Fractured Neck of Femur/Pinning Broke head of Femur in January 2020

I really dont know whats going on with my hip but as the weeks go by somethings improve and others get worse. Its now 12 weeks and im getting more muscle pain and pain right at the top of where my hip was pinned. If i gently push into the groin area towards top of hip it hurts. My appointment to see my consultant has been cancelled due to this virus so im worrying that as these pains continue does that mean im not healing. It is so worrying as i think things are wrong but at the same time i think its the healing process as swelling goes down the muscles are contracting more. I have just started to sleep on my side so whether changing positions is pulling different muscles. I just wish i knew when things will get better as yes im a worrier but with out anyone to talk too i feel so alone.

Hello Mandie, I’m sorry you’re worried and that you’re feeling alone, especially these days.
You can always stop by here for company and amongst other things you’re finding to do to fill your time, check out our Social Room as a distraction when you’re bored -

There is also a thread on COVID-19 which has some info and lighthearted humor to put a smile on your face - https://bonesmart.org/forum/categories/covid-19.149/

I’m wondering if the reason for the migrating discomfort has to do with your activity level?
As tempting as it is, try not to ”push” on the area you described you’re testing for pain periodically. Concentrate on icing several times per day, for no less than 45 minutes each time. Also, while side sleeping, place a pillow in between your legs so the hip you’re not lying on, isn’t falling into the other. See if that helps. Are you able to talk with your consultant over the phone to express your concerns and hopefully receive some reassurance? Try to arrange that if possible.

Take care and stay well! We’re here for you. :)

Hello
Stopping by to wish you a Happy Three Month Anniversary.
I hope your days are feeling brighter. Don’t forget, we’re here if you need us.
Best Wishes for a peaceful week. :)

Hi,
Me again as today I’m 14 weeks post op on my hip pinning. Things have been improving in the hip, groin area but now I’m having bad Knee pain. I’m wearing a knee support thing and just tried cooling gel but pain still bad and the swelling in my lower leg, ankle and foot is still troubling me. At 14 weeks I would have thought the swelling would have stopped now and as the weeks pass I seem to get new pains like my knee. I’m finding it difficult to understand and cope with as already disabled with limited mobility this is making my life so much harder. I can’t ask my consultant as my appointment was cancelled due to coronavirus and I don’t have a telephone number as he wasn’t going to be checking up on me at all after my surgery but I did manage to email a wrong department who kindly forwarded my email to him and was supposed to have check ups and xrays every 6 weeks but now I’m stuck and don’t know what to do. It’s like one step forward 5 steps back with my recovery and I’m starting to think I will never get better as I can’t put a sock on and I can’t even use a normal toilet as it’s too low so I’m still using the raised toilet so I’m feeling useless now even though I try my best.

It is not unusual to have swelling at your stage. Ice any area that is swollen. Still lots of healing going on.

What is your activity level? Are you doing any exercises?

My activity level is low as have no balance and use a rollator as I have very bad mobility. I try to walk as much as I can and do a few leg raises but that’s about all I can do.

As you move through recovery, progress can start to seem slower. It has to be measured in months, rather than days or weeks. Do you feel like you're doing better now than you were a month ago?

In certain aspects yes as I walk a bit quicker and managing other small things but pain wise I was doing much better until this week where pain in my knee and top of hip is more painful. I get very sharp twinges in hip but the knee is the worst. I worry the screws or plate have moved so was desperate for my x-ray but haven’t heard back from them. It may be muscle pains but as this is all new to me I always think the worse.

I had pain in my knee after hip fracture too. My physiotherapist said that it was actually pain that was referred from my hip. He suggested icing my hip to try to control the knee pain and that helped a lot.

Thanks I will give that a go see if it helps me. How long did it take you to stop getting all these different pains and for swelling to stop as I know we are all different but would be nice to have some idea from someone who’s experienced this .

