South AfricaHi, I'm new to this forum, but am having a total replacement (the metal hip is being replaced by plastic) on the 14th of August ... although I've today found out that this could be postponed depending on my surgeon says about the fact that I've still been taking the contraception pill (apparently I should have stopped taking this 6 weeks prior to operation!) So we'll see.

South AfricaYou are brave indeed!@!!Don’t I feel silly? It could be ceramic ... although I did think the consultant had said plastic![]()
The reason for the replacement is twofold, hopefully it will eradicate the future possibility of ions with the metal on metal replacement that I have currently (although ions isn’t a problem right now), and secondly it’s to hopefully prevent further dislocations. 5 dislocations in 18 months is no joke I can tell you! However, the Consultant has made it crystal clear that he cannot guarantee that it will prevent future dislocations because all the scans/xrays I’ve had show that the replacement I have is of good size/position etc. So I’m going with the thought, it’s better to have tried and failed than to have not tried at all! It is quite an extreme trial granted, but I’m giving it a shot!
