Fractured Neck of Femur/Pinning Broke head of Femur in January 2020

Sorry to hear you're having problems with pain. Have you tried icing and elevating today to see if that helps? Did you maybe do something new that might have irritated your hip?

Laying on your side, even if it's not the operated side can sometimes irritate the muscles and tendons, kind of pulls them. I know that using pillows between your knees when sleeping on your side can really take some of the pain and tension away.

If you try the above and don't notice an improvement you might want to reach out to your surgeon's office.

A quick update on my hip pinning. I’m now roughly 5 1/2 months post op and things were getting better. I could do more things and thought great I’m improving. I had so much trouble bending my leg but now I can bend it a lot more not quite enough to put a sock on but nearly there. Trouble is I have really good periods where I can see improvement but then for no reason at all I start to get pain again and now it’s right up the top of my leg from where they cut me all around to the inner thigh. The pelvic bone that sticks out get pain as well. Some of the pain I can tell it’s muscle but I also get like electric shock pain. I phoned my consultant and he wants to see me next week for face to face consultation which I haven’t had since the coronavirus started but I have had X-rays and everything seemed ok. I just don’t understand why the pain keeps coming back as I’ve heard people start recovering well then all of a sudden it fails and this scares me. Even my swelling in foot and ankle was getting better but now that’s started again. I guess I’m just terrified that my hip pinning is going to fail and I will need a FHR but how can you tell if it’s failed or if it’s just normal muscle pains. My consultant only checks my rod and screws on an X-ray how can he tell if the muscle and nerves are ok as it does feel like I have a trapped nerve. I so wish I could turn back time and not had my fall as my hip has caused me so much stress and on top of all this my poor Son who has been having chemo and radiotherapy to shrink his tumour has now been told they will operate on 1st July to remove the tumour but he will have to have a permanent Stoma. This has devastated him as he didn’t expect this so I’m trying to support him and deal my hip. I’m at my wits end now and feel so sad.

Oh, I am so sorry. You have so much going on and it’s difficult to sort all of this out and deal with what’s going on with your son. Don’t forget to reach out to your friends (besides us, of course :)) to have them support you. Also make sure your care team knows what you’re up against. Stress does not help your body’s immune system or healing activity. I know we sound like a broken record but I would try icing and elevating again. I still do that even now when I get sore spots and swelling. Helps every time. Prayers for comfort, peace, and strength. You still need to be patient and kind to yourself. Keep us posted. ❤️ Pat

Sorry to hear you're having pain again but happy you're getting to see your consultant in person. Maybe write down some of the symptoms you've been having so you don't forget when you get there. Had that happen to me, things that had been bothering me went into hiding when I saw the doc so forgot to bring it up. :) :-) (: Please keep us posted with what you find out.

Sorry to hear about your son's problems as well, they is definitely adding to your stress.

Prayers for comfort, peace of mind and healing for both you and your son. Trying times indeed, but I’m sure all will work out for the best in the end.
Big hugs. :console2: We’re here for you.

It’s been nearly 11 months since I had my hip pinned and all was going ok apart from not regaining the strength back in my upper leg. But the last 2 days I’ve been in terrible pain not whilst walking but if I’m sitting an lean on my operated hip. It sends a shooting pain which makes me screech. I am hoping this is a pulled muscle as they are very weak due to being disabled but I keep wondering if I’ve done something to my hip. I haven’t fallen or anything like that so does anyone know what could be causing this pain.
Thanks Mandie

I broke my hip back in January 2020 and my consultant has said that it’s healed nicely but I’m still having pain in top of leg from buttock to hip. I was already disabled with mobility problems before I fell but since breaking my hip i am unable to do hardly anything anymore. I have no flexibility in my leg and it feels so heavy.

I can no longer mange household chores, Stand without holding onto a Rollator, Get if seats especially the toilet plus many other things. I feel my life is over as when I go out which is rare now if I need to use the disabled toilet I don’t think I would be able to to safely get out of my wheelchair and turn to use the toilet.

I loved going abroad but now I wouldn’t be able to get out the seat. If I fell there’s no way I could get back up as I have strength in the leg.
It’s really getting me down as all I do each day is sit in a chair now. I just about manage to make a cup of Tea and get to the loo thanks to my stairlift and toilet lift but this is my life now.

My husband is having to retire end of this month to become my full time carer. I just hope we can manage financially. My mental health has really got bad and I’ve cried so many times as I feel a burden and I just want to be able to move around more safely. Im not living a life anymore im just existing day to to day. Im sorry for the long post but I never thought my life would be like this.

Sorry to hear how limited your life has become. Sounds like you and your husband are managing with the assistive devices you have obtained.
What does your consultant say about how debilitated you have become?

Have you thought about obtaining a second opinion? A new set of eyes may be helpful.

How can I find my threads and posts?

I had my hip pinned back in January 2020. I had mobility problems before and used a Walker indoors and a wheelchair outside. I coped really well with everyday life and chores but since my pinning I have been left unable to do anything. My hip has no flexibility at all. It feels heavy at the top and I’m getting sharp pain in top and side of hip. I’ve seen my consultant many times and he just said everything is fine. Anyway I have just been to see him again as something is definitely not right. He took more X-rays and said the top pin is to long. He has suggested having all the metalwork removed but there are no guarantees it will stop the pain or even be able to remove. I’m stuck in knowing what to do as I have poor mobility and as there will be holes left in m6 bone my leg will be weaker so possibly more risk of fracture if I fall. I am so stuck and just wondered if anyone had there metalwork removed and how did it go for you.

@Mandie4711 Can you ask your GP for a referral for a second opinion? Has the surgeon ever suggested a hip replacement? I think you need to see someone who might explore more options for you.
