TKR 2 years on and in more pain than before I had the surgery<

Great to hear you got some solid sleep!

has anyone else experienced a sharp stinging feeling in the shin below TKR, like someones sticking pins into it, happens 6-8 times in a row 2 to 4 times a day at the moment. 12 weeks post op now.

Yes, last year for months after my LTKR until they faded away. I assume all those weird little pains are just part of the healing process.

Also, color me confused, but your signature states "Left TKR JULY 20, 2015", however in several posts you say it was your RIGHT knee that was replaced. Did you have both??

@hawk2go thanks for that, I have seen the video during one of those long sleepless nights browsing the net but haven't tried it but I will now after hearing from you. Great stuff, thanks very much xxx

@joey5898 It seems to ease the night pain and also help with the morning stiffness. I still wrap it sometimes when I know I've overdone it since I try not to up the pain meds at this point.

@Clipless . Hi, thanks for your comments, everyday brings a different experience doesn't it!! And, yes, it is my right knee and had the op 18th July this year, not sure why 'signature is wrong and don't know how to correct it! Shades of confusion too! !!!

I'm 16 weeks post op and still not back at work! The stiffness and swelling in my knee and still no proper sleep ( 4 months sleep deprivation is sending me insane!) is the reason I don't feel able to do my job. I have employed the help of a chiropractor who has examined my knee and found it to be good, no problem with the joint itself but he's found severe damage to the muscles in my leg, partly due to damage caused during the years before the op itself. On his advice I've joined a nearby leisure spa which has a lovely pool and gym as he told me aqua exercises would help me mend. Can anyone suggest some good exercises I can do in the pool?

I merged your recovery threads, as per forum protocol---TKR recovery folks are allowed one recovery thread---it makes it so much easier to see where you are, where you have been, what issues or concerns you have had, and those nice little victories when we do not have to jump from thread to thread---and it eliminates double postings of answers.

@joey5898 i just read through your thread. My TKR was just a few days before yours and I've had trouble sleeping at night too. I just started a new job and I finally just collapsed last night and slept for 6 solid hours after three full days of work. I still take tramadol at night because of achiness in my knee. Sine I'm on my feet now the swelling is worse than it has ever been. I found that I'm much more comfortable sleeping in my recliner than in my bed where I would just toss and turn. Have you tried sleeping anywhere else? Is there one place that you have where you nap well? You might want to try sleeping there to see if it helps. I hope you get your full night of sleep soon.

@newlybionic
Hi, I can relate to everything you say, I've been just the same, nowhere seems to be a comfortable place to sleep! I'm now taking one 500 mg Naproxen at bedtime and this seems to help, falling asleep for about 3 hours before I wake and the 'tossing and turning' starts for the rest of the night still! But since I've been in the pool everyday for the last week I do believe my knee feels a little less achy and I'm not constantly aware of it all through the day either. Plan to get back to work beginning of December but it will be on reduced hours for a few weeks. My shift pattern this year is working all over Christmas and new year so need to get back, if not, it would mean one of my colleagues would have to work my Christmas so would feel realy guilty if that happened (wouldn't be very popular with the team either! !). Good luck on your recovery? Hope you get that wonderful 7-8 hours solid sleep soon. Xx

I can certainly commiserate! After the recliner, I sought some normalcy and went to my bed. I would sleep for about an hor or so and then wake up---I could not get comfortable.

I was like Diogenes ---but instead of looking for one honest man, I was looking for one good night's sleep! I went to the guest bedroom, the couch in the living room, the futon in the computer room, and finally, I would toss the futon mattress down on the floor and crash there. This went on for a while---I actually found this site on one of my late-night internet forays---until my OS prescribed some Ambien---I took it for ten nights, it re-established my sleep pattern, and I have not looked back.

@referee54
Hi, I know just what you mean, I too have wandered the nights in search of that elusive place where sleep comes and lasts for 7 hours!! Will I ever find it?? My doctor gave me 2 weeks sleeping pills which worked a little giving me about 4 hours of sleep but as soon as I stopped them I was back to square one, doc won't give me anymore. But, hey ho, could be worse, each day gets a little better generally, I'll get there eventually. Just don't mention having the other knee replaced! No way José! !!!! Xx

Tylenol PM is helping me sleep. Sleep is magic medicine. So happy it is the weekend and I can sleep late tomorrow and Sunday!

Hi. It's been many many months since I posted as I felt a bit of a moaning minnie and was getting more and more negative. I thought I would try and move on in the hope that things would eventually get better.

Well here we are, 2 years down the line and I'm in more pain now than before the OP. My back also hurts so badly that I usually find myself in tears as I crawl into bed at the end of each day. I've been back to doctors and have been referred to specialists and had xrays/scans/examinations all showing nothing significant (thank goodness in one way), just wear and tear in the back and a little scar tissue in the knee.

I was told we just have to manage the pain with pain killers and "give it time"!!! I'm like a zombie half the time due to too much painkiller I guess. I'm actually still icing every night, trying to keep active, swim as often as I can and still, just about, holding down a job.

Is anyone else in this situation and are you just resigned to life in pain. Joey xx