As I recall, it took about four months before I really turned the corner with that recovery. My pinning ultimately did fail a few months later though.

Ohh not good and so sorry it failed. How did you know it had failed ? I’ve spoken to my consultants secretary today asking about having an X-ray just to put my mind at rest. But scared of going to hospital though with this virus

I had a huge increase in pain when my pinning failed. It was quite clear that something had gone very wrong with that hip.

I’m surprised that after that amount of months it failed. I have read about this and I think that’s what concerns me as don’t want to go through another operation. You think everything is going ok then when you get more pains you start to worry. Hopefully with regular X-rays things will be spotted early if something is going wrong but like I said this. Coronavirus has put a stop to non urgent appointments. Hope you are staying safe and well.

Hi @Mandie4711,

Like you, I also fell (on 15 January) and fractured my hip and had metal rods placed. I just wanted to reassure you that you're not alone and that a lot of the pain you are having is probably quite normal. I too still have swelling and odd pain in my knee, which wasn't affected by my fall. I think it's natural to be a bit anxious and I'm sure most of us in this situation worried about the possibility of AVN. But, I wanted to let you know, just from my own experience, that much of the discomfort and pain you are having, I share as well; still having quite of bit of pain in my hip, which occasionally radiates to my groin and into my buttock, knee pain, discomfort and pain walking, limping, etc. I also notice when I take my sock off, there is an indentation, which indicates my leg is still swelling.

While nothing is ever guaranteed, I think it's all part of the healing process. I know it's hard to sometimes take a deep breath and relax when you have been going through this so long, but try to focus more on the progress you've made. Think back to the day of your accident and where you are now. While it may seem like a slow journey, you're on track!

Take care,
Eivar

:hi: Hi @Mandie4711
Wondering how you’re doing since we last heard from you...is the pain easing at all?
Hopefully icing has helped. It’s a special day...your four month anniversary. Hope it’s a happy one. With any luck you’re feeling better and enjoying a lovely Tuesday in your neck of the woods.
Take Care! :)

Hi Layla
Yes it’s 4 months now and feeling a lot better thanks. I still get pains in and around top of leg mainly now where they cut me open. I still can’t lift my leg much so not able to put a sock or shoe on but I’m hoping this is just where the muscles are weak and in the next weeks or months I will regain the strength in the leg. I had some X-rays 2 weeks ago and my consultant said everything looks good and healing well but as I can’t see him face to face due to the virus I couldn’t ask him about the weakness in my leg. I’m still getting a lot of swelling in ankle and foot but the rest of the swelling has gone now. I’m having more X-rays in 6 weeks and hopefully things will have improved then if the virus is under control I will be seeing my consultant. I do feel I’m getting better but I also worry why I can’t lift my leg up but as I’m disabled maybe I will never regain this function .

@Mandie4711 Muscles and soft tissues around the hip joint were traumatised. It does take time for all this to ease. Please don't worry - you will get your strength back. For now, let that hip continue to heal. What seems impossible one day will be easy the next.

I don’t know what’s happening to my hip as I’m now almost 5 months post op and X-rays show it’s healing well but today I have really bad pain all around the top of my leg. Things have been improving and my consultant said he is happy with my progress. I just can’t understand why today things have changed. I know that sometimes I will sleep on my side and rest my bad leg over my good leg but I think last night my bad leg was behind other leg. I was so tired I can’t remember but usually after sleeping on my side ( I’ve never slept on my operated side as scared to ) I end upon my back again so could I have just made the muscles hurt. Surely lying on your side shouldn’t cause the muscles to cause pain though. I feel so confused as I was doing really well and just can’t see what’s gone wrong. I go to bed ok then I woke up with pain. Really scaring me but just sleeping can’t have caused problems with the metal rod and pins. Hopefully tomorrow the pain will be easier but I’m scared to go to sleep now or lay on my side. I never knew a broken hip could cause so much pain and stress.
