TKR 2 years on and in more pain than before I had the surgery<

At 9 months I take 1 Tramadol and one Ambian at night. Went back to work 1/2 time at 7 weeks and full time around 12.

@AThom10731 Hi. crikey! 9 months and you still need strong pain relief? That makes me feel a lot better, felt I was not supposed to get any pain by this stage, 12 weeks now and shouldn't be needing pain killers but i do especially at night. If you don't take anything at night do you find you don't sleep well or have you not tried? I admire you getting back to work quickly, what sort of work do you do? I still feel I'm not up to going back yet, I'm station duty officer at a major city police station, it's full on, and often have to move quickly, you can imagine! But work are being very good and when I'm ready I can go back few hours a day on light duties.

Still have discomfort from hip bursitis and knee pain and when the insomnia came to town it refused to move out. Benedryl, Advil PM and Tylenol PM did the job prior to surgery but they do not help anymore. My hip pain is better. Eventually I will get off the meds.

@AThom you sound like you've been through the mill, hope the pesky pain and insomnia move out soon. Good luck :SUNsmile:

I am still laughing at the feces!!! Never ask a nurse for help if you are not prepared for the worst!!
I do think that I Personally was further along at 3 months, but if you are not, then that is that. If you feel that you are not where you want to be at 16 weeks, it is time for a second opinion. There are many reasons for a knee to remain painful after a tkr.

Those questions are best answered by someone who is used to dealing with Tkr's that have not settled down to be nice, new knees. Usually if the doctor lists that he does revisions in his bio, that might be a person you would want to see.

I struggled with sleep for quite a while. I mixed my heavy pain meds with tramadol and Tylenol for a while before I dropped the heavies. Prior to my revision I was fine with aspirin and occasional Tylenol. Now that I had my revision I am once again spacing my Percocet with tramadol. Plan to transition off heavies when my knee is ready. I did not have sleep
Issues this time. But constipation did occurred. Stool softener and prunes work best for me.

@skigirl Hi, I'm still feeling nauseous after the poo pic!!! Thanks for your comments but pain is not realy the issue, that awful full on agony of the early weeks has gone, now it's just uncomfortable and aches and is what wakes me many times in the night every time I move. I think my main problem is sleep deprivation, it's sending me insane! I also have the tight band feeling and set concrete feeling all around the knee when I get up in the morning but I believe this is quite common, I can deal with it. Just waiting for my doctor to telephone to discuss what to take to get me some sleep (but no opiates!!) Xx

Doctor has given me 14 zopiclone 7.5 mg tablets to try, will take one tonight and hope Mr Sandman comes!!! Then blood tests and sample tomorrow just to make sure the diarrhoea and grotty feelings I've had all week are actually just the withdrawal symptoms from going cold turkey with the opiates :scratch:

@kneeper Hi, you're right, with the 'concrete' knee and tight band feeling brings that achey stiff knee feeling which does respond well to strong pain meds for me but now I've decided to stop taking the opiates the ibrufen and paracetamol dont have much effect sadly but it's not too bad apart from the nights.

Bad decision, Joey. You're only 12 weeks out and it's not at all uncommon to still need strong pain meds. I took mine for 4 months straight. As long as you are expereincing that pain - yes PAIN - you need something more than paracetamol. And btw, ibuprofen does nothing. Despite all the tv ads, it is not a pain killer.

@Josephine
Hi Josephine, Ive not been hasty in my decision to stop the opiates, Ive been feeling increasingly unwell for few weeks now with constant dull headaches and generally groggy, I now believe it was too much for me to be taking those meds for 3 months, for others Im sure they are the right thing and much needed help but not for me, one week without and I feel so much better, (now the withdrawal symptoms have passed that is!!) headaches gone and 'pain' is not that bad. Also, I feel the main thing that has been making my recovery slower than some has been this sleep deprivation thing, 3 months without a full nights sleep is not good for the mind or body. I took my first Zopiclone last night and my God, I slept for 6 and a half hours! woke this morning and could have wept with relief. Had my group PT session this afternoon and my PT said "you've done well today, your body has healed more in those hours of quality sleep than the last two weeks". Just hope last night wasn't a one off, fingers crossed. xx

Well it's up to you. I do hope the 40 minutes it took me to answer your post hasn't been for nothing, hasn't fallen on deaf ears. I wasn't criticising your choice of medication or mode of taking it. I am more concerned that you stop doing all those exercises as they are certainly responsible for the pain you have. Stop them and you could probably manage with just Tylenol.

@Josephine sorry for taking up your time. Also i no longer do that many exercises, just the minimum essentials, have never been fanatical about them. I attend group PT sessions once every two weeks???
