THR 2nd Hip Recovery

Chronic pin is so debilitating Julie and so hard for others to understand. I am so fortunate to have an understanding GP. I have tried everything for this thigh/femur pain and it does seem to be more inflammation type pain.

I don't know how long I can stay on the prednisone, but it is helping. Would you consider a round of that? I know they have that seven day prednisone steroid pack where you drop one pill each day. Various ortho/neuro docs have used that on me over the years. I always responded very well with it.

It just might be worth checking into. I am so torn over these steroids as I know they can be a dangerous yet in small doses are so helpful..Just a suggestion.. I feel so bad to see all that you have gone thru and are still suffereing :console:

I know you know more than anyone about pain. You've lived with it for far too long !! I've done the Prednisone before and have always had good luck with it. I know just a dose pack wouldn't harm me as that's all I've ever taken. Right about now, a dose pack isn't going to make a difference with AVN. I've had enough injections with knees, hip and prednisone dose packs in the past that whatever damage is could have caused has done it and if I get AVN in any other joint, it's going to happen no matter what at this point.

I go Thursday next week back to my OS for a review of how they injections worked - they DIDN'T - and see if we want to go and schedule BTKR for late January or early February. Hopefully the massage on Monday also will help.

Keeping the chin up Janet !! :thumb: I just want to be able to enjoy our trip on Christmas Day for 2 nights to Savannah and be able to walk around down by the river and then on way back we'll stop in St. Auguestine for a night. Both beautiful places with such history.

Yes, I was thinking more about the back issue. I know the joints are really bad from the AVN. It may reduce some swelling in the spine is what I was thinking.

Truthfully, I have no experience with AVN and don't want to end up with it myself, which is why the rheumatologist started me on Boniva i think, to strengthen the bones.

Gheese, this is such a viscious cycle, isn't it?

Well I had my monthly massage today. The IT bands finally are doing a lot better on both sides. I told him how my low back has been hurting a ton this weekend and still the piriformis muscle as well. It also has been now getting very tender on the side of the hip and going into the back. He worked that area out well and stretched it as well. I see my OS on Thursday about the knees and will talk to him more about this hip/back/butt tenderness and soreness. It was bothering me a lot this weekend. Any other ideas of what it may be??

Julie, I spent half the night reading your thread, and I'm in awe of what you have been through and how you have coped with it all. You are one special, strong and brave lady. I haven't got anything to add really, except to say that you are in my thoughts and I send you warm hugs. Fingers crossed that you wil get some answers on Thursday.

Jane

Julie, just my two cents worth, but do you think you could benefit from an MRI? You may want to ask when you see the doctor. Just reaching here as I feel so bad for you, and helpless...

Thanks so much Jane and Janet !! You know Jane, I look back at my year and I look at others (Janet) and think mine has really been nothing in comparison, but then I think hmmmm maybe something is up here.

Janet, I feel that the hip is just fine - well let me say implant - I think there is something else going on and with my side of the hip being VERY tender and low back and butt area it has to be something. I will stress to him Thursday that this needs to now be addressed before we even consider the knees. I'm having more chronic daily pain from the hip/back than the knees. Don't get me wrong, the knees hurt, but this is far worse.

Like you had said earlier Janet, maybe a predinsone dose pack to see if that has any effect and maybe I need an injection of some sort in the hip area.

Thanks for you input, it's very much appreciated and thanks Jane for taking the time to read everything.

Everything is connected to everything else as Jo always says, so perhaps something is moved out of line back there. I think your hips are fine too, and that this is connected more to a back problem, in my non-medical opinion .

I say that because I have suffered for years with my back problems and when I was first told I needed a THR, I wasn't having any hip problems. The pain was in my SI joint! That was why I couldn't go thru with it then.

After all the x-rays etc. that we've gone thru, why not one more MRI to get a definative picture of what's up? I am actually now starting to have sciatic nerve problems on top of the femur pain and they begin in totally different areas if you think about it.

They are both radiating into the same proximty though. Just bad luck or is there a connection to my on going pain? Who knows?

