Diane's Knee Quest finally the real deal

Ya I would love snow alot more these days that I don't have to trudge thru it to go to work every day. I grew up in Brooklyn NY and lived thru lots of snow. Moved to FL to escape it. But now I miss it. Haha grass is always greener huh

Sometimes I wish I could live somewhere it's always warm but I think I would miss the seasons far too much. I've got my AWD car so it's no problem getting around. Most years that is October through April though!

Back to pain meds--Have you thought about tylenol 3? Tylenol doesn't very little for me, but put a little codeine in it and it works quite well--really helps my bone on bone shoulder joint and my sciatica. I often get by with just 1/2 a tablet--which is less codeine than you can get with 2 "tylenol with codeine" over the counter in Canada.

Tylenol with codeine is not available OTC in the U.S. I have the rx for tramadol and that with the ibuprofen takes the edge off. I am gonna try substituting the extra strength tylenol or the Tylenol arthritis with the tramadol. How are you getting tylenol with codeine in Oklahoma?

Yes, I know it isn't over the counter in the states--just mentioned Canada to show that not all countries are as hyper as the US. :sigh: I have had no problem getting either my surgeon or my GP to prescribe it as even here it is considered a relatively mild "narcotic." For me is also way less expensive than oxy etc.

Hmm ok interesting. I'll see how the T/T combo works. If not, Im pretty sure I have some Tylenol 3's here, from a tooth extraction in February. Do you drive when you take that?

I usually take it at bedtime, so no, I don't drive, but I lived in Canada for years and I took both aspirin and tylenol with codeine; I would take two at a time (16 mg codeine) and had no problem driving. Sometimes I do take a tylenol 500 with my 1/2 tylenol 3 since 1/2 tylenol 3 is only 150 mg of tylenol.

So today is my first day trying extra strength tylenol with my tramadol instead of the ibuprofen. So far dont feel the relief I get with the ibuprofen, but I'll give it a few days.

I got the foam elevation pillow from footsmart. I dont think it's gonna work for me. First off it feels hard. And in order to get the bend of my knee over the first hump, my feet hang over the end with my ankles pressing on the edge of the cushion. I'll play with it a bit, but probably will send it back and resort to the pillow stack. Kinda sad cyz I loved the shape and ease of just having the one piece.

I tried it as well, for the same reasons and came to the same conclusion. Lol Of course there are various types out there, you just have to find the right fit. The pillow stack works well for me and is easily adjustable.

Huh, I was just re reading my hip replacement recovery thread to to go over what I went thru. And lo and behold, had I read it before starting this knee quest might have saved myself months of dr searching. This is what @Jamie had posted to me . As it turns out THIS is the very doctor I wound up with on a very circuitous path.

So @Jamie early report is he is great, and im very confident in him. We'll see how I feel after surgery. I wish I would have seen this a few months ago. :-) but I guess better late than never. Question for you, how did you find him and what have you heard about him?

Here is the surgeon you might consider for a second opinion:

I know you are really tired of medical "stuff," but any time there is the possibility of infection, I always feel like it's a good idea to get a couple of opinions on the situation. Please do let us know if you decide to see Dr. Haidukewych and how things work out. We always appreciate feedback on specialists.

Hi @dianehelen,

I thought I should answer you here on your thread instead of someone else's. I remember you from the hip area too. I thought I was done with joint replacements - that was just one hip due to congenital problem. Knees were just fine until I fell and broke my tibial plateau and dislocated my knee - while on a bike ride in Tours, France. That was 9 months ago, after healing that I had to have a knee replacement in February - still battling adhesions and stiffness but making slow progress. I had adhesions removed from the first surgery at the TKR but have them again. I can walk quite a bit now and function pretty well, not really taking pain meds but putting up with some minor pain. Have about 100-105 flexion finally, extension has been fine. My French doctor is pleased I'm walking at all, and Doctor here says I may not get a lot more than 105-110.

I hope your knee will go well with no complications or trouble!

wow @charmed-life sounds like you have had quite the adventure. Are you back in the states now or still in France? What was involved in removing adhesions? Im glad you hear you are able to walk well, at least. Be careful with that bike riding I guess ;), Stay well and good to hear from you.

I sometimes wonder how @shrinkette and @Vetgirl are doing, they have not been around for a very long time..

And do you remember doctor toonz? I know the spelling is wrong as I did a search for him but couldn't find anything. He had a bilateral thr and his posts were hilarious. He had me laughing out loud sometimes.

do you remember doctor toonz

Hmm doesnt sound familiar. But I was going thru such a hard time I didnt really follow alot of people. I was mostly communicating with those that were posting to me. Maybe a bit selfish, but just a very dark time for me

Certainly not selfish at all. It's what any of us would have done. I can't begin to imagine how scary your experience must have been. The fact that you are now brave enough to have a further replacement amazes me. You must be in such a lot of pain. I thought long and hard and waited too long because my aunt had an infection in her knee implant a few years ago, even tho like all of us, she had been very careful in choosing her hospital and OS.

brave enough to have a further replacement amazes me

It amazes me too, I am not really the brave type,as I swore I'd have medicare but me a power chair before risking another elective surgery. But it's taken me 2 years of watching my world shrink so much, that I didnt want these last few years , or decades of my life to be so limited. I'm TERRIFIED of the whole process. I went thru 6 months of disappointment finding a surgeon, but feel pretty confident in the one I found, im just shutting my eyes, and getting on roller coaster and hope for a better outcome than the hip.

Diane, you are very informed, prepared and ready for this surgery and you will win this battle just like you won the past ones and come out on the other side being and stronger person and pain free...we are in a stage of our lives were we are supposed to enjoy life and not be slave to the pain that controls every activity that we do. Reading your thread I know that you are a strong person and a great example to the rest of us:flwrysmile:

I dont feel strong.. But I agree that I am tired of pain controling my life. But I look at people like you and @sistersinhim and @Floridagal and @Happydale and others and I sure hope my journey is anywhere close to that and not like my hip journey. But I cant say the fear isnt constantly gripping me.

Thanks for you kind words @uva55 Clara, my FL west coast neighbor. Maybe some day when we are healed n happy we can meet for a glass (or several) of wine and chat pain free

We are all scared when we make a decision that can impact the rest of our lives...in the back of my mind I questioned myself if I should have my TKR 'til the moment I went under anesthesia, even when they stuck me 6 times, unsuccessfully, trying to do a spinal I was wondering if it was a sign that maybe I shouldn't do it, while all along I knew that I had no choice in the matter unless I was ready to watch life pass me by.

I would love, one day, to meet for a glass(es) of wine to celebrate this new chapter in our life.
