holiday season are taking over. This is what is supposed to be happening, and a huge cheer to you. My right hip is feeling pretty great, too, and left one only twinges occasionally, reminding me I need to be disciplined and consistent about exercises to keep strengthening my core and musculature around the hips. Anyway, it is always lovely to read about happy, successful and relatively uneventful recoveries even if that inevitably means we'll miss your more frequent postings. Get out there and enjoy life--that's what we all want. Kudos to you!

:driver:Driving and Crying is the name of a band that originated from my home state..:heehee:
Not sure why that came to mind :shrug:

I love a manual transmission but glad I didn't have to manage one with my two new hips!

Hope your Sunday is sweet!

Hi Ginny,
I'm happy the dental visit went well and you were comforted by the information you received.
Tapering off to engage fully in life is a great thing! It means you're doing well. I'm happy for you.
Stop by when you're able. We love updates. I hope you have a lovely Sunday and a great week!
@Ginny12

@Ginny12 I think it's great that you are getting back into the swing of things :ok: Also happy to hear that your dentist found no infection present. I hope you have a great day.

I am so glad things are getting back to normal for you.I'm looking forward to that.It's getting closer to that,but not quite.I figure I won't be fully normal for some time.(whatever normal will be for me).I hope you are having a good day.:)
