Hi @H2OPoloMom, there is one thing about recovery...we learn something new every day, whether we like it or not. Hope you get the pain and swelling down to a manageable level.

Happy Birthday to your son on the 3rd and your daughter on Friday!

Thank you @71Beetle! You are almost 2 months into your recovery, do you feel like you can trust your new knee when you get the second one done this week? Partially curious and partly looking for a little hope for my own future (even though I know that we all recover at our own pace).

Hi @H2OPoloMom, the only thing that concerns me about the right knee recovery is going down stairs. I have a set up on the main level of the house so I think I will be spending the first couple of weeks down here. Other than that, I am pretty confident that I will do okay.

So for the past couple of days, I have been spacing out my at home PT over the course of the day and it seems to be working, the swelling and tight band feeling is better, still there, but better. I also got the approval yesterday to skip my meloxicam and aspirin and switch to ibuprofen. I had been taking meloxicam once a day for swelling as directed when I got out of the hospital, but if anyone had asked me before I was pumped full of the really big pain killers, I could have told them that it doesn't help me for pain. Anyway, using the ibuprofen, I have been able to lengthen the times between Percocet doses without any additional pain. We'll see how it holds up to outpatient PT which I start tomorrow. Looking forward to at least getting out of the house again.

So earlier I had reported my extension as -10 because that is how my home PT wrote it in her notes. I wondered about the - but assumed it was because I was 10 degrees from the floor. While reading through the library, I realized that here, it would be reported as just 10 because I cannot fully extend yet. Still proud of what I can do:thumb:.

My least favorite stretch is sitting in a chair with my foot up on another chair allowing gravity to straighten the knee! It's like finger nails on a chalkboard feeling:dubious:.

I put it on the top of my footboard. Higher elevation and stronger pull. At 6 weeks it's not so bad anymore.

They have us put a weight on our knee for that one. I don't mind it but I have a good extension. I wish my flexion was as good.

How are you doing today?

@beetle71 When I'm sick or healing, I sleep a ton! So for the past day and a half, I've been up for an hour or so, then I sleep for an hour or two. My long awake stretch was in the middle of the night last night, but it wasn't too bad because my 13 year old was having a sleep over , so every so often giggles drifted up from the basement:heehee:.

I'm trying to mentally prepare myself for PT today since it's my first outpatient and I'm not sure what to expect. I've had PT before after my carpal tunnel release therapy and it was all soothing PT: massage, ultrasound therapy, heat therapy. I've also been in to strengthen my muscles when I was first diagnosed with arthritis, but at that point, my legs were strong already and it was no problem. After reading about some peoples experience here, I'm gearing up to maintain the discomfort is ok, but pain is not attitude and I'm just hoping that I don't even have to even go there (as in stand up for myself).

@msmechanic58 thank you for the hope! I begrudgingly do the extension exercise, but do the other extension exercises more frequently, like walking backward or lifting my straight leg up behind me while holding on to the counter or my walker. Both of those feel good and are supposed to help with extension too.

Right across my knee. The first week there was no weight but they added as I went along. I was up to 5 pounds by the end of my 4 weeks of PT. I never had any extension issues so it may have been easier for me.

Just got back from my first OPT appointment and have discovered that his idea of pain equals my idea of just becoming uncomfortable. He wanted to start out slow to figure out how much I could handle without paying for it later. My list of exercises and stretches has been cut to less than half of what I had been doing, and the bottom end of the reps was the top end of what I had been doing before (so before was 5-10 and now it's 10-20). I think this is going to be OK.

@71Beetle my physical therapist is having me do the same exercise starting with a 5 lb weight, but with me sitting and not extending my leg from one chair to another, so I think it's going to be ok.

I truly hope that you sleep well tonight and that you are first on the roster tomorrow!

They put the weights on my knee cap. The other one is with me lying face down and knees and calves off the table. They put the weights on my ankles for that one.

Looking forward to reading your updates. You have done really well. May you have an uneventful recovery.
