BossK's recovery thread

Glad to hear your trip was a success. I also noticed people were oblivious to me, but they seemed oblivious to most of their surroundings as well. Everyone was checking fast pass availability on their phones. There were a couple near misses for sure!

I rented a scooter just for a coupIe hours at disney springs and it was very scary how few people, noticed me. And it wasn't even that crowded.

I found that this experience made me even more thoughtful of those who are always in wheelchairs or scooters due to a handicap. I've read these individuals feel invisible and unnoticed, so I've tried to make a conscious effort to make eye contact when passing anyone in that situation.

I noticed the same thing about being invisible when I was in the scooter shopping yesterday. At least with a cane, people normally will move. They didn't with the scooter yesterday. @KarriB, you are exactly right. Being on this side of a handicap makes you see it from their eyes. I will also try and be more aware and kinder to them.

@BossK, you are doing exceptionally! Wow, and all that walking so soon after your tkr! You have always been an inspiration and continue to be so!

Aw, thanks, @sistersinhim! I definitely have a new respect for people who are confined to scooters and wheelchairs too. I found myself doing exactly what @KarriB said in that I try to make eye contact and smile at the people who I know are permanently in this kind of situation. So I officially joined the ODIC yesterday, when I got the brilliant idea to stop and check out a Boot Camp in the park. I did as much as I could, which thankfully was mostly arms, but I definitely am taking it easy today. I am just desperate to get my muscle tone back, however I think I'm also fighting the effects of post menopause in that respect. So I found muscles I thought I'd lost permanently!! The IT band has fortunately loosened up, but I feel stiffness in both new knees from trying just to do the exercises that my PT recommended, but doing more reps. At least I met some nice new lady friends, as they are hard to come by in my neighborhood, especially when you keep teacher hours. :-)

It's always nice to meet new people we can relate to.
You are so your to have gone through menopause. Did you have surgery? We definitely lose muscle mass after menopause, but my new knee was getting stronger than it had been in years, before my fall two weeks ago. So, we can get some of it back, and you will get yours back!
How are the knees after the Boot Camp?

Knees aren't terrible! I actually think the swelling reduced a bit from the exercise, which makes no sense. I iced a bunch, and used arnica gel to make sure the swelling was under control. Today I had my first reiki session so I can increase my self-healing practices.
I did not have a surgery that prompted the menopause. My family goes through it young, and I was sort of launched into it with IUD problems after I had my daughter.
I am so saddened to hear of your fall! What happened,@sistersinhim?

Boot camp? :scaredycat:

I couldn't even begin to try that! Glad the knee liked it though!

But I bet it felt great! The few times I've swam laps (arms only), it felt great to get my heart rate up and feel real exertion.

New question, if anyone can answer? I'm getting some serious pain from the varicose veins on my newest knee. The OS office says do not get them treated yet, but they hurt! Has anyone ever heard of varicose veins becoming a problem after TKR?

I've read your recovery... congrats on a great recovery!
I'd love to hear more of this arnica gel you mentioned...what is it?
Thanks

It's only about 6 weeks since your surgery and I'm wondering if the varicose veins have been made more irritated because of the general bruising and swelling. If that's so, they may settle down a bit again.
I think your surgeon is right to suggest you wait a while.

Elevating your leg as much as you can should help to decrease the enlargement of your varicose veins, as well as helping your knee.

Hello, @BrokenMaMa! My second recovery has been much better than my first, though I was told the opposite would happen. I decided, "Not if I can help it!"
Arnica is an herb, but you can find the gel in most grocery stores. It reduces swelling and bruising, and it feels so good if you store it in the 'fridge before putting it on. It is not for open wounds, so be sure not to get it near your incision. I had a ton of lower leg bruising this time, so I used it there before I was cleared to apply topicals to the actual knee.

Thanks! Sounds similar to the icy hot I use but natural! I love tiger balm but the family prefers I don't use it due to the smell. It is blissful when you first put it on! Anyway, I was curious if it would aid in the tightness....help it feel looser or something?

It is supposed to help with muscle tightness, so I use it for that and massage it in well. There are also a number of natural products is that help crate that icy hot feeling, and smell better! The Internet has been very helpful in determining oils to use for this or that.

I had my first public speaking engagement yesterday in a very long time, and it felt so good getting back in the saddle!! Now my legs were exhausted from standing for so long, so much so I needed a little pain help when I got home. But what a great feeling!!

Yay, back in that saddle again! Good for you. Now, you have earned yourself a day of rest!

So what did you do to prep for a better experience the second time around? I'm taking notes.
