Well....by nighttime..OUCH! My whole left side felt like it got beat up!

Well, sweetie, this means you're doing too much. You need to back off a bit. Be sure and tell the PT how if felt that night. They are not mind readers and need feedback from you to adjust what they are having you do.
Take care and keep us posted. We care. [Bonesmart.org] 2 weeks post op

Hi Everyone!
I had a great day yesterday! Friends came over early with bagels before PT so I got up early, showered, dried my hair and straightened up a little before they came. My mornings are always iffy because I tend to get nauseous but I did great! My PT went especially well..they told me I am doing so much better than the first week! I walked the treadmill for 8 minutes along with stepping over a pole 12 inches off the ground..bad leg first and then back again..and sideways as well which I'm not as good at doing..rubber band exercises, bike for 5 minutes, balancing on bad leg for 10 seconds..15 times..and I felt good when I left. My son's birthday is today so he and a friend came to stay the night..we went out to dinner..my first outing to a restaurant..came home and watched some silly movie that made us belly laugh! I don't remember feeling any pain at all all day! What a great feeling! Today was cold and damp and I felt it but still took the dog for a walk around the block and did the stairs in my house 4 times...about 20 stairs to the laundry room..but felt a little stiffer today. Everyday there's a little accomplishment..hope everyone has a day or a week like mine! Its encouraging!!:happydance:

Fantastic update.. Isn't it great when we pass these milestones and feel the improvements each day.. Don't forget to rest, elevate, ice in between, still lots of healing happening.. Well done, looking forward to your next post :(

Hi there. Apart from what other people have said about the dangers of returning to work too early, I was told at the hospital that it wasn't safe to fly before three months. Perhaps when you do feel able to return to work your employer could put you on a phased return so that you do light air-side duties first?

Hi Firebrand!
Unfortunately I live pretty far to do light duty for my airline. What happens with light duty is you have to go in 5 days for 8 hours and you only get paid 93 hours for the month! (93 hours is what flight attendants get paid on average for a month)So you see you are working many more hours than you are getting paid when you do office work! My Dr. was overly optimistic about everything in my case..he didn't prescribe strong enough pain medicine in the hospital (thank God for the wonderful nurse who saved me from the torture), and he said I could be back as early as 4 weeks!!!HAHA! There is no way!! I am doing great in PT but I am no way near going back to pushing that 800 lb cart or bumping my hips on the armrests! I am sure he will extend my leave when I see him next week. I am receiving NJ disability which is paying my bills so I'm ok..I just miss my friends at work and things get a little boring around the house.I am hoping to get back sometime in April...but I will not go back until I know I am physically able. There are so many germs on the plane..I won't risk getting sick and having an infection spoil my otherwise great recovery!

Hi everyone!
I hit my 4 week mark tomorrow. My PT added some extra exercises to my routine..lifting my leg over a stick about a foot high..maybe more...and also crossing my legs so I can put on my socks and shoes. He was trying to show me that fear of injury is holding me back from doing some things. I admit he is right..I do tend to be overly cautious when trying new things involving my left side. However..Saturday morning when I got out of bed I almost fell. My left leg was so weak and for the first time it was painful to walk without my cane. I am beginning to think my PT thinks I am doing better than I am because I take my pain meds before going there and so I don't really feel bad until hours after. My whole left side of my leg hurts and I've had to use the cane all weekend. I feel like I'm going backwards. I went out to lunch with a friend yesterday and today I went for a few hours to a St. Patty's Day parade..I didn't want to stay home all weekend and be disappointed in my setback. At 4 weeks I thought I really should be off the pain meds and soreness I could accept from working my muscles but this is out and out pain and its got me baffled. I'm icing and elevating and today I took more meds than I have been taking. Am I wrong to take the meds before PT..should I be letting them see me without pain medicine so they know what I can really do? I've been so optimistic and this has upset me.

acbelmar, I think you should make sure your pain meds are at their peak so you can do your PT. I just had an in home session and that is what they told me about the exercises that I'm to do daily. Maybe PT is a bit too aggressive. I've seen in many posts on this site where over zealous therapists have caused more harm. My OS has the same opinion that the advisors have in that hipsreally don't need too much extra therapy to heal. I will do my exercises, but I won't fret if I don't adhere to a strict daily schedule. It almost sounds like you did too much too soon. Please take it easy.

A lot of PT for hips is only necessary for those who have serious gait or limp problems. And even then it should not be painful or leave you exhausted.

