designergirl, I feel the same, the more I move the less stiff I feel. The PT wants me to do exercises that I don't think I could do before surgery. I think I'm gonna do the resistance band, that makes more sense. I also printed off some exercises off a hip surgery site that seem to make sense too. I will work and try to do the exercises they gave me but I don't know how well I will do. My husband and me went out to dinner last night. The first time really being out of the house except to go to PT. I was nervous about getting out and twisting and turning and not having my comfort nest around me but it turn out okay. Were you able to get out and have your walk? It's not nice weather here so walking outside is a ways off.
Kim22, my next surgery date is April 12th. Some days I look forward to it but there are days I know I need to get some serious healing done between now and then. I am walking with a cane and to put full weight on the operated hip is painful right now

Hi sandybeach

You are doing amazing. I can't imagine going out anywhere just yet. I find too, the more I walk the less stiffness and pain there is. Keep up the good work!

Thanks Bellaroma, I didn't realize I put March instead of April of my next surgery. I fixed it now. I just got back from my second PT. I had none in home. I have been out quite a few times now since surgery, it's becoming easy except we got ice everywhere so have to be really careful when walking. I got a lot more progress today then before. More of the stretching exercises in and that's what I need to walking and moving normally again.

I take my hat off to you sandybeach! You are amazing, doing both hips so close together, and the end result will be really worth it.

octopus...Thanks. My surgeon told me when I asked him if he has done very many hip replacements as close together as I'm having mine done and he said not many people are brave enough. I took that as a compliment but the truth is I just want to get rid of this pain as fast as I can. I know there's several people on here that have had both done at the same time, now those people are brave and amazing.

You said in a post on another thread, "I agree with PT being brutal. I went today, my second time and I have been icing all evening and took pain pills that knocked me out for awhile. "

Why are you allowing your PT to be "brutal"? I had PT with my hip and with both my knees and it was never even a bit unpleasant. You are not doing yourself or your hip any favor to allow this kind of thing. I am going to quote the famous BoneSmart mantra to you---if members would follow it to the letter they could have much more pleasant recoveries:

- rest, elevate, ice and take your pain meds by the clock
- if it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physiotherapist - to do it to you
- if your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again
- if you won't die if it's not done, don't do it
- never stand when you can sit, never sit when you can lie down, never stay awake when you can go to sleep!

Please do not put up with "brutal" PT. Take care, keep posting, we care. [Bonesmart.org] First hip replacement done.

bottomshollow, I have never had to go to PT before in my life. My hips/legs haven't moved normally since May and maybe to some extent several months before that. Going to PT I can hardly move and that's their job to get me to move. I am doing this on an operated leg, one that needs the therapy but what I am being told to do for my operated leg my bad leg is saying "oh no". Just laying on the table and the PT says roll over....major job for me because again my legs won't help, it's all upper body. My legs are so stiff. Every move I make is pain. With trying to cut back on the med's my un-operated leg is coming back to life and hurting like no one's business at times. The first night in the hospital I woke up in pain, but not from the leg that was operated on. So many times I wonder what if I just did what I have to do and forget PT until after my next hip surgery. Has anyone else been able to do that and been alright? I think I need PT just to help the operated leg.

Given what you've said about lack of use of your hips/legs, of course you need PT---but they need to take it slow and easy with you. And I can tell you that this is going to take quite some TIME to get you back to "normal". Muscles will begin to atrophy easily and quickly without use---but getting them back up to speed is a slow process. But you need to be taking your pain meds. You're not a month post op---and being in pain is NOT conducive to healing. So please take your pain meds as prescribed on a regular schedule----this will help you alot.

FYI, I know about how long it takes muscles to become reconditioned after not being used for a long period of time---I am watching my hubby rehab from having both knees replaced after being a semi-invalid for over three years. It took him until 4 months post op to stand with his walker on his own and another 2 weeks to take steps with his walker. It will probably be at least three more months before he can actually "walk" with his walker on his own without being supervised. So I know how tough this can be. But I also know that with perseverance IT CAN BE DONE!

I now that YOU CAN DO IT, TOO! And I have no doubt that you will. Just, please, take your pain meds.

