Good morning (for me 6:30 am):mcoffee:
Glad to hear you are able to get out a bit and getting some things done about the house.
Still early days for you, so do keep taking care of yourself.
This is the boring part...but all well worth it.
I know you said you aren't a big holiday fan but so much to be grateful for this season.
Next year, you will be golden!:dancing:

General update:

Overall i am doing very well, i have no sense of my new hip being a foreign body and this does surprise me. I am not sure what i was expecting but i have no awareness of it not feeling a natural part of me. I am not explaining myself well but i am very grateful that i have had the upgrade.

I think that i have may have mentioned it before but i am not a particularly active person. I used to be ashamed of this but one of the benefits if getting older is that one accepts oneself more. I love walking and i am not overweight but my idea of a good time is a good book. I thought that there was no possibility of me joining the ODIC (Over did it Club) however i may now be a junior member despite myself. I have recently had new insoles (prescription) and still getting used to them. Yesterday me and my dog went on a walk, she was having such a good time so i kept walking. I was not tired or in pain when i got home, however, overnight i was aware that my left ankle feels a bit swollen/sore and indeed the whole of the left operated leg feels a bit achy. Not enough to take a tablet but i will get the ice pack out again.

If one has stirred things up how long before it settles down? I know how long is a piece of string but are we taking days/weeks? I need to keep wearing the insoles but only doing so for a few hours at a time.

If i was not on this site i would be in a blind panic imagining the worst instead i can relax in the knowledge that it is unlikely that i have done any damage. For this i am extremely grateful thank you one and all.

I wish everybody well,

Ginny

Best to ice to stop any potential swelling but think you opened the door of the ODIC club a little. Easy to do when you are enjoying yourself! Take care x

I too was amazed that I have no awareness of a foreign device where my hip used to be!:yes:
It can take a few days of dialing things back to undo our overdids.

We all have done it to some extent...the only way we know what is too much and it doesn't help that it never hurts until we've stopped!:nah:
Cuddle with a book...dial it back..and ice.
You will be back on track very soon!:friends:

Youre good at conserving energy.
I am sort of active.i did chair yoga and chair tai chi before the surgery.i didn't walk much,but then again I could hardly walk so I had a good excuse.
I hope you feel better soon.

@allena

Thank you.

Now i like the idea of describing my laziness as "conserving energy". This is something else i will be repeating as a mantra ' I am conserving energy' it sounds so much better than 'can't be bothered'!

You have made me laugh too. I am smiling as i am writing this just thinking about how my husband will react if i say i am conserving energy. Again. I suppose i should add that i do do housework/cook and work hard at work. It's just at home i like to chill out. I may not sound like it now but i was a total wild child/middle aged woman till i met my husband. So after a very misspent youth and early middle age all this calmness is wonderful!

We all settle down eventfuly.
I'm glad I made you laugh.
I am lazy at home too.you're not alone.

I think I am still an adolescent when it comes to settling down. Enjoy your Ginny and don’t drop it in the bath ;-)

Good day, @Ginny12, it sounds as if you are doing well, despite fatigue (which everyone gets) and perhaps not a perfect gait (again, I think fatigue absolutely can bring that on--my back sometimes aches like crazy if I've done too much and--horror of horrors--I find myself hunching a bit). I know it's easy to get spun out and worrying that something is going wrong but I think if you read enough on this forum and take care of yourself (rest and ice if you overdo things) you will continue to move forward on your recovery journey. Chilling out is not a bad thing at all--you work hard, you say, and you deserve some down time. We don't have to be crazy busy all the time! Anyway, don't be so hard on yourself--a few pats on the back every day seem warranted to me. You survived hip surgery, your recovery is going well, and it's the holiday season! Cheers to you, and have a good day.

Hello @Ginny12 It is hard to pace one's self when feeling good!! Still keep to the "slow and steady wins the race" . Remember three months is early recovery!! That helped me to be mindful of however far I walked after first surgery. As it is said here, remember we still have to turn around and walk home too! It is a bit of a bummer that our body parts don't hurt until later, as we might turn around sooner!! Icing and reading your book for a few days will sort you out. I find that a hot shower helps the sore muscles. When you are cleared for a bath, a hot bath is glorious! You'll be back walking really soon :-)

Turn on some great music and the wild child in me lurks not far from the surface :heehee:
Have a great evening :flwrysmile:

Dear All,

2 months post op today.

I went to see my OS for my final check. All seems well and he does not normally see patients again unless they have a problem. So hopefully i will never see him again! I mean that in a good way as i think he is a wonderful surgeon and has been very kind to me.