I so agree Janet, also what's one more MRI. I've only had 5-6 different MRI's this year. :loll:I'm sure my insurance company loves me. I too feel it's all related. My issue began last December with the herniated disc at L4-5 and S1 I think and then they said no it's your hips which I know it was since it turned out to be AVN, but now with the not walking correctly (I did buy new shoes yesterday and put my lift in that shoe since I will be wearing it daily for work). I know that since I haven't been wearing my shoe with the lift it I feel it all the time. When I wear it with it, I feel level and walk better. It's just so hard to find shoes to accomadate it with. So with that all said, my low back aches and had knots in it. My rear is in pain and the side of my hip is very tender to the touch. Bursitis?? Back issue?? Combination?? Which one may it be?? It hurts when I bend to my left side (the side that has the pain of course), getting into and out of a car and to touch it.

Will find out something Thursday and now the year is almost over so getting in somewhere won't be easy. Would like to get whatever I need to do done with since I owe nothing.

:console:Gosh I so undrstand. I ruptured a disk bending over to shave my leg in the shower when I was 32 and in the best shape of my life! I have no stomach muscle, and having had three kids, of course that has weaked it more.

I also keep getting ventral hernias, which means the stomach muscle keeps splitting. I have had it repaired three times already, the last with mesh. It is a painful surgery to go thru. Now I have an umbilical hernia which showed up this summer on my CT scans.

All of this weak muscle stuff is putting so much presure on my back/hips, etc. and there is nothing I can do about it. But I do sympathize with you as I know it is all connected. My last pregnancy at 26 was spent pretty much in bed for 9 months...

That would be hard to be in bed for most of a pregnancy !! You have sure been dealt a ton Janet...

Will keep you informed on Thursday and I sure hope you have heard something on your end since I know you were waiting to hear more.

Haven't heard a thing yet. Don't have it in me at the moment to go looking for more trouble either . This past week has been very painful so I guess I'm trying to ignore it...

The good news is, this is NOT going to kill me so I count my blessings! It could always be worse!

Hello there....

Jane is right I've read both yours and Janet's threads and I'm amazed how much you have both gone through and how brave!

Thank you for sharing your lives....lots of xxooxx

Thanks Sarah, it's been a tough year for myself and even tougher one for Janet.

Tomorrow's appointment can come soon enough and SOMETHING needs to be figured out. I can't keep feeling like this and hurting all day long. I woke last night a few times with my left leg completely "dead". I had to keep turning my foot for it it start to wake up.

This morning at work one of the men had asked how I was feeling. He said he noticed me grimmacing in our meeting and I looked at him and started crying. I told him I'm so tired of hurting all the time. My knees were hurting as well all night long but right now that's the least of my concerns. Need to resolve the back/butt/hip issue and find out what the cause it.......

That sure sounds like a back problem with your leg going "dead". That MRI can't be done soon enough! Hang in there sweetie :console:. I know this is fixable. Just have to get a proper diagnosis.

FYI...my recommendation would be a neurosurgeon, not an ortho. Just me. I had better luck and where it was my spine, I wanted a neuro.

I think you are right on that, I almost just want to call the one I had last year and just schedule with him and then see what Ortho says tomorrow, but I think it's back more than anything else too.

I hate that should I do this or should I do that in mean time........I think I should just get on phone and make appointment, I can always cancel after tomorrow if OS thinks it's hip related. UGH..... I know you know what I'm talking about with pain. I just am grumpy....

Yup, I sure do! I would schedule and keep both. You will probably have to wait for the Neuro anyway. Hey, if it's not an insurance issue, go for it! You can't continue to suffer the way you have been. The ortho can probably prescribe something for you in the meantime.

Make the call Julie..., I would.

Thanks Janet, you knocked some sense into me. I see the Neuro on Monday morning and my OS tomorrow at 8:00. This way I have every part of that area of the body covered. :loll: Thankfully I don't need referrals and can just make my appointments and go on in. I need some relief soon before I bite everyone's heads off. Thank goodness my boyfriend is working in Boston area this week so he doesn't have to deal with me.

Oh you poor thing! yes, we sure snap at the ones closest to us, don't we? Can't help it though. Poor Bill, sometimes he just looks at me like a deer in the head lights! Then of course it brings me back to reality...

Between me, him and the cat, we all have a serious problem right now. We do laugh about it though because we figure nobody else would put up with us! Gotta lighten up...life is too short.

So glad you got a quick appointment :thumb:.

Julie

Hope your consultant appointment tomorrow brings results and helps in figuring out the causes of the other (back) problem.

You sure have a lot to cope with right now.

I think when you are in a constant pain it makes us feel down and sometimes bad tempered.

Family and friends want to help but feel powerless and dont really understand what its like.

The members here are supporting you all the way - and please feel free to have a good rant if it helps!:wink1:

All the best

Dave
