Good for you... Sounds like you are on track for few days post.. Rest, elevate, ice and meds.. That is your mantra for now :)

vilebyrd, nice to hear from you. I also had the posterior, my Dr. dosen't believe in the others. I saw my incision the first time yesterday and it measured 6" and has 15 staples. I am still taking percoset, 2 tablets every 4 hrs. The only issue i am having with them is bowel movements. They also said taking a stool softner with them would help greatly. I understand most pain meds cause constipation. I am mostly using a cane because i have 14 stairs to go up and down and it gets to be a hassle keeping both with you. The PT said yesterday i was doing great with the cane. Lets keep moving forward !!!!

Merry Christmas to my fellow hipsters. I am curious if many of you had issues with constipation. Most everything i have read says that most pain meds will do this. I currently am taking 1 norac every 6 hrs. (4 per day) for the little pain i have left. I am also taking 2 Dolcolax tablets a day. I finally am having 1 bowel movement a day but it seems to be rough going. Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The home nurse yesterday told me to up my stool softner to 3 per day. I have also seen some of the remedies from others on this site that i may try......

Oh! yes, badgerfan, constipation is the 800 pound gorilla in the room that we try not to talk about---but with hip and knee replacement and the length of time we have to stay on pain meds, it has to be dealt with.

You could add Miralax to the mix---it helps draw water into the intestinal track and makes going easier. You just have to try various things and find the right recipe for you. But you are not suffering alone, I can assure you.

I know exactly what you mean. You have my complete sympathy. My hubby who had both knees replaced the end of Sept. also knows exactly where you're coming from. Just one of the indignities visited on us---but the end result will make it all worthwhile.

Im walking around the house without cane some. The PT told me to. Anyway tonight my new muscle pain is in my outer thigh and some deep bone pain maybe Its also deep under my backside where i sit. None of this compares to ths the joint pain though. GOOD NEWS i slept on my stomach today wow it was so nice. Ive had constipation for yearz due to the meds. I used a enema the night the before the surgery wow im not constipated anymore. Lol i also mix fiber one cereal in with other cereals. These pains worry me sometimes that something is wrong in there but i think everyone has that problem. Man its still hard to beleive in a few more weeks we will be walking like normal people. Hippy holidays my friends

I also am just using a cane, in fact sometimes i will get something in one room and forget where i left it. I can tell tonite i over did it today, plus i missed my afternoon nap with family being around. I go Thursday and get my staples out. The home nurse released me yesterday and said there is no reason for her to see me anymore. I have one more in home PT session on Fri. and hopefully can start therapy in clinic next week....

badgerfan, yes. I had constipation the first week home. I took Metamucil 3 times a day, but things wouldn't budge, I got someone to pick me up some heavy duty suppositories, like they used in the hospital, but the Metamucil came through in the nick of time. The other problem I had was having to urinate every hour through the night. I didn't have to set an alarm for my pain meds!

Hi badger

It is easy to overdo it sometimes, just go back to the mantra, rest, elevate, ice (for pain/swelling) and take your prescribed meds..

Great that you are getting your staples out, that is a milestone :) also, forgetting where you have left your cane.. Just be careful that you don't acquire a limp though .. Good for you :)

The Mayo Clinic suggests having one probiotic yoghurt drink per day, starting a few weeks before surgery. I used that with a combination of stool softeners and a liquid called Lactulose. It is OTC but you have to ask at the counter for it. For those moments requiring dynamite, just use an OTC suppository...it will get things moving.

Hi - I'm fairly new here but recently had my second hip replacement three weeks ago. I used dulcolax - the stool softener - but was also told to get some sennekot in case I needed something stronger. I believe that the sennekot acts more like a laxative. It worked fine for me and wasn't unpleasant, and as soon as I got my pain meds down to about three per day, the problem resolved itself.

Hey, badgerfan, you fellows hit a home run with your new coach. Andersen will do a great job for your Badgers!

I hope so !!! I didn't really have a problem with Bielema. He sure is getting taken thru the ringer here since he announced his leaving. We attended a few functions in which he was present at and he always took time to talk with us about anything we wanted to. I see your from Columbus, Buckeye fan then ????

badgerfan, I'm a third-generation fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes! As is my wife. Second-generation alumni on both sides, too. Our daughter is a Buckeye fan though a graduate of an excellent university that shall remain nameless (but it's not, and could never have been, the University of Michigan  ).

Hey Badger- on the anti-constipation front I swear by prunes and prune juice. Also, when taking all the pain meds I took senna-lax ( I think that is spelled wrong) Good luck!

Badger, I agree with all, constipation and frequent urination is par for the course, eat lots of fiber. You sound like you are doing great though

Thanks everyone. Dosen't sound like i'm alone on this. I have really upped my water intake and that has seemed to help but then you got the issue of peeing alot, which i can handle compared to the other. I also have been taking a couple Fiber-Con tablets daily. I may have my wife pick up some prune juice just to try. I am down to 1 norco (5/325) every 9 hrs. for pain. I go today to get my staples removed so i can see what they say about the constipation issue.....

Good luck on getting the staples out. Feel so much better now that the stitches came out today. Good luck with it. Just don't over do it!
