TKR Dawni has a knew knee

Day 9 I can go upstairs and down using one crutch, can shower and wash hair, I am taking paracetamol and ibuprofen every 6 hours the pain is bearable, and much better than my last TKR, I also take Amitriptyline at night this helps me sleep which is not to bad at the moment although I have to sleep on my back as I can only lay on my side for about 30 minutes, I have my staples out next Wednesday and then I start my physio I am having trouble lifting my leg up from a sitting position and leg raises are impossible I just can't do them [emoji22] my leg is still bruised and tight, my flexion is 90 and about 4 straight, all in all I feel really well considering. Hope you all are recovering well x

Dawni, that sounds very good for only 9 days post op. I wouldn't worry about not being able to do the leg raise, it will come as your muscles strengthen, your flexion is good, mine is only 75, but I had a lot of work done on my knee due to chronic inflammation. I think a lot of us are having trouble getting decent sleep. I used to take Amitriptyline for sleep, maybe it would help me now. I hope your staples come out easily and your recovery continues well.

@Tabbycat thank you, I have always had a sleep problem so I am on 3x10mg of Amitriptyline it really does help with the sleeping, I might wake up a few times to go to the loo but get back to sleep quite quick, I know it sounds daft but have you tried ear plugs not because of noise or in my case my hubby snoring but it seems to block out all white noise and I sleep a lot better for using them. I woke up yesterday morning with a few spots on my body I thought they were gnat bites by 4pm my eye was puffy and my lip had swollen I took am antihistamine and said I would give it till the morning, I woke up about 1 in the morning and the itching was really driving me to distraction, I phoned the hospital ward for advice fat lot of good they were they said what do you want us to do, I said well your the doctors you tell me, no help so I phoned 111 to be told I had to go to A&E ok on a Friday night and at that time it could be full of unsavoury people and a long wait max 6 hours, so they said that they would get an on call doctor phone me but this could be 1-6 hours so I thought well better in my own home waiting, but the doctor phoned me back in a short time, asked if I could drive to the on call doctors ok 10days out not a hope so she said she would give my husband a steroid tablet to pick up but to postpone taking it as long as I can but by 5am in the morning I had to take it I managed to get a bit of sleep but at 8am I was so uncomfortable and itching like mad I made an appointment at the on call doctors office for 9.30 they think it's a reaction to the build up in my body to the injections I have to administer for blood clotting I have not had this one before, so they have changed it to a different sort and a pill form. Then I was given a strong antihistamine, now a few hours on and the itching has stopped and the redness has decreased it was very scary and most uncomfortable....
BUT on a good note day 10 and I can now lift my knee up I raised it 3 times it felt so good to be able to eventually do this my muscular are waking up and I am in charge again.

That must have been so frightening! I'm glad you're feeling better now. Hooray for being able to raise your knee. It's another step forward on the road to recovery.

I'm glad they figured out what was wrong and that you are getting relief from your symptoms, you can do without more stress! Let's hope you can get back to concentrating on your recovery.

I'm glad the antihistamine worked, @Dawni .
Make sure that your GP and your surgeon's office know about your allergic reaction.

PS: The night staff on the surgical ward probably only consisted of a couple of nurses, with one doctor on duty to cover the whole hospital. Not surprised you got no help there.

Oh no it happend again this morning I took a steroid pill and a antehistamen after a few hours it went down but it drove me nuts with the itching, I am hopeing to get to see my doctor tomorrow and dreading taking the other pills I have 4 more to go,

The prednisone it sounds like you are allergic to some of the medicine you are taking. You a should try to get a hold of a doctor before taking any more. In the US we have doctors on call for each practice that we can get most of the time 24 hours a day. We don't call hospitals so that might be different in the UK.

@newlybionic we don't have that in the UK, the last words the ward at the hospital I was on said now call if you have any worries or if anything is wrong, as it's happened twice now it must be the drug I take to stop blood clots so will be phoning my doctor first thing in the morning.

Whew- so glad you are getting some relief from the itch madness Dawni. And congratulations on getting your staples out, hopefully without much discomfort! It's amazing how much of a boost having them out gave me mentally! We're getting there.. (recovered)!!

Thanks @CaliGirl & @Suz
Had the staples out some were in very deep and hurt a bit to get out so they have put strips on the knee and a small dressing which I can take off on Tuesday. Phoned physio and I can still go tomorrow as the wound is not open so all's looking good. X

I'm glad the staples are out. Make sure the therapist doesn't hurt you at all. Your on the next step of recovery.

Yippee, you're on the road to a normal knee! Take it slow and easy and pain-free PT!

Went for my 1st physio session today, they were very pleased with me my flex is 0 and my bend is 110 at 2 weeks. He asked me what I was doing there and was impressed with my progress and feels I can leave going untill 2 weeks time as he knows I am doing all I can at home, they said i only need one cruch. even the other people at the physio could not believe how well I am doing I said to them they must not compaire me with them we all progress at difrent times. I came out feeling very pleased with my self i am not glowting just happy.

I'm glad your staples are out, @Dawni .
Did you tell your surgeon about your itchy rash? It would be a good idea to let your GP's surgery know, so that it can be noted that you might have an allergy to the medication.

Be careful that your physiotherpy is gentle. your knee is doing so well, and it only needs very little formal exercise.

Hi @Dawni, Im watching your progress as your op was a day after mine.
Im trying not to compare but ......