I also had an appointment with the hospital PT. I often forget the exercises and more importantly the correct way to do the op. Anyway, today, i asked him to film me doing the exercises and walking. Wow what a difference this has made to my understanding of not only how to do them but i now have a baseline with my walking. I can see that my walking is slightly off, not a limp but stiff. My PT said the walking is 95% there and getting strength in the leg should sort it out. My operated leg is clearly getting more muscle and looks nearly the same as the other one. Pre-op my left thigh was much thinner and in trousers/jeans the material would just hang off the leg.

I am going to get my sessions videoed from now on.

I wish everybody the very best.

That is really interesting about videoing the walk. Might try that myself! Re not seeing your OS again - it was the same for me. But with the option of contacting the OS office if I was unhappy about something. How often are you PT sessions?

Nice update, Ginny!
Thanks for sharing. It's inspirational to others.
Having yourself on video doing the exercises correctly is a great idea.
I hope you're having a wonderful Tuesday :)
@Ginny12

Yay, a great update @Ginny12. I do remember that early walking, my husband said I wasn't limping but, boy, looked more like a staggering zombie! It all straightened out gradually as the muscles limbered up and gained some strength and I really concentrated on my posture and a more relaxed gait. Sounds like you are doing extremely well, and released from further visits unless anything further comes up--and here's hoping, as you noted, that you will never have to see him again, regardless of how nice he's been. That's one relationship I'm guessing you're willing to deep six now! Good idea about taping your PT sessions. If it brings understanding with visual cues about what you're doing, and how to do things properly, sounds like it's really helpful to you. I have a PT appointment this morning and while I don't "love" doing the exercises, I realize that only by being faithful and focused can I regain the strengthen and flexibility I had before all this OA nonsense kicked in. Have a great day!

@SurreyGirl

I had the op privately but only because my mobility had decreased very quickly and waiting for the OS i wanted would have taken much longer. For this opportunity i am extremely grateful but i would not have the funds if the other hip needed doing anytime soon.

However, i can also see the disadvantage of going privately too (apart from the cost!) as after five months he has no further responsibility towards me. So say i was unlucky enough to need further surgery in six months time i would either have to pay again or be seen by the NHS. I want to give a massive shout out to the NHS and the wonderful staff it employs. I know that there are some grumpy staff (and who can blame them with their workload) and the waiting time has increased but it is a massive safety net for us in the UK. Obviously this is not the correct place to get political, i just want to stress how grateful i am that the NHS exists.

As for the PT, in my private package (£9.500) this was included. I can attend as many sessions as need in a four month period post op. I have had x 3 sessions already and hopefully be signed off soon. When i saw the PT at two weeks post op he told me to forget the 90% rule or my leg would remain stiff. Well i didn't ignore it as i am a total coward and would prefer a stiff leg to a dislocation. But today he had ammunition against me (in a nice way) he said that i was stiffer than i need to be because i had obeyed the 90% rule, but my OS told me to follow it. I do understand different professionals have different takes on things and i respect their different areas of expertise. But boy it can be confusing knowing who to listen to sometimes.

Now just to confuse things even further, i also have my PT who i saw regularly before the op. I am planning to continue seeing him as he is also trained clinical pilates. He seems to inhabit the middle ground between the hospital PT and what is recommended on BS.

I cannot understand why i did not think of asking the sessions to be videoed before especially since it is on my phone and easy to access. Yes try it and might be worth getting your H to film at different times of the day and when tired etc.

Would have been worth watching you in France after a bit of their yummy wine!

Warmest regards x

@Ginny12
Videoing your walking sounds like a good idea. I'm off to see the physio tomorrow so might try it.

Your private package was very reasonable. Mine was more than yours but otherwise similar in that it covers me for 6 months.

I too paid because the pain got worse very suddenly and I couldn't bear to wait for the NHS. Despite saying I couldn't afford to pay for another op I did fork out to have the 2nd hip done.
On the other hand my knee replacement is being done on the NHS. I am very lucky though in that although it's on the NHS they are going to do it at the private hospital and it will be the same surgeon.

My physio and OS agree about the 90 degree restrictions so I don't have the conflicting advice that you are having.

Glad you seem to be doing well

@Bionic

Thank you for your post and kind thoughts.

How long did you have to follow the 90% rule please?

Ginny x

@Ginny12
My OS is a stickler for the rules and I have to stick to it for 3 months. Maybe it's excessive but I did it last time so will do it again his time.
Why would I pay all that money for a good surgeon and not take his advice?
