TKR Dawni has a knew knee

My experience is that after day four, they will want to get rid of you and will send you home no matter!! thank goodness for that. It is really stupid that you have to lift your leg up while sitting. If you can lift is standing, then functionally you will be fine. In the US, we have to go up and down stairs before discharge.

Hi @Dawni,
I don't know why they won't let you home until you can lift your foot when sitting down, I couldn't do that until I had been home about a week. I still can't do a straight leg raise, however hard I try. Have you tried crutches yet, once I could go up and down some steps, I was ok to go home though I needed the five days in because of my nausea issues. Is your pain well controlled, I hope it is.
Sending hugs,

Hi @Dawni
It took about 10 days before my thigh muscles started working again properly. They won't keep you in hospital that long.
If you feel you're doing OK in other respects, just tell them: "I want to go home now, so please arrange it."

Hi all @Celle I am happy with everything eles I am doing thank you fore your words.Tabbycat yes thank you my pain is well controlled and not to bad if it continues on this line I will be happy it dose not seem as painfull as my other leg, no @Tabbycat I have not tryed crutches yet hopfully today, as I can lift my leg when supported by the zimmer I am hopeing I cab do this with the crutches, I get into bed by using my good leg to lift my operated one

Good to hear they've got your pain controlled. Doesn't it feel good to be able to get in and out of bed by yourself? You should be able to go home soon.

You should live in the US--you would be out of the hospital for sure by now, no matter what. They are just too nice to you in the UK!!

Yay I am home did the steps in hospital with crutches still can't lift leg up when sitting but hope it will come, my leg was 100 bend and 5 straight they were impressed with that, brusing is comming out now and leg feels very tight, pain is well managed

Oh I'm so happy you are home and not in too much pain. I hope you get some rest tonight

Don't worry about lifting your leg while you're sitting down. It isn't necessary right now and it will come, as you heal.

True enough, just rest right now, you have great rom right now and it will only get better---you do not need to "work" on your rom. Rest and let your knee heal first.

Getting home is a huge psychological boost. Do not worry about being able to lift that leg while you are sitting. It will come on its own time and on its own terms. You are doing fine---just rest, ice, and elevate.

@Dawni
Home is the best, isn't it?I can't complain one bit about my treatment in hospital but nothing like those familiar 4 walls.
I'm just now about 130 days from my LTKR and about 114 from having a dislocated patella repaired on same.
I know without reading you've gotten wonderful advice here(but I read anyway :-) ),so I'll just say best wishes.
The leg lifts were the roughest for me too,but now I feel like I could high kick.
If it weren't for the other knee I might try ballet.Well, and no one wants to see me in tights LOL

Here's to a great recovery,
Dave

I have just dropped my leg, I am sitting in a orthopaedic chair with a foot stool the same hight as the chair, as I said I can't lift my operated leg when sitting yet so have to lift it off the stool, oh boy I dropped it it's like a lead wait it really hurt like mad, you don't appreciate what you have till you don't have it, this time around the pain is not as bad as it was with my RTKR but I had more movement in my legs, any one else have the same problem and when were you able to use the leg again. It's like frustrating I can get out of bed to use the bathroom at night by placing my good leg under my operated one and lifting it down but when getting back in to bed it's more difficult and some times have to ask my husband to get it back into bed. What exercises would help with this.

Hi Dawni
I can imagine how much that hurt :yikes:. It very, very early days yet though, and they say you can't compare knees. I still can't do a leg raise, though I managed to get my leg over the side of the bath for the first time two days ago. Have you got a leg lifter thingy? I use mine a lot at the moment.

If you don't have a leg lifter, a rolled up tower or a dog leash will help you get that pesky leg into bed. Your quad muscles are just being a little slow to recover from the surgery---no problem, they will get over it and start working again!!! Until then, roll up a bath towel so that you don't drop that leg again.

Dawni, don't worry about not being able to lift your leg yet. It will happen. Sometimes it just takes a little time. I think it was about 10 days before i could do it.

Thank you @skigirl and @Celle I am now using a dressing gown cord and it's much easier pluss I don't have to wake hubby up, or rely on him to lift the leg for me this recovery is very frustrating, I can't believe the difference in my 2 knees recovery, I know at difrent tims but they were don by the same sergan, this new knee is definitely the stubborn one and it feels independent from the rest of my boddy.

It is possible that your second knee needed more work on it during surgery. That could easily account for the difference. It will still be all right in the end - it will just do things a bit differently and may be on a slightly different schedule. Try not to compare the knees, because this knee is on its own journey.

My two knees were completely different too---it is like your kids---same mother and father, but totally different personalities!!