Since I never allowed myself to limp during the years I was in pain (didn't know it was my hip all those years), I had in home PT 2 days a week for 6 weeks after coming home for surgery. Never did the exercises except when the PT came to the house. I just lived my life and did the things I had to do and that gave my hip all the exercise it ever needed.

I was reasonably cautious about doing new things, but after a while I just forgot about my hip for the most part. So it's quite true that PT is NOT a necessity. [Bonesmart.org] 2 weeks post op

Thanks for the words of encouragement!! I went for my first Dr appt today since my surgery. He is very pleased..in fact..the hospital wants to do a story on anterior hip replacement and he wants me to be the subject!!! He said because I am young (I don't hear that too often!!!LOL) and I have a physically demanding job, he thought I would be a good candidate. I agreed to it..this has been such a learning experience and I will mention this website because you all have helped me a great deal! He actually let me decide about work and my supervisor encouraged me to be cautious about coming back too early because of the physical labor of my job..so I told him May 1st but will see him beforehand. I want to be confident while walking and bending and turning and I'm not there yet..plus the mornings are still a little shakey!! I did ask him about the discomfort in my left side from my hip to my cheek when standing a while..he said my back is very arthritic (they couldn't get a needle in it to give me an epidural) so that might be adding to the discomfort! All in all he's pleased and I've been good since that bad spell this last weekend..went to Costco and Petsmart yesterday and had no problems!!What a change in 2 weeks!!!Hope everyone else is coming along...getting ready for another storm!!! WHERE"S SPRING!!???

acbelmar, where do you live? We're supposed to get snow tomorrow night, too, ugh. How exciting that you're having a story done about you! That should give you an idea about how well you're doing. I'm glad you're able to put off going back till May.

Barbara..I live at the NJ shore!!It sounds like we are getting another Nor'Easter!!!I'm ready for summer!!

Tomorrow will be 5 weeks. The Dr. told me to walk, walk, walk so that is what I am doing. I have noticed I need to take more pain meds than I have in the past 2 weeks which I attribute to the fact I am more active. Is this normal or should I be only taking over the counter meds by now? The only thing that seems to help is taking 5mg of oxycodone..I was taking 2 a day but I am up to 3. I don't know if the Dr. will give me a refill so if you can advise me on what OTC meds help you please let me know. Also, is anyone else experiencing cramping on the operated side..mostly down the leg and/or in the foot? Its driving me crazy when I am trying to relax...

hi acbelmar
i had this as well . thigh used to ache, hurt for no reason , just start suddenly ,spasms ,cramp pains . whole hip area used to throb as well.
yesterdays walk for me , suffering today .still taking paracetamol.4 to 6 a day .
i still have to rest my leg ,after work . 40 mins it feels like new again .

it will pass for you soon .
few weeks back before i found this forum , i worried about it , did not know anyone who had gone through this.
i did not want to keep troubling the doctors about it either. after finding this site few days back i feel much happier about the whole issue ..
5 weeks ago i got rid of those sticks etc, i did feel like i needed them but was not going to give in with it.
shoulders hurt from them also .walking without i had pain for couple of weeks too.
10th week now and hardly no pain ..only if overdo .
now i only find it hard on slopes when i have been walking about for a hour or so ...
hey good luck ...r

Hi acbelmar, Wednesday is 4 weeks for me, and I go back to work today. I increased activity over the weekend, and my leg and hip socket are achy today. I still have some bursitis-- swelling over the side of the hip. I couldn't deal with codeine, so I stopped the Percocet early on and am just taking acetaminophen. If you can take NSAIDs, try 400 mg ibuprofen and 500 mg acetaminophen together-- that worked well for me before the surgery, and I plan to go back to it when I stop the blood thinners. (5 more days!!!! Yay!!!!)

I started a new thread hoping someone would answer this quickly! After PT yesterday and a normal grocery shopping trip, I came home and watched tv for a while. When I went to get up to get a drink, I experienced the most awful pain on my operated side on the outside of my leg between my hip and my knee and it is still there! I can't put weight down on my leg and its scaring me. I haven't had pain like this since the day after my surgery and I can't imagine what it could be..I have been having cramps in my leg the past 4 days but this is something worse and its in one spot and doesn't move. I tried icing and massaging it but nothing helps. There is no pain when I am lying down. Any ideas? Doesn this call for a trip to my OS?

I'd call the OS, if it were me. Mine always says to call if I have any questions at all.

You might do better to post this on your regular thread and just tag Josephine. Then she'd be able to scroll back through your thread for all your information.

acbelmar, it sounds like a muscle cramp, but is it swollen and red? It could potentially be a blood clot. I think you should call your doctor's office as soon as they open today. They'll either reassure you or tell you to come in.
