Start of week 5,
Hi feel good this week, starting to walk around the block with out my crutches, only very little pain. Starting to feel like wanting to do jobs around home but have to hold back. Was tempted to get the lawn mower out but didn't. Hospital made an appointment for 15 Dec, so hope is all good and start to do things like driving again, dying to get out of the house.

Patience Mike! You are on your way and doing very well! Mowing the lawn would be pushing it, no pun intended, but no reason you can't do some things around the house.

Just be careful, no breaking the 90 degree ruls and add LITTE things gradually. Except of course specific things that you were told NOT to do!

You will know when to stop...good luck :wink1:!

Fight that urge, Mike!!! Trust me....you don't want to be doing household chores quite this early. Wait until you see your doctor on the 15th and get some guidance from him.

This is the hard part Mike. Fighting the urge to do everything. You are starting to see a bit more energy and moving better. It's natural to want to get on with life.

Trust me - easy does it! You will be able to do all the things you want to do. But you are still very much in healing mode.

Keep up those walks and building your confidence without walking aides. You are doing great!

Jaycey is right, pacing yourself really IS the hard part! Sounds like your recovery is going well, though- keep up the good work!!

Thanks guys this is a fantastic site, you are all so helpful. I have read quiet a few posts saying that one leg is now longer after the op. I think I have that same problem but reading other posts say, over the healing time this problem will write it's self. Is this true?
I am not using my crutches, but still go up and down stairs one at a time as been told. When is it safe to walk normally up and down stairs? Reading they say it's good strength building. Is it best to wait till after the six week period?

Mike, these are all good questions for your follow up appointment. I wouldn't push the stairs yet, it will just happen! As for the LLD, it may be a tad off right now, but no one even chaeck for a good few months as things have to settle for that long.

My OS wouldn't even hear of lift for my shoe until I was measured at four months.

I think you are wise to wait out the six weeks before trying anything new...you are already 3/4 way there!

Yes, Mike......if it feels like you have a leg discrepancy, you most likely don't and your pelvis will adjust itself in time.

There is no timetable for doing stairs....or anything else in recovery for that matter. It is time to do it when you feel as thought you can. Everyone is different. You must build up muscle strength first, though. That is the only limiting factor.

Hi Mike, my OS advised waiting until I was at least 3 months post op before getting measured for any length difference. In my case I do have a slight LLD - but a small lift does the trick.

The stairs are like any other activity. One day they seem impossible and then the next you catch yourself doing them normally. There is no need to wait to try as you won't break any restrictions. But don't be discouraged if you can't on the first try. Muscles are still weak.

Let us know how you get on!

Week 6
Hi well I am still on the road to recovery and doing well. Thanks for all your good advise, I am feeling really good with no pain at all. My thigh muscle tissue must be on the mend as things are getting easier to do, started extending my walks with no pain. Reading other posts, I see some of you are having some hard times and I really feel for you. All I can say if you do the right thing you reap the benefits of recovery.

Once again good progress, for the OZ girl across the ditch :)

Thanks for dropping my my thread. :)

Glad you are doing well Mike. Keep up the good work!

Yes Kiwi Mike, good progress :)

Well I am one week away from going back to the hospital to get x-rays and see my surgeon. Hoping I can start to get back to normal in some ways. How many of you have got tread mills? I have one but little weary about using it. I much prefer to go out doors for walks.

I think anytime you can get out and walk "normally" Mike, it beats a treadmill every time! I wouldn't use until you get the OK from the OS next week though. Almost there...

Just my opinion...

Hi Mike, the only thing I found the treadmill was good for was to watch your gait and walking slowly (heel, toe walking). But if you don't have a mirror it's not really that useful. Walking outdoors is great if the weather is good. But Janet is right - be sure your OS is OK with you using any new equipment.

Week 7
Hi everyone, week 7 and what a wonderful week it is. Been back to hospital for x-rays and see my surgeon. Check's me out and first thing he says "back at work yet?" Wow what good news, I can get back to normal with no restrictions. Does it not make your day and what a great Christmas gift.:yahoo: I wish you all a happy Christmas and those who are still on the road to recovery, keep up the good work. I see some of you are making some real quick recovery's in such a short time. Don't do too much and prolong your recovery.:yahoo:

Mike that's great news! I'm so glad you're going to get back to a normal routine. Keep up the recovery and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas too!

Buffi

Hey Kiwi friend

Wonderful news regarding your checkup... Cheeky these Dr's with e comment about going back to work.. I said to my OS yesterday so when should I go back to work - "oh, six weeks" - no way I said, so then we bantered back and forth until I said 9 weeks and then graduated return for 3 weeks, just working 3 full days a week... He said ok, I go along with that!!

I think they like to see us start to get the "normality" of life back as quickly as possible to stop the blues, boredom and perhaps laziness to creep in..

But we know our bodies better than they do...

My OS did say though it would take 12 weeks for the hemoglobin and electrolytes to stabilize!

Regarding the treadmill question Mike, I started as soon as I got home (10 days) very slow and just for a few mins at a time with hubby standing guard.. I have found it fantastic.. Although it is good to get out for the out of door walks, helps to make one feel part of nature and the world - take care and good progress xx

Yeah! Major milestone there Mike.

Now easy does it on going back to work. Hopefully a phased approach so you can rest when you need it.

Let us know how you get on!
