@DeepBreath Congratulations on your first solo shower. That is a big step towards independence and I am very pleased for your progress. All these improvements are big milestones in recovery.I read that not only was the PT a pain in the neck with an attitude problem but he smoked. This is not health enhancing behaviour for a health care professional and not pleasant for his patients. It is not easy to stand up for ourselves so early in recovery so Welldone you.

@DeepBreath
What a wonderful feeling it is to be able to get in and out of the shower to bathe yourself. I remember those days, myself, and how proud my hubby was the first time. He, like yours, also made me promise the same thing. They are both so protective. The first step to independence and freedom is now under your belt. Congratulations, sweetie and Happy Birthday to your hubby. Enjoy your outing and steak dinner!

Hi Deep! Yay for you! I felt so much better when I could do my shower by myself! I love that your husband made you promise to do it only when he is at least in the vicinity and yes, that is a reasonable request with the weight bearing restrictions... for sure! He sounds like a good man.
Each bit of freedom is so exciting! I am still afraid to walk very far ( outside) by myself. I worry about tripping and falling. but hubby can't be here for all of the walks so I just make them shorter and do more laps.
Please refresh my memory about your restrictions,, are they lifted soon? Will you still go for the other hip soon?
I think you will do so well and then you will really REALLY fly!

Open doors and windows, the smell of wood fires burning in the evenings... I love this time of year and especially enjoy it since I am home and can really savor it. gratitude, bay-bay! :yes!:
hubby drove me to my studio and I was so happy to see it and putz around.. I miss being there so much.
But it's all for the better good.
Have a good day!!

Thanks for sharing in my milestone, friends. :)
@Hipster Girl, the walker does work well. It's stable enough that I feel very safe while showering, but still mobile enough to move around as I need to. I really like your idea of using the 3 in 1 commode in the shower. Sometimes while I am standing in the shower my non op hip gets very cranky. I might have to try the commode so I can sit part way through if needed.

@Kim22, yes, the PT guy experience was just....odd. I didn't feel like his attitude towards the whole process was very helpful. I really didn't like the odor, especially when he had me on the 'leash' thing...which is what it felt like with him at the other end.

Thanks, @Nana757! These gains truly are happy moments. I'm looking forward to our outing this evening. I know hubby will get the steak, but this place we're going to also does a mean tuna steak...cooked perfectly. Decisions, decisions!

@CricketHip, I don't blame you at all for being cautious when your husband isn't there to walk with you. It makes sense to do the shorter route and up the laps. It sounds like you are doing SO great and I'm so happy for you. What a gorgeous time of year to be recovering! :)
I go back for reevaluation on October 26th. I'll get x-rays and the surgeon will see how things look at that point re: the fracture. Fingers crossed that I'll be cleared for full weight bearing at that time.
The plan now is to go ahead with the other surgery at about 8 weeks out from this one. While I don't relish the whole immediate post surgery thing, I sure look forward to having the surgeries behind me.
I do hope that once I have two shiny new hips I'll be on my way to walking pain and limp free! I know it will take some time to retrain the muscles, but I'll have so many 'To Do's' accomplished already. That will be a good feeling.
And yes, my husband is a good guy. I had my doubts about how he would do with this whole thing, but he's really been a stand up guy and has taken very good care of me. I'm eternally grateful for his love and support.

I hope all of you are having a terrific day, friends.

Congrats on the solo shower. It's the little things we find joy in during recovery. I hope you continue to have continuous improvement in your healing. Once again, although I dreaded it, I have to say having #2 done so quickly after hip #1 is the best thing I've done. Time is going so quickly and it will all be behind me soon.

Hi @DeepBreath,

Just caught up with your thread. Congratulations on the shower. I liked having the walker to reach for after my shower. It's wonderful to hear your progress.

I've been making big salads, too. Made one today with homemade garlic croutons. I used leftover No Knead bread. You sound like you're making great strides....

Hi @Doodles51! It's good to 'see' you. :) Yes, I think plunging in for the second surgery will be a good thing. You definitely get into a mindset while recovering and I imagine it's challenging to have too much time between surgeries if you need more than one. What will be, will be. Hopefully I can get my right hip done soon. :)

@Hip Hip Hooray! , oooh, the homemade garlic croutons sound amazing! I am just loving my salads...craving them like crazy, so there's something in them my body is definitely needing.
Thanks for your congrats on the shower. It's funny, I didn't 'know' any of you 6 weeks ago and now I am sharing details like that and fully knowing that you all completely understand what I'm talking about.
I'm so glad I found this place. :)

We had a great time at dinner this evening. Two of our friends joined us and it was a merry little party. The food was great (I opted for the tuna steak...SO good!), the conversation lively, and I was able to sit for 2+ hours very comfortably and navigated my ouside time easily. It felt GOOD to get out.

