Hi Just caught up on recent posts - so pleased I did, I thought I was such a wimp for finding going downstairs still hard and also had worried my hips were now going as well. Such a relief to see it's likely to be walking differently from before - thank you everyone!

12 weeks today! Sometimes I can walk up and down the stairs and other times I can't. Swelling later in the day..I wonder? Still being wakened when I move position when sleeping which is a real downer. I think it is muscle pain behind the knee. hurts to straighten if bent and vice versa. Clicks a lot, ROM changes over the day but overall is good. I knelt today albeit with most of my weight on the other knee, but I did it. I randomly get odd niggles in odd places, thigh, hip, shin. Is this to be expected for a while yet? Sometimes feel like I have one leg longer than the other! I'm pleased i don't have to go back to work just yet as I am shattered by evening just pottering about and walking up to a couple of miles a day.

Yeah, Nancy those random odd niggles in odd places go on for a while. Almost 6 months now and I sometimes get a sudden sharp pain around the knee area--gone almost as soon as it comes--think it might be nerves waking up. Always startles me when it happens. And I can feel my knees click when I'm walking--don't really hear anything--I'm so used to it now it doesn't bother me at all.

But all we have to do is remember where we were 12 weeks ago for you and 6 months for me----and boy, oh boy, haven't things gotten BETTER and BETTER!!!

Absolutely! 12 weeks ago I couldnt lift my leg off the bed! That'll be that patience thing again! I hope this makes me a better person at the end of all this! Just nice to know I'm not alone...thanks:thumb:

Hi Nancy

Congratulations on your 12 week anniversary :thumb: I think we all feel we should be moving faster with this recovery, especially us younger folks, but it's the same for all of us - the knee is in charge and will be ready when it's ready. I know it can feel depressing to have these niggles and the not sleeping is no fun but it will all get better in time. Patience is the key word.

I hope you are okay today as I saw you posted on another thread that you were having a bad time (yesterday). Keep in touch xxx

I visited GP today. First time seeing a doc since day after op. I felt I wasn't progressing as well as everyone expected (including me) , have been tearful and in the Sleepless wee small hours am convinced something went wrong. Stupid I know but my mind works overtime when I can't sleep. She was very nice . Said 'younger' active patients are too hard on themselves, expect too much. Older less active patients are happy to lose pain but younger patients need more 'functionality'. I lnow its a sweeping statement and doesnt apply to us bone smarties! She said I'm doing fine, that surgeons don't see the recovery after most ops and it's easy for them to say '6/8 weeks' and they're wrong it takes a lot longer. Reassurance was good to get. She wouldn't give me anything for insomnia, said it will sort itself out in time but she did give me a mild anti depressant ( I've had them in the past) to help me cope. So, more of that patience required then !!

I bet you do feel better for having a chat with your GP and it sounds as if she has reassured you that all is well with your knee. Patience, patience, patience is the right word for this recovery :thumb: I hope your sleeping improves soon but in the meantime think of your sunshine holiday coming up :wink1: Take care xx

Sounds like you've got a good GP.

Physio today. Says bend is a bit over 130 :thumb: didn't seem bothered about flexion. Says he thinks my 'behind the knee' pain that wakens me in the night is caused by tight hamstrings. So more stretches required.

Hey---hang in there and do not be too hard on yourself---130 is awesome! Gentle hamstring stretches will help a great deal---why not use a little heat on the hammies before you stretch them---get them good and warm and then gently stretch---a heating pad on the hamstrings helped me, too!

Hey Nancy, that ROM is great :thumb: It's all falling into place for you. Tim is spot on with his advice about heat on the hammies, I do that from time to time when they are feeling a bit tight - it really helps :thumb:

I also must say my physio is great. He always says 'if there's pain, don't do it. Discomfort yes but if it's painful take a step back. '

That is one awesome PT you have---many of them go beyond that. When you stretch your hamstrings, you may want to try a heating pad to warm up your muscles---and then gently stretch those hammies! I will warn you---they can be obstinate little boogers and take time to loosen up!

Advice please about sunshine. I am planning a holiday in the sunshine (20 weeks after op), I am a sun worshipper and tan fairly easily. Is it ok to put my scar out there in the sun? Will it fade my scar or make it worse?

I sat out every day for 6 weeks in Florida starting at 6 weeks pre-op. Put sunscreen on my scar as I did everywhere else and it didn't seem to be affected at all..but I felt so good ! Have fun !

Forget your scar! It's part of you so if you like the sun, it will too! :wink1:

Hi I am now 2 weeks post op- sleeping is almost impossible for me- my OS said for me to take tylenol PM (I am lucky in that I do not take any pain medication for knee other than tylenol) so will give that a go tonight...

You sound like you are doing very well... I can walk about 1/4 mile and then I am exhausted!!! I found rest and ice to be my best friends (other than my cats and husband:)- good luck my knee friend!
