Last night hubby and I went to the supermarket and as I got back in the car a strong gust of wind slammed car door off my operated leg. Apart from letting out a yelp and seeing stars, I'm ok now. But think I'm safer at home for a few days. Lol.... I'm laughing now but I had tears I my eyes last night. X

Aud

HI Audball, sorry to hear you lost the woman v car battle - but I'm so impressed that you went to the supermarket. I haven't left the house yet apart from for medical appointments, and if I'm honest, I can't see it happening soon.

Audi, you asked about what kind of exercises might be helpful...here's a link that might help broken link removed: https://www.andersonclinic.com/files/hip_replacement_book.pdf I believe the exercises start on page 13. Also I would think a moderator will be along with some links too. I am doing some exercises from PT and the simplest ones are hard but I figure I will do as well as I can and in time they come easy. Good luck with your recovery. :ok:

Thanks Sandybeach, I'll have a look. Most physiotherapist in the hospital did was get me up to walk with sticks and go down and up the stairs. Lol.

Aud

Had a look, thanks. Feel as though i've been fixed then chucked out and hope for the best. Pmsl

Aud

Ooo Aud, you rebel you going out for a drive.lol. I was too scared to in case I had an accident and my insurers wouldn't accept a claim cos of my recent surgery. Sorry to hear you bashed you operated side,it is so easy done.

I felt exactly the same as you...it's a British thing I have found, just sent on our way and left to get on with it. I won't recommend any specific exercises as I am not knowledgeable enough and don't want to suggest anything too exerting too soon but if you look in the forum library( I can't do links on my Ipad sorry) there are exercises there and if you want to have a quick whizz through my thread you will find info in exercises as I was always asking what I could do next.

Great to hear you still sounding upbeat and that things seem to be going smoothly for you.

Take care

Ann

Ann i'm going to be good for a few days..... then sneak out again. PMSL...... Carefully hee hee.

Every day feels better, barely limping and just using sticks if i go out. I finally put an avatar picture up and it's me as a baby in my dundee rings. Don't know if anyone else with congenital hip dislocation had these, my mum has them up in her loft. lol

Audball
Hi there
You asked about the exercises. Regarding the link of anderson clinic posted above, they are prop exercised of which some of them apply post op but not all. I just want to warn you that exercise number 6 on page 15 - straight leg raise- is not recommended before week 4 by my PT. So beware to do that specific one too early. Exercises from 1-5 starting on page 10, which are Ankle pumps, isometric abduction/adduction when you are lying on the bed not sitting, quadriceps the knee tighteners, gluteal isometric tightheners- the buttocks exercise, short arc quads with a towel under your knee are the ones that you can start immediately without anybody assisting or checking you but just do not overdoo it like 100 times as it says on the document. My PT made me do each one of those between 15 to 20 times depending on tolerability. On week 2, she started with the exercise lying on your nonoperated side and raising your leg sideways. But you need assistance to lie on the side and to raise your leg properly for the first time. And on week 2 we started to raise led when lying on your belly, face down. but again with the assistance of PT. I am currently at week 2+ so these are the ones I can recommend. We also do some stretching (pulling your knee to your body in abduction up to 90 degrees) with the PT pushing me which can only be done with an experienced PT only I suppose.

Did you really say 100? Pmsl.. thanks because I have no idea what is good or bad excercises for my hip and don't want to damage it.

My mum always tells me how I never cried much as a baby until one time they put my frog plaster on and a bit was digging into me. She says I yelled the place down. They had to cut a v shape out of the plaster. What a thought. Lol.

Audball,
Yes, that's what it writes on the document of anderson clinic in one of the exercises. Repeat for 100 times. Do NOT. just do between 10-20 times of each exercise depending on your tolerability. Ankle pumps or buttock exercise are easy and can be done more but abduction (sideway opening both legs when lying on the bed) is not something easy at first and it is enough to do it like 15 times each day.

Aud, perhaps you can ask about PT at your six week check up. I was told it isn't procedure for PT after THR but I persisted at my check up and managed to get a few one on ones then as long as I wanted in the hospital gym which the PT's run. I stressed that it was important due to my congenital issues.I suppose it depends on your hospital, mine was great as far as the PT dept went. It's worth a go anyway even if you just get suggestions for your personal improvement.

Thanks Annie. Last time i had PT i was 17 and they left me behind a curtain on a table, with a bean bag and told me to lie on each side and lift it 10 times each side. lol. So since then i've done aerobics and boxercise, gym and kinect and zumba... not all at once. lol. Thought i was strengthening my body, think i did more harm than good.
Also never had any hip problems giving birth, i thought that would have caused a lot more strain, but it's probably all just catching up on me now. ( hips shout surprise! HA!)
Aud

Thanks Barbara, i think i look like my youngest son in that picture. lol. Even then i think i'd just accepted my dodgy hips, i look like whatever!. Hee hee.

Okay mrs, what's all this about climbing up ladders to fix shed roof then, you are crackers Aud. Thank God it went okay but flippin heck, you are not far out from major surgery....eee what are we gonna do with you :)

I am pleased your recovery is going well just don't want something to go wrong. You should still be just pottering around the house getting cups of tea made for you and making the most of your 'not having do do much at all' time.

Take care superwoman

Ann.x.

I know Ann, and I'm chastised. Lol. I'm trying to sit with my feet up and relax and take the cups of tea, when offered. I think I'm just so used to hip pain anyway that a bit of muscle pain is a relief. Lol. But I promise to be really good. My bruises have nearly all gone, bit of a sore knee still, but it's only just over two weeks, and I'm very happy with the way it's shaping up. And I have a scarey scar to frighten the weans with. .... in fact, it's not that scarey any more. It looks not bad at all.
