I Googled it and all I got was a food shop! broken link removed: https://www.musclepro.com/

Lynne, I've done a little studying on this and think both you a could be right! It's certainly not a trochanteric bursitis and neither do I think it's an ITB band issue because you're too focused on one spot.

Blue circles - hip joint
Red circle - trochanteric bursa
Yellow circle - site of pain

The OS said that if it still hurts or even bothers me by the next appointment, he would look into it.
I'm scheduled to see him sometime in December so I have plenty of time to figure out what triggers
the pain and what eases it.

Maybe an edge of a wire is pressing on something when you move just the right way. That makes sense to me. Ouch!

Hope you get it resolved. You've been through enough!

Dorothy

Thanks! I hope to get it resolved as well but the only way I see it is either I get used to it or have it
removed. That's something that I REALLY don't want to do. I've had enough surgeries!.
I have 3 scars on the side of my leg. There's the short one from the Anterior approach that is about 4 inches long, next to it is my original scar from 1980 that is about 7 inches long and next to that one is from all the wires and the strut graft that is about 15 inches long. Last weekend when I had the opportunity to put on my bathing suit, I looked in the mirror and it surely looked like Freddy Kruger was here!!! It looks perfectly like claw marks!!!!!! LOL!

Removing such a wire usually only requires a 2-4" incision over the spot and shouldn't take more than 10-20 mins.

I would go with getting it removed if that is your OS's final decision..

I will have to wait until December when I go back for a check up. He didn't want
to investigate it yet as he said that things are going to pop up but they will also
disappear as fast as they came. If it still is bothering me in December, he will
look into it. I could probably wear a hole right through by then. Each day
it feels like it's digging deeper into the surrounding tissues.

Like Rosanne Rosannadanna said, "It's always something!"

Lynne, although I agree with your surgeon's advice somewhat, I think your situation is a little different from most of us with the average hip replacement. You've had a lot of complications and this does sound like it could be a wire, which isn't likely to get better on its own. Your surgeon might not understand the full extent of what you are going through with this particular issue. If I were in your shoes, I think I would contact him soon, explain specifically what is going on like you have here, nad ask him to see you before December and check into this.

Dorothy

Dorothy, thank you for the great advise. I am just so accepting of all that has happened, I didn't even THINK about making an appointment to get it checked sooner. Accepting might be the wrong word....resigned is a better description. The OS did tell me that he wants to keep a very close eye on me and I was the one that decided not to see him until December. He said that he would like to see me again as soon as a month but his office is a 2 hour ride from my house so what I've been doing is getting a morning appointment, like around 9 or 10 and just going down to Phoenix the night before. My boyfriend and I usually just take a hotel and relax that evening before the appointment. He has a standing appointment with his allergist for his allergy shots at 8 AM, Monday mornings so works out great when we go down the night before.
I will give my leg another week or so and if it still hurts, I will make an appointment to see him sooner.

Josephine, what I meant was the aches and pains that will surface only to go away as fast as they came. It's what you called settling in.

Ah, I see - I think. I know some surgeons set a bit of store by that saying!

Hi Lynn, just catching up on you,
I can see where you are just used to pain so you probably have a high tolerance. Of course you are the only one who knows your situation intimately, but don't put up with more than you have to, especially since your surgeon wants to keep close tabs on you.

So you are familiar with beautiful New England falls huh? They really are something. My SO family is in AZ so we go there often. Where are you located, if you don't mind my asking.

Hope you get this pain sorted out soon, Cathy

Cathy, I spent the first 25 years of my life in New England, Lynn, Mass to be exact. I moved to Arizona many years ago. First I was outside of Phoenix in Tempe, Mesa and Gilbert but after I was widowed, I didn't want to raise the kids there by myself. There was too much crime so I moved to Prescott. Prescott is halfway between Flagstaff and Phoenix. I've been here since 1999. I'm hoping in the next few years, after my youngest graduates high school, to move to Lake Havasu on the Colorado River. It's gorgeous there!!!! And it's nice and warm too!

Where does your SO's family live?
It would be wonderful to meet another BoneSmartie!

Yes, I know where Prescott is. It has changed some over the years as mom in law has passed, so now family is in Flag and Goodyear, outside of Phoeinix. Used to be the perfect trip. We would fly into Phoeinix, visit mom, drive to Sedona(love it there)have a few days to ourselves, on to Flag for dad and brother, then the canyon for another few days to ourselves and then reverse but usually quicker. I simply love Arizona. Her family moved there when she was 13 so she only lived there till college. The Grand Canyon was one of those places as a child I always wanted to go. When I finally saw it at 18 I knew I had to come back to hike it, which I did. Nothing like being at the bottom looking up. I never tire of seeing it. It is one of those places for me where I truly feel one with the earth. Now that Cheryl's dad is older, she mostly wants to just be with him when we go so sometimes so I just go up to the canyon for a day or two by myself. It s almost like I can't go out there without taking another look haha. We are heading in diff directions end of month, she to AZ and me to WI to see my mom, but are thinking of going back together in Feb. You can be sure I will let you know if I come. Instead of doing the same things I have been trying to branch out a bit. Last time went to Jerome-cute town. I really want to go to the dessert bar in Parker AZ. My brother in WI met the guy who owns it. I am sure you have heard about it living where you do. I love those unusual type of things.

Ok, enough about AZ. Hope that pain of yours is settling down and if not, you are considering seeing your doc sooner. Maybe knowing from Josephine that taking a wire out is a much smaller surgery helps. You deserve some releif girl, take care, cathy

I have never heard of the Desert Bar in Parker but I did google it. It sure looks interesting! If you should make it out this way, we will definitely have to visit it. Jerome is really interesting. I pass through it on my way to Cottonwood frequently. We have stopped there many times as well. It's a very interesting place!
I think I will give it another week or so and it my wire is still bothering me, I will surely call the doctor and let him know.
I hope everything is going well for you.

I thought I was doing well in my recovery but had the opportunity to observe myself walking while looking in a mirror. I thought I was walking without a limp while using the cane but that reflection doesn't lie. I am still limping. I have been using the cane for a couple of months now and refuse to go back to the walker. I know my glutes are the weakest muscles and they need work. What is the best exercise to work the glutes?

Hi Lynne

How about I tag Alex our absolute guru regarding the types of exercises to target with certain muscle groups alexthecat;

I don't do a great deal of specific exercises, just concentrate on my NW and general living tasks, stretching etc.. For me with 3 discs that keep popping out, my approach works for me.

I also find as I expand my NW routes, I am walking different terrain and not sticking to the flat.

For example at out coast house, we have what we call 'the killer hill' driveway road.. and walking up and down it wakes up lots of different muscle groups. Also our block is over half an acre and one has to be a mountain goat to go up and down it!

I often think, how come, my lower tummy muscles are so sore - ah yes, they would have got used on the steep walks..

Hi Lynne, sorry to hear you feel you are still limping, that is a bummer isn't it. I am too but am working hard to concentrate on walking more even.

I'm sure Alex will be along shortly to advise but for now I would suggest clamshells, making sure you keep your body straight and try to use your hip muscles rather than your back when doing them. Also the bridge......lie on floor, knees bent and slowly lift your pelvis so your body is straight, hold then slowly back down. Clench your glutes whilst dong this. Lunges and wall squats using an exercise ball are good too.

Good luck, take it slowly, it takes a while but it is worth it

Take care

Ann

Thank you! I will add those exercises to my list. I am already doing the clam shells. You mention an exercise ball, can you explain? Is it like a tennis ball or larger? How would you use it?
