Sandybeach to the wonderful world of recovery. You are doing remarkably well---I am so happy for you. Just follow the BoneSmart mantra and recovery will continue to be the best.

Take care and keep us posted. We care. [Bonesmart.org] First hip replacement done.

Drbabs, I will continue to take the stool softeners. I am drinking prune juice and I had my husband pick up MOM. I am not in any discomfort yet but I just don't want that to become an issue...I'm trying to stay ahead of it if I can. Does a probiotic just work at keeping your stomach feeling good?

Congrats on the quick release from the hospital! My doc prescribed Senokot twice a day, and I started drinking grape juice at home. I had a BM on the third day after surgery. You must be doing really well if you're already progressing to a cane. It seems like you'll be in good shape for your second THR.

Hi SB, my OS prescribed stool softeners twice a day. I'm eating Greek yogurt once a day along with the good old prunes and my digestive system has come back to life. My diet right now high fibre although I'm not very hungry. I' m also eating raw carrots every day. I did this prior to surgery since the Tramodol and Vicodan also constipated me. I' m trying to drink a lot of water also. Makes you get up more and walk also. I also am trying to stay away from meat for the time being. We use lots of dried beans in our recipes, so will continue to do so.

I'm jealous of that shower. My sponge bath certainly was better than nothing, but still not great. I made a splashy mess on the floor too. I will put down a larger towel on the floor next time.

My daughter is now busily cleaning the house while I lay here and chill.

I haven't had a big appetite either since surgery. I have taken stool softeners and I'm drinking prune juice. My digestive system woke me up in the middle of night to say hello. I think I should continue to take the softeners while I'm on the Oxycontin. The shower was wonderful. I don't have any dressings that need to be changed. The way I understand it, my OS glued the outside of the cut and taped it over. The tape stays on for 10 days and then comes off. My husband said while in the hospital I asked the OS why he didn't suggest having both hips done at the same time...I don't remember this, but he just said I wouldn't have wanted that and he doesn't recommend it. Having one hip operated on and one that hasn't isn't easy but I don't know how I would cope with both just being operated on either.

Oh, yes, Sandybeach, you absolutely want to continue to take the stool softener as long as you're on narcotic drugs---and even for a couple of weeks after you've stopped them completely. You really do not want to have your plumbing stopped up----it's more miserable than any surgical pain.

Take care-----we care. [Bonesmart.org] First hip replacement done.

Wow, only one night at the hospital! And you are doing great. I stayed on the walker a couple weeks and the gradually went to the cane. Can't wait until it's gone too. Hope you continue to do great!!

Your post-op story is so inspirational...I didn't find this site until I had been through surgery, so I didn't know what to expect. It certainly didn't match your experience, not by a long chalk. Sound like you are managing really well, I am very happy for you. Number 2 will be a piece of cake!

I can see a difference with my recovery everyday. I have more energy and I'm getting up and doing the short walks around my house every hour or so. I have cut back on my pain med's and I am also doing okay with that. It will get annoying soon not to be able to do the things I want to do. I can see that already. The house is slowly becoming in need of some serious cleaning. My husband has been great doing all that he has but the cleaning skill, he doesn't have. I hate to say too much to him about that when he's doing everything around here. We are getting snow and have since last night so he has that job to clean all that away. Next week he has to go back to work. I have my follow-up check up Monday, he will go with me to that and then after that he returns back to work. I will be okay by then we will just have to plan ahead with meals that are easy for me. I start my physical therapy this Thursday.
2Bpainfree, It is snowing on my beach  We are having snow now and the forecast is for more this weekend. So far the snow is falling around my doctor appointments and that I am so thankful for. Some friends that we travel with just got back from vacation in Mexico. I'm not sorry I didn't get to go, I wasn't in anyway physically able to this year but it gives me hope to get through this to be able to plan a vacation for next year.
Hope everyone is doing a little better today than yesterday.