Take care and keep us posted. We care.

Sorry about your husband but it sounds like he has a super great advocate for him and someone coaching him on as to what and how he needs to do things. Yeah I agree with the time it will take and I'm willing to put in the time. I don't think I will be dancing anytime soon:dancy:. I just know that my un-operated leg is holding me back right now. Yesterday I did tell the Physical Therapist that my other leg is hurting and she did back off. I told her that I am going to have that operated on in a few weeks too. She did start to do stretches with the good one but by that time both legs were hurting and continued through last night. She did give some new exercises to do but everything I do I have to bring along my bad leg. When it was all over I felt like I had been hit with a truck and felt very sore achy the rest of the evening. Maybe I need to suck it up and stop whining...I am on the road recovery after all.

Sandybeach...i need to have both my hips done, but my dr won't do them together or close together...he said 3 months...so i worry about my left side being able to support me during recovery...I think u r very brave to have them done so close together...and don't be so hard on yourself when u really don't have any control over the bad leg...remember everybody is different...everyday is different!!

Anniemg, I am in the same position. I had my RTHR done in December 2012 was told 3-4 months wait before the other one is done. I have found recovery hampered by my left hip. The operated leg is good but I am on medication for the left leg and still in pain. I use two sticks as I cant rely on my left leg. It is prone to giving way or locking at times. I am just impatient to get the op done and my life back. Barbara

anniemg, thanks for the kind words. I am probably too hard on myself. I feel like I have suffered for so long with pain. I know I'm far from being done with the pain. I hope you soon get a date for your next surgery. I know what you're going through with every step you take. I asked my surgeon on my first visit to him how long between operations does it take for him to be willing to do them and he said 4-5 weeks so I was able to schedule the operations for 6 weeks between them. People have asked me about the second surgery, I am looking forward to it. They don't understand the constant pain and think I'm crazy to want surgery. I just want them over with and then I can totally heal. My hip that I had operated on is doing okay but I know it will be so much better after the next surgery when my other leg stops hurting all time I move.

Sandybeach, April 12th will be here in no time. It is a great relief to have both done and to move on from there. In the meantime, your left hip continues to heal, and you know just what to expect this time around. Rooting for you!!

Sharon

I can't believe how long it's been since I wrote on my own thread. My new hip is doing great!! I have no to very little pain from surgery, my challenge is to get those muscles and tendons to move normally again. I still need a cane but little by little my leg is getting stronger. The last few days I am getting back into somewhat a normal schedule. I haven't driven yet but I know I can and I will be okay to do that. I have gone grocery shopping, used the cart as my walker and did okay walking around in the store. Last night went out to our daughters birthday party, had to walk about a block to get there and was up and down a lot during the evening and then had the long ride home and felt pretty good but a little tired. Oh yeah I baked and decorated the cake...she celebrated the big 30. I can't believe I my children are getting into their 30's.

sandybeach, sounds like you are recovering nicely now. I am champing at the bit to drive again (22nd April for me). I really hate relying on others. The other day I ran out of one of my pain meds and had to wait til my Son came home after work to take me to the chemist. I really miss the freedom.

I know the feeling only too well, Sandybeach, as my son just turned 47. I keep telling him that it's his birthdays that are making me old. And my grandson, who we raised, recently turned 24 and has a 6 months old son. Gosh, I really am feeling old :groan: !

@Alleycat My OS never mentioned when I can start to drive. I just figured, I'm not taking really strong painkillers anymore so I should be okay. He signed for me to go back to work starting next Monday and I have to drive to get to work.
bottomshollow, kids grow up so fast and now I'm also seeing that with our grandchildren our oldest is 6 and in school but the time has flown since she was born. They fight so hard at her age to grow up and we fight equally as hard to keep them young, unfortunately time wins.

Good luck going back to work on Monday SB :)

I only did home PT after my left hip replacement and on the Doctors advice I waited for PT until I just had my right one done. I couldn't walk on my non-operated hip and definetly couldn't get up very easily, you do end up using alot of upper body and all my exercises before the right hip surgery used only my left leg, like one sided clam shells
