Thank you all! I went to my primary doctor yesterday due a headache I'd had for 3 days. I thought I was coming down with a sinus infection. Turned out my B/P was high at 160/90 taken twice with a wait between. She ordered Atenolol and to come back in 2 weeks.
Last night had awful indigestion, still today but it's working its way through. But last night b/p was even higher so I was pretty nervous. This am was down to 130/80 which is high for me but doesn't make me worry.
No pain left knee for 2 days now and hardly any pain in my TKR knee. Can't believe this. Was miserable on Thursday, damp and cold. Then Fri. am woke up to sun and warmth, but then the weather went to cold and some rain but still both knees are what any of us would consider divine.
Anyway asked my dr. about the prophy AB so she said don't worry I will take care of it. She wrote the RX and gave it enough refills to carry me through.
I was upset about the awful shooting yesterday. And had had a quick and exciting lunch with girlfriends who I work with so we had to chatter quickly, eat quickly. Mexican food, not my choice. Hence the indigestion. Tummy hasn't been that great since my surgery so I should have just had a salad, but had chili relleno and this place is really greasy.
Still taking it easy for OS orders and extra easy what with my b/p. Have to admit the headache disappeared after I took the Atenolol. Not sure what happened to cause this. Got thinking about all the Tylenol and Celebrex you girls have discussed. So thank goodness haven't needed any pain meds in 2 days. Think I should stop the Celebrex ladies?

Randi I hadn't seen your posts when I wrote above. Started my post last night but wasn't feeling good enough to finish. Well, when I saw my super xrays and thought about how the other consultants hadn't been concerned with the tumors in my knee before doing the TKR (they would have drilled through it and another thing called a Geod.). One wanted to do a partial which I feel sure would have been a mistake especially after reading on here where so many come back in just a few years. So I am trying to separate out the personality thing. My Primary doctor looked at my knee and watched me walk and said, you have an excellent result there. Remember my OS had been very rude to her over the phone. And she even said she would stick with him for knee #2. We both liked that he did start treatment on knee #2 so I am looking at it day by day. He knows alot about arthritis. When I asked for him to sent in the fluid from my knee, he was irritated that I was telling him what to order so I reminded him that my previous doctor when I asked him to send it in for cell counts sent it in for culture only which is not needed. Haven't cancelled my other appointment so I am keeping my options open. I cancelled at the last minute with another OS at Hoag so I'm not above it!

Marianne what are the side effects from Celebrex. Ive heard so many conflicting things. How good it is for arthritis, takes most of the pain away, then others saying they have been taking it for a while. and others who say you can only take it short term because of the bad side effects. Just interested to find out as much as I can about it for future reference.
 
Hi Marianne - somehow missed this thread of yours! I am glad you got some positive response from your OS; yet keeping your options open sounds wise (in case you just got him on a good day!! lol).

Your fluid story brought back memories from when I was getting synvisc regularly. The last time, for each of the injections, she had to withdraw 4 large vials of fluid from my right knee each time before injecting me! Nothing interesting cultured form them, fortunately, but it was interesting how much can build up in that little space! Not as much production then from the left, though looking at it now, I daresay the results would be different!. Like you, the relief was immediate for me as well. I am thrilled you have gotten some relief! :reindeers:
On the condom ABs ( :rotfl:), after both my hips and this first knee, I was told to take 4, 1 hour before dental appts. for about 2 years. After that, my dentist said it was no longer necessary. I've not been advised about needing them for other procedures, but my OS did say that any infection will go straight to the knee. So now I am curious, oh wise BoneSmart community. :shrug:
 
Well I read different things in the literature from the doctors I interviewed. Mine goes with the FOREVER on condom ABs.
No I am going back and change that and call them prophy ABs because I am the type of person who will get that in my head and say it to the wrong person!!! Like MY OS! Can you imagine say that to Dr. No-nonsense.
I've had no pain for 2 days. This really wild. The atenolol made me feel tired plus I am supposed to be taking it easy for left knee. But it is so divine not reaching for my pain meds! I wonder how long this will last. It's just crazy to get up and walk kind of peppy not thinking about heel-toe. I realize the cortisone will wear off so I'm going to try to remember my gait!
Your guy cut your quads too didn't he? Or did he push them aside? You had the moon incision so maybe?
 
Yippee on the no pain. You've earned that relief!! :kittykiss: Oh, and good point on calling the ABs what they are - I'll watch my tongue in the future - it just tickled me so much!
No, Peneberg is an MIS OS - no quad cuts and the patella moved aside; I do have the moon incision.
 
In my last followup my OS said he had a patient who faithfully took antibiotics before his dental appt. for 8 years after TKR and then did not take it for the most recent visit and he developed an infection in the joint and he will be having a revision. So he told me to plan on taking them for the rest of my life. I figure a small price to pay to avoid an infection!

I see on Klapper's website that he does the quad sparing as well. I'm going to keep my appointment with him but move it to a more convenient date. Being head of the department has to be important as well.
 
There does seem to be a lot of controversy about the antibiotic use although my dentist concurred with my OS. Since it is just one dose before the appt. and I go 3 times a year, it just seems like a no brainer to me.

And I think you are right on Klapper. If my meds don't make me too foggy this week, I'll see if I can get any feedback on him while I'm hanging out at Cedars!
 
Haven't posted on here for a bit. On the 13th I got a cortisone injection in my left knee. Immediate pain relief that lasted until the 23rd. Even my tkr knee was relieved of any pain. But then the 23rd it all came back with a vengeance. Unsteady walking now due to pain left knee. I am worried because I am going back to work on the 7th. I don't know how I will get through a day. I can work 4 days a week. The problem isn't my tkr knee because it will continue to heal but the other one is worse than my right one ever was before the surgery. Also went to Irvine Wetlands with my Dad, used crutches, but then got lost and am even more sore now. I know that was dumb to do that but these were plans made before my cortisone wore off and he's 95 so didn't want to disappoint. So now trying to take it easy. I go for a Synvisc injection a week from Monday. ACCCH ARRGH DRAT!!!!
Good news is that my daughter hunted it down and gave me Builders Tea!!!! Yeah!
 
Good to see you Marianne, sorry your left knee is giving you so much grief. Do you wish now you would have had both of them done? I hope the Synvisc injection will help your knee. I know I had two of them (7 months apart) in my non-op knee and now it is fine, I am not dealing with anything with that knee now.
 
Marianne sorry to hear your so called good knee is giving you more trouble. Thought I had missed you posting for a while. Do you think they will bring the TKR for your other knee forward now and do you think you would be able to cope with it all again. Steriod injections over here are givien very sparingly. Once I had three in my left knee they wouldnt give me any more. Thankfully my right knee is improving since the LTKR probably because its not doing the work of two knees. When I am exercising Im doing both knees and it does feel as tho it is getting stronger. Good luck with your next appt but it does seem a while off. Is there nothing you can do in the mean time. Its not fair is it you are suffering so much with that knee when your operated one is improving really well.

I was thinking about you last night! I figured I would look up your thread this morning. I totally understand about the walk with your dad. I would have done the same. But now you will have to play catch up, ice up and hope it gets better. Synvisc didn't do anything for me. My sense is that if you're bone on bone it's not very effective. Are you hoping to get the other knee done in the summer break? That's when all the teachers get their knees done! :dancy: I know your knee is nice and straight and that you're thinking about staying with your mean doctor but I am starting to think from looking on this forum, that the quality of the doctor has a lot to do with the amount of suffering after. Of course there are a lot of factors that play into that besides the doctor. Just don't wait too long, honey.
