TKR 2active getting her life back!

It does Karri, but in the back of my mind, I still worry that it's related since there isn't a definitive reason at this point for the rash. It's now on my other calf and ankle area. Not a lot, but it's there. ?????? Still no pain, no redness, no additional swelling. Just this rash that comes and goes. So strange.

Is anything going around the school? If it's on the other leg I don't think it's a metal allergy.

Make an appointment with a dermatologist. Also, take photographs (cell phone) of any rashes and skin issues so you have something to share with the doctor when you have your appointment (and it has totally disappeared :chinstroke: by the time you get in to the office)

There's nothing currently going around in my preschool. I wasn't sure if a metal allergy would be localized or not, with it possibly being in my bloodstream. I have been taking pictures for the past two days just in case my OS wanted to see it and I wasn't breaking out at the time. If it doesn't go away completely in the next couple of days, I will be seeing my OS, and then possibly a dermatologist if he has no answer for me. Tomorrow I will be purchasing fragrance free laundry detergent, discontinue using fabric softener, and use fragrance free body soap. I've never had a reaction to any of these things in the past, however, I need to start the process of elimination so I can hopefully figure this out. It's driving me nutso!

It would me, too! I hope you can find out what's causing the problem.

I got a shower this morning with ivory soap, and I'm washing all of our linens, towels, and my clothes in free and clear All laundry detergent. I'm not using any lotions on my body as of today, including my dry legs...I'm doing all this, but I still cannot shake the thought of my rash being related to my implant. I have never had a rash that I couldn't explain, and with this happening 6 weeks after my KR, it makes me suspicious even though my OS said it was highly unlikely due to the type of implant I have. We will see....Today is day 1 of the process of elimination.

Has anyone experienced a clicking or popping in your knee as you walk during your recovery?

I have a new sensation in my new knee right below my knee cap on the outer part while I walk. It doesn't hurt, it just feels weird. I'm moving around really well, but still have to hold on to the railing when going up and especially down stairs.

Anyone have a favorite exercise that's good for leg strengthening? My ROM is 125 and my extension is 0, so I'm flexible but not so strong yet.

My rash is still present, and I still have no idea what is causing it. I guess I'll have to wait it out for a few days. My scar looks good except for the very top where it unfortunately came apart a bit during my early stretching exercises. It never bled, but it opened enough to where I have scar tissue on the outside. That's where I was applying the Mederma before I started to develop this rash. I'm no longer using it until I figure out what's causing the rash.

My 76 year old father had bilateral about 5 years ago, and you can barely see his scars at all. AMAZING!! I didn't get that lucky. I have a feeling this part of my scar will show regardless of what I do to try and conceal it but at least I'm pain free, and that's more important to me for sure.

Oh, and by the way.... our first grandbaby will be a BOY!:) We will find out in two weeks what our second grandbaby will be.:)

Many TKRs notice a popping or clunking or clicking sound when walking. Sometimes it goes away, sometimes it doesn't, but nothing to worry about. Celle has one noisy knee and one quiet knee!

You know, @2active , it really isn't necessary to put anything on your scar, especially at this early stage in your recovery. None of those creams makes much difference anyway, in spite of their claims, and if you start applying them before your wound has closed completely you run the risk of introducing infection.
Massage post THR

Left to itself, your wound will heal well. All the lumps and bumps will gradually flatten out and the scar colour will gradually fade until you have a thin white, or pale pink, line. Nature had been healing wounds for a long time now and your body knows what it's doing.

It's still too early to be doing any strengthening exercises. These need to wait until at least 3 months after your surgery.
I really think you are expecting too much, too soon of this recovery, which does take a full year.

Okay. It's good to know that the clicking is normal. Thanks! I guess I'll just let walking alone at this point strengthen my leg until it's time to use weights. I haven't used them yet. My wound was completely healed and scars all gone before I applied anything, but now I'm not using anything at all due to this rash I'm dealing with. I admit, I'm a bit anxious to get full use of my leg back, and I need to relax and not think about it so much. If it weren't for this mysterious rash, I would be just fine.. Still no clue????

You're not quite 2 months into a long recovery that can take up to a year. My OS said I shouldn't even consider going back to work until 3 months, so you are expecting a lot at this point. Also strength training shouldn't begin until 3 months, but my PTs waited until 4 months.

You really get it on board that you're at this moment in time, your leg is NOT weak, it is INJURED! So treat it as such. This means no exercises for strengthening and no weights until about September at the earliest.

See what inappropriate exercising can do?

I'd bet my frilly nurse's hat that it was caused by the cream you used. No doubt about it.

If your scars are "all gone" then why are you coveting your father's scars? And you said it yourself - his scars are 5 years old, yours are only 2 months! Wait till your scars are 5 years before you rant about your 'bad luck'! I'll bet that in 2022 your scars will be super duper too!

Most of us use nothing on our incision scars and they fade away all by themselves. It just takes a while.
Your muscle strength will come back as your knee heals. Your knee is a mere toddler right now.

Okay. Thanks so much! I guess I just worry too much, and need to start relaxing more.:)

Complete recovery from a knee replacement takes as long as a full year.
There is absolutely nothing you can do to speed that up. It takes as long as it takes.

Your knee has its own agenda and most of the time that isn't the agenda you would like. You think you should be able to do things, but your knee says "Not yet. I'm not ready for that yet."
Where are you in recovery?? (TKR)

I know how frustrating that can be, but do try to remember you aren't yet a sixth of the way towards full recovery. Give your knee time to heal and I'm sure it will make an excellent recovery.

In one of my previous posts, I meant to say, all of my "scabs" were gone before I applied lotion or scar cream, not "scars". I know scars are forever. My OS confirmed that my rash is not related to my surgery or metal, nor is it from the scar gel I used, because it wouldn't have affected my other leg. He told me to make an appointment with my family doctor or a dermatologist, but I'm going to hold off because now the rash is slowly disappearing. I guess I may never know what caused it. I'm just glad it's going away.:) If it starts to flare up again, I will be seeing a dermatologist for sure. I have two grandparents from my preschool who are scheduled for TKR, and I have directed them to this forum for guidance and support. I'm very thankful that I found it when I did ( pre-surgery), because it has been a great help to me. Thanks for all of your advise and support.:)

I'm so glad that your rash is disappearing! You might not ever know what caused it. But, at least it's getting better. I agree with you about this forum. I joined 6 months before my surgery and found it a great comfort. That's why I'm still on here, trying to help others.