Hi sandybeach, your neighbor to the east of you. We are also getting the snow. It started about 7 this morning and the news says it should continue until about 9 tonite. I would say we got around 4-5" already. My wife and son are home because they called off school so got some help with snow removal. Just thinking back around middle of Jan our lawns were bare and now were buried....

Hi badgerfan, we have 8 inches right now and it is still coming down. We got snow around Thanksgiving and had some on the ground ever since but we did go through a long streak where we didn't get any snow. But these past few weeks we sure have been getting our share. My husband said our snowmobiles are buried in the snow....I hear we are going to get more this coming weekend too. Lot's to go riding in. We live in the country so to remove the snow my husband just gets the tractor running and clears it away, he does have to use his muscles for the sidewalks though.

Sandybeach, trust me on this one. The dust will wait. Nothing will happen if it just sits there a while longer. AND, if you clean it up, it will be back in a few days. In the eternal scheme of the Universe, it just doesn't matter. Crikey, you're one week post op and thinking of cleaning? Listen to the cat in this video: :)

I'm glad to finally get to visit your thread and see that you're doing so well! 'Will check back next time I'm "making the rounds." I've enjoyed all of your posts in the other threads, including my own.

Cheers,

HHH

It's been awhile since I made an update to my own thread. I've been reading so much of what everyone else is writing and making comments on those. When I'm on here for very long I get tired and have to take a break but I'm so glad to be able to come to my computer anytime I need the encouragement and have it here. I know I will need this site for several months in the future and even then check in and offer encouragement.
I went to PT yesterday for the first time since being home. I had a little confusion in getting all that scheduled but we finally got it done. I have been walking around the house as much as I felt I could but now I have the exercises that I need to start doing 3 times a day. They are hard for me. My legs have been so stiff and sore since this all hit me back in May so my muscles are quite tight and not wanting to move much. What also makes this difficult is I still have my bad hip that is waiting to be operated on. I know after that surgery everything will fall into place quickly and going through this once I know what to expect the next time around too. My pain level has never gotten bad and I have had a pretty good experience with this entire surgery. There are frustrations occasionally with just wanting to be able to throw the cane and walker away and be normal right now but also I know in time it will happen and I'm closer to that time happening now than I was before the surgery. I have not had a day of "the blues" but I have had them come on quickly out of no where and then be gone just as fast. Some things that will be major changers for me today is I will be losing my compression socks, I have had to wear them for 10 days post operation and my med's are changing from Oxycontin to Norco. I am icing all the time and getting up walking around the house frequently. Time will tell me how these changes go.

Good for you SB. Sounds like you are doing great, even with a bad hip. One day at a time. I don't think we expect the sore muscles. Sure, I read about it in the library, but until those aches sink in, I think we forget that is part of it. My incision feels terrific, no pain, but my front quad muscles and my knee are very painful. The nurse told me that the knee pain is because of the long band of muscles that starts up by the hip and extends right own to below the knee is very angry from being moved or cut. This is just part of the plan. Was the OxyContin giving you bad side effects. I hope the Norco works better. Take care surgery buddy.

I am doing pretty good, probably better than I expected because I haven't had any real pain issues. I incision has been itching now for a few days. I still have tape covering it so I haven't really seen it yet. The Oxycontin wasn't causing any bad effects just that the doctor figured it is time to step down from that harsh of a drug. I would fall asleep really easy when taking it and then I would wake up quickly thinking that someone was standing by me and there would be no one.....little freaky. I was on Norco before surgery and did well on it but it also makes me tired. I hope your muscle aches clear up soon. Do you have any other issues? How's your PT going? I just started so I hope soon I can get my legs moving better....sideways movement is hard for me.

You are doing great Are. You having the right side done on Tuesday ?

PT for me is a series of stretches, using an elastic band for resistance and walking. I walk around the house a lot. Today if the weather is good, I will take a ten minute walk outside. It seems the more I move, the less I feel in and stiffness in my muscles.
