Re: Z Postop thread

Z, you must be absolutely thrilled with your progress, love the vid... Well done :)

Re: Z Postop thread

Sandy,

I am thrilled and consider myself very fortunate. As I've said, I realize that there are plenty of milestones that I need to get thru, and will stay on the program and do what I can to help the healing. As a first timer I've been unclear as to what to expect, like all of us.

When doing my exercises I just think how nice it will be for this snow and ice to be gone and to be kicking a soccer ball with friends. A hike in the mountains on a cool sunny day sounds pretty great too... :yes 4:

I know competitive soccer is over, I've know that for awhile, but I wonder if anyone on this list is aware of anyone going back to "kicking around". The motion does put some unique strains on the hip joint, but my surgeon is fine with it (as long as I remove the high speed collisions which are unavoidable in even the friendliest of matches)

That was actually the backcountry in Yellowstone...my son worked there cleaning cabins in the summer of 2010 and I visited him for a week and hiked every day. My hip hated me but it was worth it.

This summer I went out to Moab Utah and will definitely spend more time there in the future...absolutely gorgeous. BUT...there were things I wanted to do and places I wanted to climb that my hip was not willing to go along with. I'm looking forward to a more reliable hip that gives me the confidence to HOP when the trail calls for a HOP...

Thanks for asking.

Oh good! You'll be up for it in no time at the rate you are going! Lovely background. Alex always has nice ones as well...

I imagine that I am not alone on this...

In the AM after moving precious little during the nite, I wake up feeling like a bag of toenails with all the good ones taken out....

My latest trick is to promptly get on the staionary bike and get the blood flowing, and after doing it the last 2 days will claim that it is a nice jumpstart. I've never been a huge fan of early morning exercise...I usually like to be warm and loose ...but the bike is gentle enough to do the trick.

Any other thots on getting the joints moving to start your day?

And while I am at it.... What are people's experience with ROWING machines? I think they are a great workout ( i loved mine b4 my hip made me stop) but my OS asked me to stay off it until we meet...

Thoughts?

Z

Morning John,

The mornings are a little tough! Fortunately my boy Miles has to go out for a pee and because we live in a mid rise its enough of a walk to loosen me up, the first few weeks I would dread the first walk, now it's good and your right doing a mild exercise to loosen up is a good thing........ if not ewwwwwww!

I wanted to add my hip doesn't hurt in the mornings just stiff, it's better than before the surgery I would be a mess, hunched over and in such awful pain.

You will doing your rowing machine in no time, once your OS gives the thumbs up!

Happy Friday!

Z-Joints are lubricated by fluids and if you stay very well hydrated it should help the stiffness. I like to measure my water intake with this easy formula..body weight divided by 2 equals how many ounces of water a day.

Also if you are drinking any gatorades, etc you also need to drink an equal amount of water. So if you drink 20 ounces of gatorade, then you also need to drink 20 ounces of water on top of your daily water intake.

Haldox,

Thanks that's a good point, new for me too! I'm not the greatest at water intake, last year worked with this lady who helped me loose 35lbs before my surgery, very healthy eating style, water was the primary focus though and it's interesting to read how water-hydration can pretty much effect us in so many ways. I like your suggestion with the body weight it customizes even more.

Many Thanks!

Someone tag Alex on the rowing machine question, she'll know the answer!!

Still not sure how tag:scratch:..........................off to drink a gallon of water!:hysterical:

I'm here.... can I help? To tag just type @, then the members user name and then a semi-colon ; . Once you submit the post the semi-colon turns into a colon and the user is tagged. @alexthecat:

Just my input base on previous PT - I was told to avoid the rowing machine as I have bad back. Apparently it is the worst machine I could use. But that's just my situation.

John, I am sure you can get back to the rower after your followup visit.

Hi, my physio, and the personal trauner at the gym, both said the riwing machine was a no-no for hippies. I didn't get around to asking why.

Z, re hiking, those canyons in Utah and Arizona are beautiful! my hubby has just suggested I hike the Grand Canyon next year to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Is he mad? We were there a few years ago- on 9/11/01 actually - and I formed this ambition to hike down to the bottom. But a year or so after 2 THR's? At present I can't walk more than 2 hrs, and that's after the first one only.

The rowing machine is very hard on the hips and lower back. I wouldn't recommend using it until (or unless) you get the go-ahead from your OS or other medical professional who is familiar with your case.

Jane, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to hike the Grand Canyon once you are fully recovered. I've done lots of hiking, starting about three months after my THR. I have hiked Yellowstone, Yosemite, southern Utah... all over the western US really. I am very confident that you will be able to handle that hike.

Z

For just twelve days out that is pretty amazing.

Brilliant!

Rowing and rowing machines are great for fitness etc. but only if done correctly!!

Basically it's a weight machine using mostly legs ... then back ... then shoulders ... then arms.

I would check whether the leg to body angle isn't to acute for your stage of recovery it's very easy to get way over 90 degrees.

Check on You Tube for correct technique.

All the best

Charlie

Charlie,

I hope posting here is distraction for you and not a chore....You've had a heck of a start to 2012.

I agree with all your points. I had purchased a Concept 2 rowing machine a couple years ago when running and soccer had to stop hip-wise. It was accurately described as a great non-impact workout (i mean GREAT) and I had never minded rowing machines when I've used them fairly casually at health clubs. I though this was my answer.

Unfortunatley, impingements in my hip made it a problem. I muddled thru for a few months desperate for SOME exercise and even tried modifying my form to "crunch" less...but i had to abandon it.

SO...some months from now, I do look forward to enjoying my "new" rowing machine like I'd hoped to when i bought it years ago.

You take care of yourself Charlie!

Cardie had asked a long time ago about alignment of my prosthesis. This article (that I just found) deals with the method developed by my surgeon: broken link removed: https://www.orthosupersite.com/view.aspx?rid=91076
broken link removed: https://www.orthosupersite.com/view.aspx?rid=91076

and what I like about it is that it is beign presented by another local hospital.

The "patient-specific 3-D plan" that they mention is the part of the process that insurance does not cover...and that costs $2200 out of pocket. They use 3D modeling to optimize the alignment and angles.

I'm sure that this is overkill for a lot of replacements...but if it improved my chances of a successful outcome by a few %, I'm ok with that.

Good morning - Sunday here in OZ

Knowing you are in IT (I work as a Certified Information Systems Auditor, as well as having a clinic as a Naturopath) ... Putting my IT hat on here.. Thought you might be interested in some information I posted on my own thread. - Girl from OZ about an amazing 3D application I use a lot.. you might be interested in taking a look at my post about it..

I have tagged Jo, as I didn't know how to get it out to the general BS family.. I think it would be useful for a lot of people having different muscle aches etc.... @Z15:

Cheers
Sandy