Wishing good things for all my hippie buddies.

Looking good, sheeesh at this rate you will be catching the tuna

I'm thrilled to hear you had such an enjoyable evening with your hubby and friends. The tuna sounds absolutely delicious. I'm a seafood lover, too, while my hubby is a steak and potatoes kinda guy. Where did you have dinner? Might have to try it, the next time we're up that way.
You know, even with your 2nd surgery looming in the near future, I have no doubt that you will breeze through this. And now that you know what to expect and what is entailed, which should ease your mind a little, knowing how well you've done, so far, with this recovery. Great job, my friend!

@DeepBreath,
I felt such a sense of relief when I woke up from surgery and found out that they had been able to do both of my hips. My surgeon told me that they could do a bilateral, as long as there wasn't too much blood loss after the first one. There's a lot of mental and emotional energy involved with hip replacements. So glad to hear that you are healing well.

It sound like you really enjoyed your outing with your friends. Being able to sit comfortably in a restaurant is a big deal. That was one of my symptoms, pre op. I'd be the only one aching and squirming, and I didn't know why. Same thing on car trips. The tuna sounds delicious, too! Good food and good times...

@Legin, thank you for the kind words. :) I got this mental image of me reeling in a huge tuna and it made me laugh.

@Nana757, thank you too, friend. :) I hope the second is successful as well. One day at a time I keep telling myself. We went to the Aberdeen Barn on Richmond Rd. It's a bit pricey, but the service is great and the food is very good. Your husband sounds like mine: absolute meat and taters guy. The restaurant also has lobster tail, sea scallops, shrimp, Mahi Mahi, oysters on the half shell, and clams casino. It is definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!

@Hip Hip Hooray!, I am so glad you were able to get both hips done at once. Had I not been so darned stubborn I likely could have too. The very first Ortho I consulted about 5 years ago was planning on going that route. I waffled on the decision too long though and time ran too short before our next planned move. I find myself 'woulda, shoulda, coulda-ing' that sometimes, but realize that's a waste of time. It is what it is. I'm also glad I'm healing up and we'll see what the future holds. :)
Sitting comfortably was so nice. You can't really be sure what kind of chair you're going to get at any given place and some of them can be kind of uncomfortable. These were perfect though. High enough, comfortable, and I didn't have to worry about breaking my 90 degree restriction accidentally because it was positioned just right.
All in all, a wonderful evening.

I hope all of you are doing great! I'm sending out sunny thoughts for all my buddies.

Oh WOW! We have an Aberdeen Barn here....it's been here for eons...just never thought about going there. Now I will definitely have to try it out. My oldest grandson is one of the chefs at Bonefish grille...and I haven't been there either!

@Nana757, we really enjoy our Aberdeen Barn. It's not super fancy, but they know their way around steak and seafood. :)
I have seen the Bonefish Grille here as well and wanted to try it. That might be our next restaurant adventure.
I hope you're enjoying this lovely day.

okay, I peek in and suddenly I am starving! You are sounding good over there in VA.

Oh yes...the weather is absolutely perfect! While I'm not looking forward to the chilly weather this weekend, I am enjoying the fresh breezes coming through the house. I hear Bonefish has a shrimp appetizer, to die for. One day, I'll drag my hubby there!
How are you doing today?

Foooooood, chortle, you are truly on the right path when life's treats are solo enjoyed pain free or minimal nice one

Legin THR Sep 14

LOL, @CricketHip, it's a good bet a lot of my posts will have a mention of food. I love good food. :)
@Legin, you said a mouthful!
@Nana757, yeah, I think it's a must to try out Bonefish Grille. I love exploring new restaurants!
Today is 3 weeks since my surgery. I'm doing good. It's a little hard to track my progress since I can't walk on my op leg yet, but I am finding I'm getting a bit better range of motion when I do my exercises, so I consider that good.
For now, I'm just taking things day by day and looking forward to when I can take the next significant step forward (pun intended)

I hope you and all the other hippie buddies are well. :)

Chortle. You are wayy ahead of where I was, nice one

Deep, have you been tempted to bear a bit more weight on that leg? Like a quick test ?
I'm glad that you have your exercises and you can see that you're finding progress with those. It has to be hard, not to be able to mark your progress by how far you can walk, etc.

Hey @DeepBreath! I'm sitting here enjoying this cloudy, rainy day and catching up with everyone's progress. It sounds like your recovery is making great strides (no pun intended :) ), with your ROM, in particular. I know you didn't have ANY, pre op...so I know this has to make you ecstatic! I can't believe it's been 3 weeks already! It's only a few more days before you go back and get to check out your surgeons work, through the X-rays. I'll bet you can't wait. You are doing wonderful....keep it up girl!
